I came to understand from reading his book and interviews with Joan Plowright was that his workaholic status came from wanting to be absolutely certain that his much younger wife and family were cared for after he died since he was sure that he was going first.

I think Olivier was probably bi sexual. His attraction to men probably bothers him, tried to fight off. Of course you didn’t dare come out back then. Maybe why he was such a great actor. It was a kind of therapy. I do believe he loved Vivian, but she had a mental illness.

Mary Goodson- I agree. Both VL and Olivier extremely talented actors. VL considered Olivier a mentor about stage acting. Seems that Ms. Leigh really understood more about the camera and silver screen. Her iconic roles as Scarlett and Blanche are legendary. Olivier was right up there as one of the best Shakespearean actors ever.

Hi Age of Vintage, what a fabulous bio on the late great Sir Laurence Olivier. He started his career on the stage, & was chosen for many Shakespearean plays. His marriage to Vivien Leigh was quite fraught with many ups and downs. Nobody knew she had Bipolar disorder, for quite a while, she was portrayed as being difficult to work with, but this was later related to her disorder. Olivier was married to her for 21 years before she passed away, of Tuberculosis. He played in many great films including Wuthering Heights with Merle Oberon in 1939. Rebecca with Joan Fontaine in 1940, Pride & Prejudice with Greer Garson in 1940, Henry V in 1944, & The Prince & the Showgirl with Marilyn Monroe in 1957. This was just a small selection from his prolific career. Whilst in hospital in 1967, he discharged himself from hospital, when he found out Leigh had passed away from Tuberculosis. Even though he was remarried, he & Leigh always had remained friends. He married Joan Plowright in 1961 & was still married to her when he passed away. He died of prostate cancer, kidney stones & ultimately was plagued by a crippling muscle disorder which eventually killed him in 1989. He is outlived by his third wife Joan Plowright who is 91 years of age. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺🎬🎬📽📽❤💜💖💚💛💙💕⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘💋💋

I learned in one of my film classes that to prepare for the film version of Othello, Olivier worked hard and learned to speak at a much lower pitch than his natural voice, to better fit the character. The effect is pretty amazing. And then when the film came out, some reviewers complained about the unnatural "processing" used on Olivier's voice. There oughta be a law...

The use of a simultaneous spoken and written narrative is an interesting choice. It obviously allows people to better understand what is being said if they have difficulty with the spoken language or accent. However, it also tends to accentuate just how slowly the narrator is speaking. The average person reads three to five times as fast as they speak. I found myself reading the written narrative and figuratively twiddling my thumbs while waiting for the narrator to catch up. The other alternative was to skip ahead and miss some of the photographs. The written narrative also creates some problems when there are typos. For example, the narrator said, “Both Olivier and Leigh were secretly hankering for broader fame.” In the written narrative, the word “hankering” was mistakenly misspelled as “knackering”. “Hankering” essentially means “to long for” or “to desire”. “Knackering” refers to the slaughtering of animals. Were they longing for fame or did they want to slaughter their fame?

Well, I had no clu he was disgusted by the theater! I waited till the end but didn't expect your last statement. We may assume he was less disgusted with the latter than with the cinema, where he had such a wild ride with the love of his life, probably felt ashamed of his affairs after Leigh had the miscarriage/contracted TB and the discovery of her Bipolar Disorder as the cause of her personality. His personal life doesn't affect his acting genius, and rumors always surround someone who is this talented! That's for the seedy tabloids and teenagers!

Vivien loved him more than he had loved her. She also felt he was the superior actor, maybe her own anxieties destroyed the relationship in long term. But they had some passionate and great years together, what more can you want? Most relationships are not made to last forever.
@terrihilder8217
@terrihilder8217 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe so; over the long term. From an Anne Edwards biography it did say VL considered Olivier an absolute mentor on stage, in plays. And she learned a great deal about the stage from Olivier. She knew her limitations on stage. She didn't have the booming voice that Olivier did. Although it has been said in biographies that Ms. Leigh understood the camera and silver screen probably better than he did. Don't think VL felt as if she were in Olivier's shadow on the silver screen. Both were very talented. And Olivier was a great Shakespearean actor. Olivier's son Tarquin, from his first marriage has a KZbin video where he explains that his father Laurence Olivier considered VL the love of his life. And that was when he was married to Joan Plowright. Sometimes when a relationship turns toxic, you have to move on. And they both did. Back then there were few options for bipolar or mental illness.

Larry was (I only saw him in The Wuthering Heights) one of the greats - plus, you cannot be an actor wihtout theater but you can act in mere movies. British actors are so excellent (those who actually are) because it's probably in their genetic material, just as Russian Ballet is in te Russian blood...also having great schools for thise arts. British actors, at least, with no drama training are not true actors! Theater has no cameras/angles/zoom, you have to act your heart out as Sir Olvier did or Larry as he wanted to be called!

I've heard stories of where Olivier was not very kind to Vivien as she descended into the dark depths of mental illness. I also read where she walked in on him entangled in the arms of another man (some say it was Danny Kaye) and then he had her committed to sanitoriums and subjected to horribly cruel electric shock treatments. He was a cruel man. I am glad that Vivien insisted on being addressed as "Lady Olivier" until the day she died.

@@victoriawhite3662 Insightful comment by you. I agree. In several biographies I have read, both Olivier and Leigh could be abusive drunks at times towards each other. What I have gleaned from biographies, there were non- stop parties when they lived at Notley Abbey. Everyone from Bette Davis to Gary Cooper to most of the acting and stage royalty from Hollywood and the UK were there at different times. Even Churchill was in on the act, getting both to appear in a pro UK film "That Hamilton Woman" at the start of WW11. VL had frail health(tuberculosis) and her bipolar episodes got worse as she got older. This was before lithium or anything like that was available. What a shame. Can you imagine how many more movies VL would have been able to do if she had better health? I have read that both cheated. Both were consummate philanderers. Even when Olivier was with Joan Plowright and Vivien Leigh had Jack Merivale in her life I think they both still cared deeply about each other. I have read that they kept in touch by letters right up until VL's death in '67. Letters that were in the Leigh estate after her death.

Vivien Leigh was one of the most beautiful, talented female actors of her era. Her emotional outbursts are commonplace amongst performers, God only knows how long she had been sick with TB. You may want to do some reading about what some longtime friends of both such as Katharine Hepburn thought about Olivier after the split with VL. It wasn't flattering about him. It was "widely known" that Olivier had a noted ego. As Ms. Hepburn said, Olivier was a "great actor" and a "small man." Although many true friends understood that as VL's issues with mental illness had put a real strain on the marriage. What a shame this was before lithium was available. It could have made a real difference. I think the marriage had turned very toxic by the mid-fifties. That's not good for anyone, including Vivien Leigh. I don't blame anybody for leaving. It wasn't working at that point. Btw, VL had Jack Merivale in her life. He wasn't the great passion that Olivier had been, but there is a whole lot to be said for having a relationship with someone you can get along with and have peace of mind with. Merivale was very attentive to Ms. Leigh. Kind of reminds me what Lucille Ball said about living with Gary Morton after Desi Arnaz.
