Crosswind block is a Zinc diecasted part. Among other things, diecasting defects include voids, shortfill (short shot), and poor melt, both of which can impact strength. The oscillating block groove (gear pin interface) is formed by a sliding cavity block, and if off center (poor mold timing), could also cause the wall thickness to be nonuniform (as thick as it should be). Root Cause of each defect is a poorly controlled process. (Retired Industrial Engineer, manufacturing geek)

I’m sorry that this Penn reel was broken. I sometimes feel like you have more faels that fail than I do but then I only do a small fraction of the no. of reels that yiu do. I had a few reels that had broken oscillation blocks but more that have had broken oscillation gears. I would definitely replace that oscillation gear as well. It’s great that you’ll be able to repair this reel. I got in a very nice Daiwa BG15 today. It is still so cold in my garage that I can’t stand to work out there but everything on this BG15 is working fine. There is a loud bearing sound so they might need replacing but other than some cosmetic wear it is a very beautiful reel. The only one I don’t have now is a BG13 but since I have two BG10 reels I’ll probably stop. Stay warm in the days ahead as it looks like we all on the east coast are going to get winter weather and frigid temperatures. - Chris
