One of the interesting things about South Korea’s split some people might be wondering why the inner urban area of Seoul is red while the outer urban area is blue, and then suburban is red again. This is essentially because their urban/rural split is mitigated by the fact that over the last 15-20 years the ONLY people who are able to purchase apartments in the inner urban areas are samsung executives. And that’s not even an exaggeration. Almost every single person (over 90%) which has a residence in the inner area of seoul either works in government, Samsung, LG, or Hyundai HQ. As those are the only jobs which can pay the extortinate rents

Yeah, the chaebol system was a terrible idea as it created monopolies like that. The current president is trying to fix that, tho, by setting up a new city south of Seoul, encouraging people there to have families to mitigate the population decline.

@@JustMilo702 I’m not bragging about it, I’m reminding you that South Korea wasn’t always what it is today and neither was the north. What I’m trying to say boils down to the simple fact that the people of the south broke free from their dictators and made themselves a country they would want to live in. The people in the north have yet to break free from their own dictator(-s) and they would probably wish for a better life in a better country, even if they are currently oppressed to the point that it’s difficult to even realise that. The south had a worse start, less to work with, arguably less committed allies and a government approximately comparable to the evils of the north we’re so familiar with, but in the end the south is just better. Back in one of my IR classes we went over how Democracies form or fail. After looking through all the data, the main takeaway (I forget exactly which Political Scientists wrote about this, sorry) was that it is actually very easy to form a Democratic government--BUT, Democratic Governments also very quickly collapse in areas with lower standards of living, or where people are just concerned with more base needs on the Maslow's Hierarchy like survival. Democracy is a luxury good. This does explain why some Democratic backsliding has been seen in some of the developed countries, and why some more progress has been made in developed ones. The current developed world has seen a big drop in the standard of living in a lot of areas, means less people care about higher ideals like democracy when they're just trying to get by. I'm no Korea expert, but I would imagine a similar thing would be happening there with their combination of very bad gender relations, cyberpunk-esque hypercapitalism hellscape, and very threatening northern neighbor. Meanwhile in areas like China now that more survival-based needs have been met, there's more talk and consideration for moving to a more democratic form of government in the younger generations. TL;DR: Democracies form VERY easily, but cannot survive low standards of living.

The 8 minor parties are all committed to upholding the status-quo and align with 'Socialism with Chinese characteristics', it's just that many of them have slightly different ideas about what should be done. I should also point out that the NPC has 2977 seats, 2,577 of which are held by members of the CCP. Additionally, the people don't get to vote for any major positions (such as Chairman, President/Vice-President, members of the Standing Committee). Elections aren't held where you get to choose from 2 or more people with substantially different platforms, they're held where you get to choose from 2 or more people who are appointed and approved by the CCP because they've been vetted and don't have any platforms that would threaten any real change (unless the CCP WANTED that change). You can vote for the face behind the boot that steps on you, not whether you're getting stepped on at all.

0:48 I don't think calling the polish martial law government a military junta is apt. Yes, the government was militarized, but it was not a transfer of power to it, much the opposite. From what I understand, the martial law actually started a series of events that were fundamental in keeping violence at bay during the severe changes of 80s east block, keeping soviets from intervening in the many protests that were happening at that time, and the leader that instated the martial law was already the de-facto dictator for 2 months prior. So while yes, we were under a dictature for 44 years, I think labeling the final 8 as a military junta doesn't really reflect how the power structures changed and what the people faced. The death toll of polish martial law seems to be lower than 100, which is very likely less than if the government gave in to the protests and USSR intervened to force reverting the changes, or ignored the protests and USSR intervened to get them under control. Or idk, officialy it seems like USSR leadership was going to let shit happen no matter what. Sounds farfetched, but then again, it was in the process of collapsing. Bigger issues back home or something Wildly offtopic, but that's only because I saw Poland claimed to have been military junta'd Unless that means sanation back in 1920s, which yeah, was a military junta.

Large groups are perplexingly good at guessing the correct answer to a multiple choice question, at slightly higher rates than completely random. This is the only advantage to democracy, and is entirely lost by any system with more that two parties, as the vast majority will frequently split the vote, giving office to minority rule. What percent of the vote did the UK's most popular party get? Like 30%? 70% of people being beholden to the whim of a minority isn't democracy.
@moontravellerjul20 күн бұрын
there is such a thing as proportional representation; germany for example has (to my understanding, as an australian) some form of proportional representation where some politicians are directly elected through popular vote, and others are taken from party pools proportional to the percentage that voted for that party. and even with that in consideration, the leading party in a parliamentary democracy doesn't magically control the government. they still need a proper majority to pass legislation, so if no single party has a majority, the leading party will usually form a coalition (sometimes throughout the whole government's term, sometimes for individual bills) with other parties, where members negotiate and compromise to deliver legislation that is broadly favourable to the constituent politicians and more representative of the majority of electors.
