The Battle of Binh Le Nguyen was the first close-quarter battle between the Tran Dynasty Army and the Mongol Army.

We often forget how powerful the element of surprise can be in warfare.
@greatboxingen3 күн бұрын
Indeed. It can throw off even the most powerful armies and shift the course of a battle, often more than sheer numbers or strength.

Incredible strategy! The Trần forces fought the land itself, and won.

The Trần Dynasty’s guerrilla tactics remind me of how the Vietnamese fought during the American War.

You’ve got a point there

No, you are wrong, guerrilla is a communist propaganda.

America withdraw their plan. Vietnamese fought very hard and very brave, but not solely won the war without the Chinese and Soviet!
@phamchien457418 сағат бұрын
That’s right. Vietnam used everything they had, including help, even tens of thousands of anti-war Americans contributed to that victory, the reason why the Vietnamese did not hate the Americans but hated the Chinese. But they were the ones who directly fought, planned, with much limited resources compared to the US and its allies (Korea, Philippines, Australia, Thailand, etc.). That created a historic victory.

Correction: 9:28 should be simply said as the 9th month to the 12th month. Because 1. These are lunar months following the Chinese system, and you cannot call them with Western names (think what happens if you call the Jewish month of Nisan as "March" - however I'm not a Jew) 2. Climatic accuracy - as September still is fairly warm by Vietnamese standards there, October just gets some cooling. It only gets really cold in around November So you should correct some supposed lunar months in Vietnamese/Chinese figure speeches, and keep the solar months in the narration.

How did the environment of Vietnam shape the military strategies employed by both sides?
@greatboxingen3 күн бұрын
The Mongols, accustomed to open battlefields, struggled with guerrilla tactics and challenging terrain. The Viet used these conditions to their advantage, employing ambushes and hit-and-run tactics. The Mongols tried to adapt with siege warfare and naval operations but faced difficulties with supply lines and the harsh environment.

Correction: Vietnam was not two states back then only dai Viet were Vietnamese. The champa kingdom were a separate ethnic and linguistic people closely related to filipinos, Malays and Indonesians or Austronesians. We viet's didnt conquer that land and people til the 1700s and most of southern Vietnam today was a part of the Cambodian kingdom. Stop calling champa a vietnamese kingdom.....that's like calling native American tribes as British tribe just kuz anglo Saxons have it today. Lol

What did the Mongols learn from their defeats in Đại Việt that influenced their later campaigns?
@greatboxingen3 күн бұрын
After their failures in Vietnam, the Mongols were more cautious about overextending their supply lines and underestimated the challenges posed by Japan’s geography, including its island nature and the difficulty in maintaining a large fleet.

How did the Trần Dynastys use of guerilla warfare mirror tactics used in later wars around the world?
@greatboxingen3 күн бұрын
Later Vietnamese forces used those dense forests and river systems to their advantage in the Vietnam War.

Why do you think the Mongols were so confident they could conquer Đại Việt, even after previous failures?
@greatboxingen3 күн бұрын
The Mongols were confident because they had conquered so much of Asia by then and thought their military power could overcome anything. They likely underestimated the Vietnamese terrain and the resilience of the people.

Could the Vietnamese resistance have been as effective without General Trần Hưng Đạo’s leadership?
@greatboxingen3 күн бұрын
It’s hard to imagine the Vietnamese resistance being as effective without General Tran Hung Dao’s leadership.
@huuhinh793 күн бұрын
Trần Hưng Đạo's leadership was the main reason why Vietnamese resistance was so effective. But rest assured, Vietnamese people love their freedom more than anything in this world. It has been like that since the beginning of the nation (4 thousand years ago). Vietnam is the only country I know which was conquered by China for almost 1000 years without losing its identity and culture. So, if there wasn't Trần Hưng Đạo, there will be another Vietnamese leader in that time to lead the Vietnamese people to victory. Vietnamese history has proven that many times over. - Just look at the Indochina war with the French and the last Vietnamese war with the American...

One big lesson for all superpowers - Mongols/Chinese/Americans: don’t mess with Vietnam.
@ddzang4 күн бұрын
Logistics and foreign environment. Finally, these 2 elements told them that there are limits in this world for their tried and tired formula. In a few decades later, the Mongols disintegrated because other peoples in other areas of the world grew more population and the native Han people out-assimilated the mongol rulers.
