Your playing inspires me - I was never the best shredder, try though I certainly did. But even my teacher told another student who was also my friend he was jealous of my "feel" and expression, which I don't know that you can teach someone, you just learn by instinct. But you, you take that school of thought, that way of playing and turn it up to 11 and I absolutely love it. Your style is instantly recognisable, wildly expressive and far more memorable than most anyone I can think of. Here's to blazing your own trail!

Thank you Chris. My Dad's absolute favorite bluesman was Johnny Winter, I grew up sitting in front of the stereo with his vinyls cranked with stupid grins on both of our faces. I lost him going on 16 years ago, and while I have those vinyls that we used to sit and listen to it's rare that I can sit down and listen to them because those tones bring back so much pain of his loss. I know he was right here with me watching you rip through that intro, wish he was actually still here to enjoy your music because I know he would love it.

Great video as always Chris. John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett are indelibly imprinted in my brain! Blackpool Tiffany's Mecca Ballroom 26.10.1978. John's shirt was ripped to pieces by the end of the gig. He took a wire coathanger, bent it around his shoulders and cradled his SHURE SM58 in the hook of the hanger, a bit like a harmonica holder. How he didn't take out his front teeth I will never know. Totally bonkers and wonderful night. I was right at the front. It was a Sixth Form dance event. Most of my friends just didnt know what to make of it all. For me it was total brilliance. Alex Harvey was another live artist that just had you enthralled back then. Fun times!

@Chris Buck - I love the comparisons starting at @9:40. I'd say none of the tones were "best", as that's an oxymoron. They're different, allowing different expression, which is what it's all about. Music contains infinite methods for expression of the infinite permutations of our souls during human existence. Beautiful playing as always!

Love the little quote of Peter Green's intro to "Need Your Love So Bad" at around 5:33 after you switched to out of phase in the middle position! Also, those bass string overbends in the first jam were incredible -- such a rich sound, and SO hard to control...kind of like a cross between Otis Rush and Jerry Donahue. Amazing stuff!

Thanks Chris! Wicked playing as always! I bet you could make a mop sound great!🤪 Johnny, as well as Edgar Winter were rad man!!!! I get a firebird in my shop once in a while, actually more of the bases than the guitars. They hold up pretty well, but frets wear, and a well loved instrument is usually a worn one, so I normally get them in for fret wear, setups, and dent and ding removal. John Entwistle was a big influence on so many! There is an early black 6 string original I converted to a Kahler tremolo, Locking nut, and Stainless Steel frets decades ago, I can only imagine it's still floating out there somewhere teasing ears and blowing minds.😁

Chris - this is an excellent video. You absolutely nailed the details on this. I have owned 12+ Firebirds over the years. I currently have two '63s (VII and V, the latter formerly owned by The Hives) and two '64s (a I and a III). They're all wildly different in character. I've played them all live... though probably never again for the VII - it's too valuable (and clean). It's also arguably the best sounding of the brood. I also have a '71 Deluxe that I've owned for 15+ years, and a '54 LP Custom I acquired late last year. (Again, gigged with those a lot and love them, but the '71 is my baby). It was a delight to hear you compare the LPD, LP GT, and the FB III. The ceramic on the LPD is so obvious to my ears - the extra squish in the notes. The AlNiCo on the FB sounds bright and punches. And, well, the PAFs on the GT - what can be said that hasn't already been said? You rock. Subbed.

I remember falling in love with the idea of a tele and then playing one and going "Oh. I don't like it AT ALL. Huh." Granted, I'm a lefty, and I didn't have a lot of options to choose from, but it was something about how far forward the bridge was that just didn't work for me. Funny how we love the look of a guitar but if it doesn't feel right, it just doesn't matter. I would LOVE a Firebird or an Explorer, but I just won't ever find a lefty one, so they'll just live in my head I guess

A Firebird V was my stage guitar in the 90s. They make you play on the edge. The cutting tone, the neck position, and the visual statement don’t allow for a timid approach. In the end I moved on and made the hard decision to sell it because I wanted my playing to change and develop in different directions. I should regret parting with it as it was a great guitar to play and would be worth a lot more now than any other guitar I own, or have owned, but I was right in my instinct.
