If you can get one for under $30 then they should imo, unless you're a fan of the ritual of it, or you know for sure you want the soft plastic lens at f11 or whatever. Got a good deal on a kyocera finecam sl300r recently (don't get this one lol it and it's contax bretheren are too expensive normally), and it's been taking the place of a film camera for party shots for sure. Normal photos come out better than I thought too.

More than 20 years ago, I bought a digicam and my love of photography came back to life. I had of course grown up with film and I shot a lot of images with film, but I never wanted to spend time developing or printing or learning chemistry and I know that I was not smart enough to really figure out metering and light. (I mean, I could have done it, but my mind is over on the creative side usually.) Also, I love black and white photography, but with film it was basically a $50 proposition for every roll (buying and developing and printing). I was amazed that I had a little device that was giving me solid images that I could look at on a large screen and be happy about. It's wonderful to be able to swap out lenses but for a lot of purposes a good one piece camera with one lens is adequate. I recently bought a bridge camera to add to my DSLR and mirrorless. It's awesome. And I want to round out my collection by getting a good digicam.

I have recently picked back up, one my first digital cameras again which I bought for its compact body. The camera is Panasonic DMC-ZS40S, and I wanted to take it out to experiment shooting it in a concert. Especially since most concerts will not allow you to bring a mirrorless/DSLR unless you are media. This also helped me decide if I "REALLY NEED" to purchase a new compact camera like the Sony RX100 VII. I was shocked with the results I got on the photos I took with the Panasonic DMC-ZS40S. It did have its limitations, but I was able to work around it and just focus on compositions and editing, since its able to export RAW photos at 18.1MP. Great reminder to keep (my) photography simple (for me) to enjoy.

I like what you say about the limitations. I think it's important with any camera or lens or equipment to figure out what the weaknesses are, and then focus on the strengths. I just got a nice Lumix bridge camera and now that I'm aware of things that it's not so great at it (low light, for instance) I am getting great images with it. I absolutely want to get a good digicam now.

I recently purchased an old digicam from 2006 for like $2 and I can't find it anywhere on the internet or the company that made it. Opticon407 made a digicam in 2006 called the slim box cam. I have the cd for the software and drivers and the boxes and manuals. Plus the actual camera. It takes like 3 aaa batteries. There's no screen on the back, let me rephrase, there's a little like watch or calculator screen that shows the mode it's in and what photo number you are on. It's not gonna replace my nikon fm or anything but it's nice

For the most part it's your average shift in the market. During lockdowns 35mm's were the rage. Kids were FOMO'ing because it was trendy. However, with the rising price of film and development, and instant gratification society we live in, the 35mm was inevitably going to phase out. So what's the next best thing that has that nostalgic/vintage feel, that provides instant photographic feedback...DigiCams. If you're a savvy investor, you could have taken advantage of selling 35mm's at it's peak, whilst using the profit to purchase tons of DigiCams for peanuts. Looks like we're heading to the top of the cycle again. What could be the next best thing after digicams? 🤷♂
@damian93034 ай бұрын
The digicams that I really like don’t even have digital viewfinders and instead mimic the design of a film camera almost… I already got point-and-shoots higher than 2MP in count that were used to take our family pictures throughout the years which ofc my parents wouldn’t want what’s already on them to be overwritten, I experimented with phone cameras from past iterations but they remind me more of old social media in the way colors are handled; they look almost like filters.

This is applied philosophy. I understand that the point is to make the act of taking a picture conscious. I guess that having a dedicated object is the first quality of a digicam. The second point is its limitations. Because you can't get a picture as sharp as the one one you have in your mind, you're stuck in the materiality of the support and the picture recovers its quality of being an object itself. Maybe this is true but I feel a bit confused because when I take my phone and choose the camera app, obviously I know what I'm doing. At the end there's one thing I'm sure about. The prices get higher and so digicams get more and more desirable. But I'm not so sure about the why.

Reality check: I wouldnt say the quality/look of the photo itself is nearly as close to being synonymous to 35mm film. It's really just the lo-fi pixelation kind of appreciation. They read/capture light differently and still can require some minor fine tuning post processing. In my experience, I would say its synonymous to [point and shoots] because it gives you that ability to immediately take a photo with the trust it'll capture the light (and focus) effectively. The best digi cams are the ones that you can shut off the display or rotate the screen like Canon Powershot G series because then you won't be pixel peeping and effectively treating it more like film. The screen resolution was so poor back then too so even if you pixel peep, what you see is far from what the actual uploaded file looks like. You still run the risk of taking an excessive number of photos unless it's a small enough storage card. The fact is, it allows us to capture photos... just differently.
