Tate Martell is one of the most polarizing names in football. He was a five star prodigy, but sadly his time in college did not go to plan. He struggled at Ohio State and Miami before he went home to Vegas to try and save his career, even that didn't work and he retired, what went wrong?

The short answer, he simply wasn’t that good. This athleticism in youth football and high school simply didn’t translate to college football, where everyone is a good or great athlete. Also as a passer he was a bit overhype (rightfully so because of his amazing high school career) but once he had to compete with guys who could throw the ball as well. His arm limitations and what he could do athletically, had him over shine by better players. He never owned his football and passing skills, yes his arm wasn’t the greatest but for guys like manziel and baker, they made it work with very good athleistm and quickness to extend plays, as well as having quick and confident decision making and confidence. The fact that his didn’t get many reps at Miami and only played at UNLV a horrible team, when other QBs went down showcased how truly behind his was a Division 1 quarterback.

His high school head coach was named UNLV Head Coach when he came out of High School. He should have simply followed Tony Sanchez to UNLV because the entire time Sanchez was at UNLV, he was searching for a quarterback. Martell would have been that quarterback.

I can add some insight on what happened at UNLV: During Springball and Summer workouts it as a QB battle between Friel/Brumfield/Rogers which was an extremely tight group. Then last minute before Fall Camp Arroyo brings in Martell to seemingly just snipe the QB1 job from underneath them. It created huge resentment with the entire team based on his reputation. I thought Martell was the best QB in practice--but Arroyo couldn't give him a real shot without losing the team. He ended up naming Justin Rogers as the starting QB who was the worst QB out of the bunch...and completely incompetent until he was benched in favor of Doug Brumfield who was the starter until a season ending injury sidelined him for the true Freshman Cameron Friel who finished up the season as FOY for the MWC in a 2-10 season. UNLV is a mess, now they brought in Harrison Bailey from Tennessee now who will likely oust the current QBs from the starting job again.

Here's someone who deserves a video- Frank Ryan, the last quarterback to lead the Browns to an NFL championship. He was a starting quarterback for the Browns in the 1960s, including their championship year of 1964, and had a distinguished 13 year pro career (including 3 pro bowls). His off-the-field career was totally unique; in his NFL off-seasons, he got a PhD in mathematics and after football worked in teaching (he was a lecturer in math at Yale for ten years, presumably the only former NFL player to do that) and business. However, he played so long ago there may not be much film on him.

I remember being pretty excited when he signed with OSU. His mobility made him a perfect fit for what coach Meyer wanted in a qb and I do admit I fell into the hype about him because his HS career was so incredible. The Buckeyes were just coming off having JT Barrett and Braxton Miller but that style of play was getting figured out and it showed whenever OSU wasn't able to just win on their talent alone. Once Ryan Day took over it was clear Tate didn't really have a place in the offense anymore and in the years since it seems like just about everyone except a few triple option teams have gone away from using run first QBs. I didn't particularly mind his attitude at first but there is a fine line between confident and arrogant that quickly dissappears when you aren't living up to expectations. Quite frankly the game passed him by and he was either too arrogant or not talented enough as a QB to adapt.

Urban Meyer leaving OSU played a big role in Taint's downfall. You can tell Urban liked Taint and it looked like Taint would be starting in 2 years. Once Urban left it felt like no coach in college football believed in Taint and his talents at QB. That tweet Taint sent to Justin Fields about transferring to OSU sealed his fate. He went from the "chosen one" to the clown in a blink of an eye. The fact that every college he transferred to wanted him to play a different position shows that he wasn't that good at qb....

one of his problems I think was establishing a pattern of school hopping thru out his whole football career practically and so as to never establish any chemistry w any given team...at least at ohio state he played a little and had some stats but the problem there was he wasn't beating out guys like Haskins or Fields...he may have had a better chance to play after them and w the offensive talent there he may have been ok or better..then again does CJ Stroud still happen??

His problem in my opinion is lack of accountability , bouncing around that many schools and not playing at any of them it's clearly not the coaches or schools that are the issue....all you're doing at that point is transferring the problem which is yourself. It hurts to look in the mirror and be 100% honest with yourself and tell yourself things you do not want to hear but you know are true but it is the only way you will improve in life....like you said he never failed before heading off to college and he still thought he was the man regardless where he was. You have to eat the truth to be able to progress...i also never understood why he didn't just drop down a division so he could get on the field he kept going to one big school to another, maybe he felt like he was too good to attend D1-AA school but in reality he wasn't too good to attend a school like that

Part of the answer is that college football changed. IF Urban Meyer remained as coach, Tate may have been a good college quarterback similar to JT Barret, who is playing Canadien Football. But when Ryan Day became coach, he was part of a trend in College Footballl towards a more Pro style passing game, which did not fit Tate's skillset. Coach Day now produces top level pro QBs on a regular basis, a trend that will likely continue. I did wish things worked out better for this young man, but timing sucks sometimes.

Yes, its a legit point that Day taking over for Urban was a factor in Martell losing favor. He really should have gone from OSU to the MAC conference. At least 9 of the 12 teams would have given Tate a starting job. His size wouldn't have been much an issue, and they get on TV all the time. Many thought he would transfer to Cincinnati or Western Kentucky. Guess having friends on Miami was not the best for him.

Burrow transferred AFTER Haskins won the job. It was a neck and neck battle that Haskins ultimately took QB1.

He did, though, he was already prepared to leave. Meyer said the Michigan game won Haskins the job, the spring game was simply his to lose. Burrow gave it a shot, though was prepared for the outcome that played out.

Honestly, I suspect his dad probably pissed off the wrong people everywhere he went. He certainly pissed of many people while Tate was at BG. His mother was a wonderful person who would talk to anyone. But dad was the complete opposite.

If a college level player chooses to enter the transfer portal more than twice they are a lost cause and only a desperate college football program would take them on.

I think he could have been alright, like if he went to UNLV originally, or transferred to a better fit after Ohio State. Though that would require him to have the right mindset, this is a prime example of poor psychology which impacted his confidence to the point he sucks.

He was always a clown since high school; a douche who was handed everything to him on a silver platter from mommy and daddy, an obnoxious twitter fingers player, and a make-it-all-about me attention whore. He always liked to spark shit with other players, even on his own team, all the way since HS. Even on QB1 these traits can be observed, he talks and acts on the show as if he has it all made, like he was going to go into college with the same shitty antics and find instant success. He's a good athlete; hell I'd say he was a good QB, but it's clear that his immaturity in itself not only led his coaches to not trust him as a leader on the field, but also might have been the reason that he never took the steps needed to develop into a true college athlete; he likely didn't want to give up his pride and listen to those that wanted to help him succeed.

Success is not guaranteed. Players have to be committed to improvement each year and compete to be the best. Truth told, he was undersized and overrated. He would have been better off going to a school like UNLV or Nevada at first.

Hes the reason why he failed lol after he heard about Stills its highlighted that getting the offer is what was his goal was so once he received it and lived up to it in all honesty he believed he was better then he actually was he thought he was a 5 star power 5 QB that could play at an Ohio State or Miami when he could have went to a Cal or UNLV play 2, 3 years develop then transfer at worse he would be an UDFA like D King was
