For committing thousands of burglaries he was sentenced to seven months, so your tax dollars are safe, although I'd hardly call it justice.
@bowdiddly6172
@bowdiddly6172 2 жыл бұрын
@@matehavlik4559 not really, that cost to tax payers was still pretty high, consider this: According to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the average annual cost of incarceration in Federal prisons in 2010 was $28,284 per inmate. Now I couldn't find Maine specifically but the average around it was $50K. So add the cost of the trial and even 7 months cost close to $50K. I'm not sure it was worth it. If you're gonna do it, do it, but ya, 7 months was just a vacation for him from finding food.

@bowdiddly6172 2 жыл бұрын
@@matehavlik4559 oh, gotcha. No, I mean for what he caused in the community, it was not justice for them, I'd think. From an outsiders look, I don't think it was nearly enough, at the same time, I can stand by what I originally said, because I was not directly effected by this man. That is, in my opinion, the problem with justice. The death penalty, I believe in it, however, the one who actually delivers it should be someone whom was harmed by the act. And if they can not do it, then it should fall to life in prison. Make sense?

@@bowdiddly6172 Damn, what kind of medieval monster do you imagine I am, death penalty for burglary? 😀 (JK, I understood.) Yeah, there could be a sense of justice served if the punishment is carried out by the victims, but I don't think most communities are equipped for that. But even if he was let loose, I bet he was wishing he'd be in jail instead, when the IRS got their hands on him after he hadn't filed a tax form in twenty years 😆😆

When I was a kid living in southern Mississippi I practically lived out in the woods. I learned a lot of stuff just by trial and error. Sure, I stole some supplies from my parents' kitchen from time to time, but how much can one kid carry, right? When I got to be a troubled teenager in the 90s, I built my own log cabin one summer on an island in the fork of two rivers. I learned the basics of how to build it from the book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder as a child. It was only a couple miles away from some run-down houses. Due to the number of fallen trees and debris in and around the island, the only way to access it was by swimming and then climbing up the side. My cabin blended in so well that I'd watch people in their boats and jet skis all day long on the river, and they had no idea I was there. Thanks to the locals always grilling or fishing nearby, no one thought twice about the smoke from my short-lived cooking fires. I lived there on and off for years until a hurricane finally flooded the rivers high enough to wash away my cabin and most of my supplies in the early 2000s.

I have experienced this. Although some people would comment that I was mentally ill, I went off grid for three years, and lived in a Forrest, when I felt I needed space from my very stressful life. Although not even on the same scale of extremes as Christopher in terms of time and temperature, I didn't even have a tent. I realize now that to outside society I was ill, but I will say that I was at peace. I didn't steal or beg, but lived off the land, and bathed everyday, I had nothing, and needed nothing. I am 'better' now, but I will say that sometimes I miss the peace and solitude.

Not sure if it really adds to it but you didn't describe the houses he broke into very well, which explains why he wasn't caught for long. He was not breaking into regular houses, he was breaking into "camps" ie secluded summer houses far away from other houses in the woods. Many Mainers have these camps, so it would be super easy to break into them, and not get caught since most far rural places in Maine actually have a police presents, mostly wardens and rangers, or constables.

I camped out a couple nights in January with a man made shelter just to see what winter survival is like and I literally thought I was going to die of hypothermia trying to sleep and stay warm at night. 3 decades of that is just so mind blowing

He is under court ordered psychiatric care and attends Alcohol Anonymous meetings ( he stole so much alcohol he has a drinking problem.) The guy romanticizes what he did but the reality is pretty shabby. He had a propane stove and a stockpile of propane tanks for heat , he just didnt burn wood to avoid smoke. He had several car batteries to power his radio and TV , the cops interviewing him found out he was a Rush Limbaugh fan. His "Survival Skills" 1. Watch the vacation houses on the lake to figure out their schedules and see where they hid their "spare keys". 2. At two o'clock in the morning steal a canoe from the neaby camp , put his dead batteries, battery charger and empty propane tanks in it and use it to get to a vacant house, use the key to get in and disable the alarm ( he was an alarm technician ). 3.Use his automotive battery charger to recharge any of his dead batteries , swap out his empty propane cylinders with full ones , grab a shower , do laundry and eat a meal. 4. Grab any loose change or booze he saw laying around and clean up any messes he made. 5. Get back to his camp , unload and return the canoe. 6. Get drunk while watching TV or listening to the radio. During the winter he couldnt leave his camp without leaving behind footprints in the snow , so he would listen to the weather forcast and wait for a snowstorm. Just before it started to snow he'd walk to one of the properties he knew would be vacant all winter ( like the childrens camp ) and steal anything he short off because the fresh snow would cover his tracks. How he got caught was the Sheriffs office realized he was visiting the Childrens Campground office on a fairly regular basis and he knew how to disable the alarm, so they hid a web cam in the building. While he stole thousands of dollars in cash they only found 300 at the camp. So he when he needed something he couldnt steal he'd walk into a store and buy it.

Having been burgled myself years ago, when I lived with my 2 very young sons, I can empathize with the people of the town. When we came home, and I started to notice things moved, then things that were missing. I went through the whole house, noticing more and more things that had been taken, until it finally sunk in that, yes, we had been robbed. Someone had come into our home while we were out, and had stolen our things and gone through all our drawers. I threw all our clothes in the laundry because I couldn't stand the thought of us putting on clothes that a stranger had touched. I called the police, and they did come and take a statement and go through the house, but I knew that whoever had done it would probably never be caught. I was so stressed out and on edge for months, I had trouble sleeping, I hardly ate, it really affected me. So, I can certainly understand how the town felt...you feel violated...someone has come into the space where you're supposed to feel safe, and he took that feeling of safety and security away from them. Having said all that, I realize that Christopher meant no harm, he just went about things in the wrong way. If people did know about him, I'm sure they would have respected his wishes to be left alone. And I'm sure that there would have been people who would have willingly given him what he needed....a flashlight, an old blanket, some hiking or camping equipment that was no longer used, food, water, etc. I would have had no problem leaving out a bag of food with some warm socks and toiletries once in a while. My daughter and I made up quite a few care packages for people in our community when word went out (on our community FB page) that there was someone in need during our hard lockdown here in Ontario. As did lots of other people. I think people are basically caring and want to help others. And I'd like to think that people would have helped Christopher, if only he had asked.

@@lofturhjalmarsson9896 I know it was completely psychological, and that nothing had been done to the clothes. I just couldn't stand the thought that someone I didn't know had touched them. It made them feel dirty. There's no way I would have been able to wear them again without washing them first. It was something I could do to make myself feel a little better after what had happened. It's a horrible feeling to know that a stranger has been in your home and has gone through and touched your things. It's hard to explain that exact feeling to someone who hasn't had their home broken into.

@@sstritmatter2158 I definitely don’t blame anyone being unsettled about it in the area! I know he didn’t “intend” harm to people, but he was not only stealing from them (many of which likely couldn’t really afford to lose the things he took)-he was accidentally messing with the locals psychologically. As for your “being cornered” concern, I completely agree! A law abiding citizen (not on the run) doesn’t just walk into the forest unprepared one day and never return-unless there is something else going on, some type of mental illness. My favorite uncle did something similar (except he was extremely prepared when he did it and is very happy now) -because he struggles with schizophrenia and just can’t stand having people and all the noise constantly around him.
