You think it had nothing to do with any of those reasons, but the cat knows why. Example: If feed the cat at the same time everyday and the right portion. No more, no less. The cat knows how much food you give her. Therefore she thinks it won't be enough for everybody, so she eats the litter. It might not be your case, but animals take notice of things we normally don't.

Hamsters only produce milk while rearing and milking them will reduce the food of their offspring. Hamsters like most rodents they have birth rate extremely high so is their death rate.

I have seen a stray dog mom eating all her puppies, yes all of them, and none of them were deformed or anything. She just ate all her children one by one. First there were like 7-8 puppies, then after a few days we noticed two of them were missing. Then after a few more days, another two or three gone. We then saw the mom eating a leg. Weirdly enough, the surviving puppies had joined her too, until they were the treat of course. So she ate all of them.
