As someone that watched nearly every game he played at UW, his decision making could be questioned at times. IMHO: Pennix relied on WRs that outclassed their defenders (they win jump balls almost every time). The formula was obvious. Won't happen at the next level. Pennix repeatedly scrambled under a not-so-great offensive line and he would run while his great WRs found an opening, then last second made a play. Awesome, but not useful for the NFL. At the next level, he'll just be sacked. His offense required little recognition of defenses and he showed no high IQ doing that. He has arm talent. He has accuracy, but also has lots of spurts of terrible and he neeeds to read defenses... which wasn't a requirement. Not expecting much from Pennix in the NFL. @kevinpopham29568 ай бұрын
So, identifying one on one coverage and constantly getting the ball to your best playmakers is now a bad thing? Also has a video titled Caleb Williams (kind of) struggles on film. Caleb struggled to make plays within the structure of the offense, and he takes alot of bad sacks because of it. Williams took 33 sacks this season, Penix took 32 sacks in 5 years as a starting qb. Penix gets the ball out of his hand and gives good players a chance to make a play. He does little things that keep his team out of bad down and distance situations and gives them chances to win games. I'd rather have a guy who does what he is supposed to do to help his team win than a more talented player who performs below expectations trying to play hero ball all the time.
@banksta38 ай бұрын
That's a crazy stat. Obviously people see Williams creating and wanna label him as the next Mahomes. But Mahomes has ELITE pocket presence, and will find the RB for a 4 yard gain. Williams on the other hand, misses open guys and takes sacks while directing traffic down field. Obviously he's young and can be coached up, but is Matt Eberflus and Shane Waldron the duo to do it?

@rawihago49658 ай бұрын
This video made no sense. It starts off praising Penix for being able to "make all the throws" and also some throws he's never seen a QB make, for finding holes in places no QB finds holes, and for his willingness to push the ball downfield with the best of them. I thought Rollins was about to anoint him the next CJ Stroud. But then he just went on a negative nacny parade. He actually criticized Penix for always being willing to give Odunze a shot on one-one coverage -- like this is a bad thing? And like it proves that Penix owes his success to Odunze, bu apparently none of Odunze's success was helped by hving Penix deliver the ball to him at the first hint of a crack of daylight. if Penix was Fools Gold, has Rollins figured out what likely happends wwhen a highly talented WR doesnt have a pretty talented QB thrwoing to him? Nothing, thats what happens. The WR talent is wasted, he may still put up good numbers but the offense as a whole is decidedly un-explosive. Happens all the time.

Not to mention something like 40 fumbles for Williams, usually at the worst possible time after he just ignored a wide open guy for an easy first down.
@mattr69738 ай бұрын
I ain’t gonna lie, I completely disagree with most of this video. When he misses receivers, most of the time he misses on their side, which is a big plus trait that gets lost often. He dominates from the pocket, but definitely is weak if he gets flushed out, however you can win with being dominant from the pocket. I think he’ll need to land in a spot with weapons and at least an average o line, but I believe he can succeed at the NFL level
@CJStew067 ай бұрын
I definitely see and agree with the questions about his accuracy and touch over the middle, but I'd be nervous to write this guy off. Not many college QBs show the kind of aptitude and confidence within the pocket like Penix. He's a bit of a throwback in that way. Always stays behind his blockers, doesn't panic or bail on the pocket, and rarely takes sacks. I'll sacrifice some accuracy concerns for a guy who is tough and calm in the midst of chaos.

So you think that college receivers who "bail" him out are going to be MORE talented than pro players? The ability to layer in passes in coverage is a remarkably tough thing to do, and if this guy has the vision to spot those opportunities, that is massive. And every clip that you're showing basically shows him not making an absolutely perfect pass, but 90% of passes aren't perfect and require receiver adjustments. I've watched every single play that Mahomes has made over the course of the past 7 years and he is far from perfect. And yet he's considered one of the best that has ever played the game. Additionally, who's to say this guy has to come right out of the gate and start playing? A team could put him behind somebody like Kirk Cousins for a couple years and develop his talents. This seems like it's going to age poorly.

You’re wrong about Penix. He is absolutely an NFL quarterback. The NFL is full of QBs who dink and dunk and we’ve all seen those guys get picked off when the receiver pops the ball up, or the QB doesn’t see the linebacker in the middle of the field. What most NFL QB’s can’t do is what Penix excels at, the long ball, cross field throws to the sidelines, dropping the ball in at 40 yards to a well covered receiver a foot inside the the sideline. I’ll take that any time over a dink and dunk interception machine. And the other thing Penix is, is a winner. He doesn’t have to be accurate to throw a receiver open, aka putting his receivers between the ball and the defender. But I would argue he’s as accurate as any of the top 6 QBs. Can he improve on the short game? Sure. Who couldn’t use a better short game. A lot of QBs like Daniels will just scramble on what should be a short throw. Penix will throw it away and live for the next down. Is that bad? Better than an INT. Scrambling is ok except that’s how you get hurt as an NFL QB. Penix has only had two complete seasons which were at UW. He didn’t get injured because he became a pocket passer. And he became a great pocket passer. He’s smart and trainable. I think it’s a mistake to think Penix can’t learn in the NFL and develop a short game. On everything else he is WAY better than other top QB’s. 10:56

Also the stuff you harkened on the most - finding layered throws and guys open in the flat to curl? That happened a TON in the Texas game, yet you showed none of that?

I’m an Indiana fan and I’m thankful for Penix giving us the only season worth remembering in my lifetime but I have to try to remove my bias. I don’t see 1st rounder like many people do. It’s not even mainly the injury or the age (all though that plays a factor), it’s his lack of efficiency at the intermediate level of the field that’s just a killer. It’s because he doesn’t throw many balls with touch. Hope he succeeds though, there’s not many IU representatives in the NFL.

Penix will EASILY end up a top 3 QB from this draft 😭 idk what you’re waffling about dude; btw he throws with insane leverage
@dariangorman48308 ай бұрын
Man, you’re off base. Deep ball placement, pre snap recognition, best post snap recognition in the draft, and best natural thrower. Best back shoulder throw, and ability to both the lasers and layers throws. Led college football in big time throws by a lot, and typically throws deep incompletions when he is trying to throw it away to a spot the defender can’t get too it. I can find more incompletions and inaccuracy on Caleb, JDs, or Mayes tape. He shows plenty of tape where he has perfect placement. At this point, you’re just being a hater, and I’m also here to see this age like Milk.
@dariangorman48308 ай бұрын
Also, gets rid of the ball quickly, doesn’t get sacked when pressured, sacked on 5% of plays he’s pressured, a lot of his incompletions deep are ones he kind of throws away in the sense, he thows it away from defenders, to a spot likely nobody gets it, but if anyone does, it’s his WR. Also, you’re going to fault him for aggressively taking shots, in a offensive scheme that runs on stretching the field? Also, he has more good deep passes, and big time throws, than anyone in this class. He had a 65% comp percentage with the highest depth of target. I can find just as many alarming stats with the other prospects, in fact, more alarming, and tape. Caleb holds onto to the ball an alarming amount of time, JD lack’s anticipation, plays a very college offense, the most open throws in the draft, Maye struggles throwing outside of the numbers, and with his speed of progressions, and mechanics, also takes too many sacks when pressured, Nix has a average arm, doesn’t go past 1st progression, and most of his passes were at, or behind the line. The MOST pro ready, wasn’t translate to the pros game, is Penix.

@ToofKilla8 ай бұрын
I agree that he's missing some polish, but as we know from the past, polish doesn't mean anything in college. Penix has elite arm strength and at times great ball placement on 50-50 balls. The concerns the NFL will have are his injury history. Also, he has come up in a modern college spread offense, which are notorious for being coached incorrectly in order to simplify them (it works until you face competent defenses like Michigan). All the knocks here can be trained to be corrected, especially if he sits a year or two in a decent system and learns to run an offense that's not always in shotgun. Calling him Fools Gold seems like a write off that is undeserved.

About halfway into the video right now, and I can't help but think about Russell Wilson a little bit. Russ did this sort of thing all the time in Seattle - didn't like checking the ball down, especially after Marshawn moved on to Oakland, let Tyler Lockett and Doug Baldwin figure out their own routes based on how *they* read their coverage, and preferred to hang back and wait for a deep ball when pressured. Wilson had ultra-rare deep accuracy and was, at his peak, one of the most difficult QBs to corral in NFL history, though. Penix profiles closer to Geno Smith, but Geno can and will check the ball down when necessary, and doesn't take sacks when his deep option isn't there.

I had a brother who could spout college stats ad nauseum on players and use them to say who’d be great in the NFL. It made me groan. But I’ve said for as long as I can remember that, if you want to know who’s got a real shot, start first with his mechanics and traits and only use statistics maybe as a tiebreaker. Look at Marino. It’s been awhile since I saw his college stats but I believe he had a 1 on his TD-2-INT ratio his senior season. Just looking at that you’d be tempted to say, “Bust!” Well, as Lee Corso might say, “Not so fast my friends!” Marino obviously was one helluva arm talent with a quick release and you had to figure that would help him against NFL DBs. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes had such similar arm strength is was eery: each could throw 62 MPH and 80 yards. Obviously Mahomes has done better but Allen is no slouch and Josh’s story isn’t finished yet. Anyways you can teach a QB to read defenses but you can’t teach him arm strength, and teaching him new mechanics will be tricky at 22.

Disagree with this entire video. Every rookie has skills to work on, but you get drafted for having an elite talent/skill to fall back on. Penix quick release, and arm strength would make him good for teams like the Bucs, or Pittsburgh where they have bigger receivers. You don't have to attack the same situation with the same solution. Penix will be great in the right situation that plays to his strengths and has bigger receivers. He would not be good in a dink and dunk offense, so his success is largely contingent on a matching offense, but how is that different from every other player in the NFL for the most part? Penix with his arm is equivalent to Lamar Jackson with his legs when no one thought could be successful with his brand of football. For my 2 cents you will wind up eating these words in a year, maybe two.
@comet528 ай бұрын
He sets his feet correctly on the deep stuff and it's elite, but on the short/intermediate throws he often faces the line and chucks it sidearm, reliying on his raw strength. This gets even worse as he moves/throws off platform. He needs an NFL team that coaches this out of him, then his short/intermediate stuff could become elite as well if that happens. A lot of NFL success comes down to where a guy lands. If Mahomes landed in Arizona we'd probably be like "nice guy but not a winner" right now. I like Penix as a prospect but the injury history is also a concern.
@RogerReese-q8i8 ай бұрын
This guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Yes Penix had some stretches of inaccuracy but some of his description of him missing guys on plays he is clearly purposely putting the ball where his guy can get it and no one else. He understands leverage very well and he knew his guys could go up for it or no one else. This is understanding the game. He will have some challenges but I am very intrigued.

I saw Washington vs Oregon, Washington State, Texas, and Michigan, from what I saw in those games he threw some tight window passes that would translate to the NFL, just some straight up laser beam throws; plus the clutch moments within most of those games proved he's got nerves of steel. And he did something Caleb Williams didn't do, beat Utah. 😂
@ClavisRa8 ай бұрын
Every example you showed of him getting "bailed out" by his receivers has the receiver with leverage to play the ball over the defender. That's good ball placement. You can argue with the play design, but he seems to be executing the throws the play has created, on time, accurate, with good shape and power on the ball. He also has good footwork. Some of the so-called top QB prospects have atrocious footwork. He also throws on schedule and in structure. The supposed top 3 of this class is wildly overhyped. This is going to be a good QB class, but the best QBs are coming on later picks. The NFL has been in love with QBs with "athletic traits" who can make plays out of structure for decades now. And they're basically always wrong. The miss rate on top QB drafts is pretty crazy. When they hit, it's on a QB who's accurate and plays on time in structure.

The way pro-Penix people talk about him is very misleading. I like you noticed how bad his footwork, accuracy & poise in the pocket is because I was surprised by the same flaws because id heard from talking heads just how good he is. If anyone wants to see what im talking about go watch his game against Michigan were he looked completely overwhelmed. You may say "Thats Michigan" but the truth is NFL Defenses are better than Michigan. Stats in College are not important when it comes to transitioning to the NFL & I'm surprised anyone calls Penix an elite pocket passer because most of his highlights are his receivers making outstanding catches with Penix looking akward when he throws. Penix also throws a lot of sidearm flick of the wrist short passes that will get picked off in the NFL.
@williamsampson44605 ай бұрын
I strongly believe that almost everyone blaming Penix for the title game are totally wrong. It is lazy to only look at the stats and see if a pass was completed or not. There is one play in particular where I am astonished that Penix has received blame instead of Odunze. On the supposed bad Penix overthrow his throw was actually perfect. Odunze mis-read the defense on an option route and ran a horrible route. Penix threw the ball exactly where Odunze should have been. Most critics are clueless about how the UW offense is supposed to work or what happened on certain important plays. Penix throws to tiny windows while throwing his receivers open who have little to no separation with anticipation and accuracy while manipulating the defense and efficiently going through reads and progressions. He is the most advanced QB in these important areas by many miles. The other top QB's are all one read scrambler project QB's. The ball looks so much better off Penix's hand compared to all of the other QB's. The ball just jumps of his hand while the other QB's cannot throw with power and accuracy outside the hashmarks downfield. Injuries are the only concern. His footwork can be improved which would increase his ceiling and improve short throw accuracy while reducing the number of throws that sail. These things are very clear to me watching tape of Penix and other QB's. Stats say Penix gets rid of the ball of the fastest and takes the least number of sacks. These stats say he also has great pocket awareness. Penix had zero help from the rest of the offense in the title game. UW had no running game, awful O-line play, receivers running bad routes, misreading the defense, and dropping passes. Michigan's front 7 dominated while their secondary got away with 5 or 6 of the most obvious penalties you will ever see go uncalled.
