Because his mother died giving birth to him and he originally thought she couldn't have been a witch if she'd died. But when he found out that even witches and wizards could die despite being magical he became afraid of death and wanted to become immortal. Part of him probably hated Merope for not living to raise him which is why he considered her weak for dying. So in Voldemort's mind by becoming immortal he'd prevent himself from becoming a weakling like his mother. Dumbledore also said Voldemort considered death a "shameful human weakness" and Voldemort being the egotistical narcissist that he was saw himself as more than human and above and superior to humanity even then so becoming immortal would allow him to physically become more than human in his mind. To him becoming immortal would basically make him a god.

In a twisted way he did achieve immortality. His soul having become so despoiled by the horcruxes that it isn't able to move on into the afterlife, thus he will forever be stuck in limbo never being able to move on and have the sweet embrace of death.

And yeah, Grindelwald and Dumbledore were over 100, Bathilda Bagshot, Grindelwald's great-aunt was killed within a year of Grindelwald so she was very old when she died. Yeah, Voldemort died young relatively speaking. And oh yeah, Dumbledore's brother was still alive at the end of the war; who knows how long he'd live.

How did wizards become ghosts? And why didn't dumbledore or snape or Voldemort become one?
@arinerm13317 жыл бұрын
Sir Nicholas explained this to Harry at the end of The Order of the Phoenix, when Harry sought him out to find a way to speak again with Sirius. Sir Nicholas forced himself to admit two things. First, only wizards and witches can become ghosts as they exist in Hogwarts, and that only those who are too cowardly to finally die can become a ghost. The irony is that this admission shows Sir Nicholas to have more courage than even Snape was credited as having, but that's neither here nor there, just as Sir Nicholas is neither here nor there (his own pun).

I always think about The Blitz. That Tom as a boy was in real danger in Muggle world, where death of other people was around him and he could die at any moment from the bombing.
@Xehanort107 жыл бұрын
The events of World War II might have made him think that all Muggles were evil as well. He already hated them because of his father and because they weren't wizards or witches so that might have added to it. Voldemort thought Tom Sr had left Merope because she was a witch because he didn't like magic and never found out that he'd actually left because he'd been drugged and raped by Merope to conceive Tom Jr the future Voldemort and that in reality he left after Merope stopped giving him the potion convinced that he'd fallen in love with her for real. After Tom Sr found out what she'd done to him, that she'd raped him and that she was now pregnant with their child no wonder he abandoned her then and there. Even though he probably hated them for being Muggles Voldemort's ideas about the Death Eaters killing half bloods, Muggles and Muggle borns were probably inspired by Hitler and the Nazis Aryan philosophy where they killed anyone who wasn't blonde haired or blue eyed.

Ever since he was a child, Tom had a desire to stand out. He didn't want to be like anybody else. He even hated his own name because of how common it was. he would´ve gotten himself killed .seeing how reckless he was trying new spells out. he in best case would be expelled in worst he´d die. remember he several times tried spells he only saw once or even just read about no consequence what so ever. book two: Snape puts lockhard on his arse, Malfoy steals a book fro mharry, harry uses the freshly copied disarming charm. as we saw in the fifth movie this spell due to it´s difficult pronounciation is a dangerous piece of magic. cho chang set her sleeve on fire due to stuttering. let´s see not the books to my knowledge only the second movie, Tom uses a curse meant to deal with spiders. he´s a fifth year student and given he enchanted a diary to literally contain memories (we and harry didn´t know it´s a horcux, but we knew it is a charm beyond school stuff) we now he´s skilled for a fifth year student, harry just copies his curse from seeing it. okay here we can say: we all were idiots with 12. i´d let that slide. in book three he was reasonable and well in book four he didn´t have much choice than to learn more advanced combat magic for the triwizard tournamen.t however it was stated later on he once again tried spells way beyond his level. like the shield charm .fred and george stated many ministry wizards adult wizards were not capable of producing an adequate one. And he shows again, that he is a reckless idiot touching something in albus dumbledores closet. (the pensieve) if it isn´t open for touch it will have a reason. Albus dumbledore is one of the oldest and most powerful wizards alive, arguably THE most powerful, it should be common sense to stay clear from everything dumbledore does not expressively tell you to touch. book five harrys recklessness goes to another level be it out of somewhat necessity. He is a combat magic genius. others are not, and he teaches real combat spells on partners without second thought. that´s reckless again. and then he get´s the cheese against bellatrix. yeah it´s understandable he wanted to see her suffer. but his cruciatus curse did what? tickle her? because he didn´t know about the specifics of the curse. And as if that didn´t happen he blindly tries out spells he reads in snapes old book. he saw the fun and party jinxes like levicorpus. then he tries out a spell that is marked with "against enemies" damn that boy is savage. he damn near cut malfoy in half with that. and the wound could not close without proper magical care. yeah nice idea having that moron play with dark magic. he´d be expelled or dead before his fifth year if he somehow got his hands on some darker literature. he would be dead.

Harry Potter Folklore, I’ve got to say it... you have hit genius with this!!! This is now what I believe about Tom Riddle! His visions making him walk that path makes perfect sense. It’s often said that our greatest strengths are connected to our greatest weaknesses. Had Tom Riddle been influenced differently he could’ve worked with his visions differently, and ultimately had a different future. I personally believe there is still hope for Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort even though he ended up in the shattered limbo state. Rowling’s story is to a large degree about the ultimate power of love. And in a story about the power of Love there has to be room for its power to override even someone’s evil. It might not be an easy process, but I think Love has that power.

It really says something about the character: he figured "tsss, childbirth, that's such a ridiculous way to die, no witch would be weak enough to let that happen to herself. She was obviously a weak little human." He was so incredibly indifferent to anyone else's suffering at that young an age. Yeah, I think that's right; anyone worthy of the sword could be considered Gryffindor's heir. But I could imagine there begin an actual descendant of Godric himself who might be considered THE heir, you know what I mean? At first Tom believed his dad was the wizard and Merope was a Muggle because his dad was still alive while his mother died giving birth to him. So in his mind that meant that his dad was the wizard and therefore immortal because back then Tom Jr believed that being magical meant you couldn't die. But after he didn't find Tom Riddle Sr's name on anything to do with wizardry he realised that his dad was a Muggle and his mother was a pureblood witch and that also caused him to realise that witches and wizards could die and being magical didn't necessarily make you immortal which IMO began his fear of death. Death itself was a threat to his own belief that he was special because when Dumbledore told him he was a wizard Tom felt special and better than everyone else and even back then years before he became Voldemort probably felt invincible and immortal.

Actually, I think that because his mom, who was a wizard, which was the most powerful creature in his opinion (considering his and his followers treatment of other living beings I think this can be derived) was overcome by death. He would either have been afraid of death, or refuse to accept it happening to him (as the heir of slytherin this was NOT going to happen to him), as his pride would not allow it. He may have developed an obsession with avoiding death (the one thing he knew ended his mother, though he may not have been a sentimental person, this weakness seems to disappoint him, and the floating living corpses in the cave dumbledore and harry went in may just have been his experiments that failed -cause it was not creepy enough already, sorry- ) his half existence after the murder of a small baby quite literally backfired could have strengthened him.in his conviction,but also made him somewhat afraid (and thus, nagini became a horcrux as well). though voldemort would never accept that, as we saw in kings cross, he is just a wounded baby on the inside. ..A.. crybaby? its the one thing he would probably not let anyone see him do, or show the weakness. firstly he may have tried to search every way possible, the philosofers stone he could not make (but later tried to steal), and then start questioning others, venturing into the dark arts section (as harry did, its not impossible, clearly, and he may even have been allowed in for "research", we know he was quite a charming speaker) and there finding references, and so he asked slughorn etc. A sociopath with brains and a strong motivation can do much. Now, I wonder a few things myself: where did voldemort get nagini? and would he have been able to bring himself back if not all the horcruxes had been destroyed (without the help of outsiders?) ?

What if the whole Harry Potter series was written with a bias? Me and my friends discussed Potter, and we surmised that given how seemingly powerful wizards were in Fantastic Beasts, to the lackluster magical energy even as most spoke Wingardium Laviosa accurately, that Voldermort had a valid reason for most of his actions. He was trying to restore the magical energy that was clearly waning with the introduction of muggle borns. Voldermort also failed to show any indications of fear, of death, even when he kept Nagini closer.

How would he receive visions in the first place? I think he just feared death in general and this was during WWII so there would be lots of bombings on Britain in that time and that could have struck fear in him.
