The short answer, he simply wasn’t that good. This athleticism in youth football and high school simply didn’t translate to college football, where everyone is a good or great athlete. Also as a passer he was a bit overhype (rightfully so because of his amazing high school career) but once he had to compete with guys who could throw the ball as well. His arm limitations and what he could do athletically, had him over shine by better players. He never owned his football and passing skills, yes his arm wasn’t the greatest but for guys like manziel and baker, they made it work with very good athleistm and quickness to extend plays, as well as having quick and confident decision making and confidence. The fact that his didn’t get many reps at Miami and only played at UNLV a horrible team, when other QBs went down showcased how truly behind his was a Division 1 quarterback.

His high school head coach was named UNLV Head Coach when he came out of High School. He should have simply followed Tony Sanchez to UNLV because the entire time Sanchez was at UNLV, he was searching for a quarterback. Martell would have been that quarterback.
@shanebrown4732 жыл бұрын
I can add some insight on what happened at UNLV: During Springball and Summer workouts it as a QB battle between Friel/Brumfield/Rogers which was an extremely tight group. Then last minute before Fall Camp Arroyo brings in Martell to seemingly just snipe the QB1 job from underneath them. It created huge resentment with the entire team based on his reputation. I thought Martell was the best QB in practice--but Arroyo couldn't give him a real shot without losing the team. He ended up naming Justin Rogers as the starting QB who was the worst QB out of the bunch...and completely incompetent until he was benched in favor of Doug Brumfield who was the starter until a season ending injury sidelined him for the true Freshman Cameron Friel who finished up the season as FOY for the MWC in a 2-10 season. UNLV is a mess, now they brought in Harrison Bailey from Tennessee now who will likely oust the current QBs from the starting job again.

one of his problems I think was establishing a pattern of school hopping thru out his whole football career practically and so as to never establish any chemistry w any given team...at least at ohio state he played a little and had some stats but the problem there was he wasn't beating out guys like Haskins or Fields...he may have had a better chance to play after them and w the offensive talent there he may have been ok or better..then again does CJ Stroud still happen??

Here's someone who deserves a video- Frank Ryan, the last quarterback to lead the Browns to an NFL championship. He was a starting quarterback for the Browns in the 1960s, including their championship year of 1964, and had a distinguished 13 year pro career (including 3 pro bowls). His off-the-field career was totally unique; in his NFL off-seasons, he got a PhD in mathematics and after football worked in teaching (he was a lecturer in math at Yale for ten years, presumably the only former NFL player to do that) and business. However, he played so long ago there may not be much film on him.

I remember being pretty excited when he signed with OSU. His mobility made him a perfect fit for what coach Meyer wanted in a qb and I do admit I fell into the hype about him because his HS career was so incredible. The Buckeyes were just coming off having JT Barrett and Braxton Miller but that style of play was getting figured out and it showed whenever OSU wasn't able to just win on their talent alone. Once Ryan Day took over it was clear Tate didn't really have a place in the offense anymore and in the years since it seems like just about everyone except a few triple option teams have gone away from using run first QBs. I didn't particularly mind his attitude at first but there is a fine line between confident and arrogant that quickly dissappears when you aren't living up to expectations. Quite frankly the game passed him by and he was either too arrogant or not talented enough as a QB to adapt.

Part of the answer is that college football changed. IF Urban Meyer remained as coach, Tate may have been a good college quarterback similar to JT Barret, who is playing Canadien Football. But when Ryan Day became coach, he was part of a trend in College Footballl towards a more Pro style passing game, which did not fit Tate's skillset. Coach Day now produces top level pro QBs on a regular basis, a trend that will likely continue. I did wish things worked out better for this young man, but timing sucks sometimes.

Yes, its a legit point that Day taking over for Urban was a factor in Martell losing favor. Urban was all about the run game FIRST and dual threat guys from Alex Smith to Tim Tebow to Braxton Miller to JT Barrett to Cardale Jones. All those guys could plant a foot and go and were only avg throwing the football. Day prefers statues who throw darts. Martell's days were numbered once Urban left.

I think a team like fresno state bulldogs. They had more then 1 QB go pro. Smaller school closer to home and probably closer to the culture he was use to. Should of would of could of we all have our opinions I enjoy reading the comments.

I think he could have been alright, like if he went to UNLV originally, or transferred to a better fit after Ohio State. Though that would require him to have the right mindset, this is a prime example of poor psychology which impacted his confidence to the point he sucks.

I watched that season of QB1 and he obviously comes from money. I'm sure his family will give him every opportunity to live well. So can't hate on a dude that's privileged and rich

you can answer the question in the title by literally just looking at the dude. you could tell from the very beginning the kid thinks he's the second coming.

I’m still waiting on why he failed at UNLV. All you did was give a history of his career.

He was used to being a big fish in a small pond. Dude didn’t know how to work for a starting spot anywhere he went.

I said some mean shit to Miami fans about the kid but never will you catch me actively rooting against a 19-20 year old. Hope whatever he has next works.

Ohio State is wrong for picking another quarterback over Tate Martell he was supposed to be our guy in 2019 regardless of the coach change
