I'm so with you on this! Excited to watch the rest of the series, and I bought your book too (so pumped for that). I'm a HUGE advocate of sustainability and it's the KEY component of my coaching services, in both weight loss and fitness (gotta love how you move too or else people wish their workout was over before it even started = high rate of skipping workouts). I stood my ground ever since I entered the fitness industry 20 years ago and refused to promote weight loss supplements, surgeries, fad diets, etc. It means I'm missing a large part of the market, as they want to pay for the "quick fixes", which actually aren't quick fixes, just like you show in this video. I'm excited to learn from you, and share this content, because it aligns with my long-term beliefs. Thank you for your hard work! It's AMAZEBALLS!

This series comes at an opportune time for me. I'm trying to lose again. Lost 40 lbs before. Ended up putting it all back. Eventually added another 10 on top of that and am now trying to lose more. Down 25 lbs, but stalled already and not really sure precisely what to do since I'm already in a pretty calorie reduced state as it is, so this is exactly the kind of stuff I need to hear right about now.

@@tomk3478 well you can keep lowering calories and/or increasing calories burnt. Or you can reverse diet to build your metabolism back up to maintenance and then try to lose again. It just depends on what you're trying to achieve and how quickly. If you have a lot of weight to lose you might need to do multiple reverse diets and cuts to get down without destroying your metabolic rate.
@tomk34786 жыл бұрын
I've been kicking up the calories burnt, but it hasn't really done anything, so I guess I'll give the reverse diet a try. Which will be interesting since I'm struggling to get my calories as it is, but thems the breaks. Thanks.

I like the vid and will be sharing it. I like that these info vids come with much needed/appreciated comedy clips. However, I do think there is a fine line between the clip /adding/ to the message and clips that /take away/, interrupt the flow, and are unnecessary. Often, less is more, and YTers refine this as their vids progress.

thank you for your input, overall people have enjoyed the edits and it helps hold people's attention much better, so this is why they are there. I'd love to do 30 minute educational vids but the numbers don't lie, people don't watch them, which is why other youtubers with terrible content do way better because it's 'entertaining' so I am trying to balance 'entertaining' with 'education'
@ajqueen316 жыл бұрын
I get it and agree. I've seen some really bad content videos have too much editing and it's unbelievably annoying, while others don't have enough to maintain attention. I think you've got the ticket on holding attention for longer videos and I think you'll hit the magic formula soon with balancing the edits with your great content.

A great video and I'm excited about the series! I would like to ask though, how much weight fluctuation is considered yo-yo dieting? For instance, I dropped a little over 50kg a few years back. Currently I have no issues keeping my weight relatively stable and in normal bw range, however my weight does go up and down for about 5kg several times a year. Great video. Very informative. Most of the concepts are familiar. Q for you Layne: I'm not clear from the video how you define dieting? Is it mere restricting calories, at say the 500/day level in order to lose a 1lb/wk? Or are you referring to starving to the point where metabolic damage occurs and trying to refeed into that damaged state?
@nickwilson50926 жыл бұрын
Great video as usual, but can I ask a question? What do you do if you have already done the mass weight loss and yo-yo dieting or are continuing to yo-yo? Can you reset back to a normal TDEE? I appreciate other videos you have done recommend reverse dieting but, say if you lost weight over a long period and I am talking 10+ years, reverse dieting would in theory take 10+ years. This then points back to point 4, sustainability of a diet. Also after loosing so much weight for over a long period mentally, losing becomes the norm. So when you see weight going back on, the yo-yo diet comes out obsessively, one could even say bordering on eating disorder, which as shown in your video, can do more harm than good in the long run. To this day I can find information on how to lose weight all over television, magazines, programs (weight watchers etc) and the internet, but there is no assistance or guides that I could find (I may be wrong) that help people that have lost all the weight, where and what to do next and even how to break the mentality of what prolonged weight loss can do psychologically to an individual. I'd be interested in your thoughts just because you take all these factors scientifically, whether physiological or psychologically. Thanks in Advance

The last part is maybe different for physique competitors who lets say they diet for a show in the fall and then gain maybe 20lbs over there contest weight post show, then they start dieting for a show in the spring they usually drop weight and body fat very fast. I always assumed this was because the fat storage was only there for a shorter period. I've experienced this myself and with many clients. It would be nice if that study was done on humans and not animals.

Ok so when you reverse diet do you still do cardio or no please answer?
@00piper180006 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert but I'd say it would depend on your goal. If you wanted to start bulking after your reverse diet then I would start tapering off the cardio as you start your reverse diet. You basically want to be doing no cardio during a bulk because it'll be counter productive. If you would like to maintain cardiovascular fitness during your bulk or your maintenance phase then I would suggest some high intensity interval training like sprints but you would need extra calories to stay in a surplus if your bulking or so you don't create a deficit if your trying to maintain. Again I'm not an expert but this is the way I'd approach it

@00piper180006 жыл бұрын
@@markgil2449 congratulations on the weight loss👍 yes you can still reverse diet, I would suggest very slowly cutting the cardio out first, maybe start reducing by 5mins each session, for example if you were doing 30mins a day then drop it to 25mins a day for a week and see how your body reacts. you might see your weight increase a little bit but it's normal and will stop as your metabolism adjusts, once it's adjusted or if the your bodyweight doesn't change then drop cardio time by another 5mins, keep doing it until cardio is cut out completely. Once you've cut out your cardio then slowly start putting extra calories in, maybe 50kcal a day extra for the first week and see how your body reacts again. The key is slow and gradual changes giving your metabolism a chance to adjust. just remember that it takes time and putting a little bit of fat on during this process is normal

So as a figure competitor like Holly, we yo-yo diet to a degree. Off season, I try to remain within 5-10kg of my stage weight and do this as a reverse process after competing. I get up to 3000cals a day quite easily and my body is getting better at managing these calories. Yes, I'm concerned for when I stop competing next year, what might happen then? What would you recommend doing to prevent a weight and fat gain?
@biolayne16 жыл бұрын
there is a BIG differences between targeted increases in calories that restore your metabolic rate and restore your muscle mass vs blowing out and adding a ton of unnecessary fat but not restoring your metabolic rate and muscle mass. BIG difference

I was under the impression that the term "diet" means simply foods you are eating and not only some style of eating for losing weight, fat or whatever?? So one diet can look like 10 000 kcal of junk food and other diet can look like chicken breast and broccoli.. So everybody is on diet, because everybody needs to eat not just fitness people lol.. Anyway in my experience I can eat very "clean" whole food diet without any cravings for junk food etc.. as long as I eat adequate amount of calories, macronutrients( enough protein) and most importantly micronutrients( all minerals from macro minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium to micro minerals like copper, zinc, chromium, selenium etc..) The body craves for energy(calories) and building blocks(amino acids and minerals,vitamins) if this is covered. You will not crave chocolate, ice cream, chips and bullshit like this.. When you understand this you can eat forever clean and healthy diet and by in shape 365 days in the year..
