Anime is known for many tropes but probably the most known is how unique eyes are stylized in anime. Why do anime eyes look this way? When did this style of eyes start appearing? Here at Get in the Robot we have to ask... Why? Anime.

Since you brought it up, "Why, anime? Moe." I mean, MAYBE you can explain the genre without coming off as condescending and judgmental, but I wouldn't be able to. What about "Why, anime? WWII" there's some pretty hardcore depressing anime depicting the events, then others that go a completely nonsense route where countries are cute boys or something, then there was this one I hate watched on Netflix a couple of years ago where the writers blamed the atrocities committed in Korea/Mongolia/China on some group with magic powers mind controlling Japanese military/officials and another group with magic powers had to stop the first evil group. Fuck I hated that show. Japan goes to weird places when they set a story in the mid 30s to the 50s.

This video misses one important reason why anime eyes are massive, which is that it's a trait common in babies, something we're genetically programmed to view as cute. This applies to many other common anime treats as well, such as big heads, high pitched voices, small noses, etc. And it's not just in anime, if you look at cats and dogs you'll find that we've bred them to also have these traits, because we want our pets to be cute. This is also why the cool characters in anime often have smaller eyes and deeper voices, because they're not supposed to be cute. The character eye style often even changes from scene to scene to reflect their mood, like how the iris may contract and sometimes lose its color when a character gets angry, or how the pupil contracts when characters go insane (changes in pupil size are common when taking drugs).

Right, because as you age, your skull and eyebrow ridges grow, yet eyes stay the same size. The big eyes to head ratio is genetically programmed into humans as youthful and desirable.

There are multiple reasons for that depending on the show. For example it could be to make it less time consuming to draw and also easier to draw. Another reason is that it makes the characters less like humans and so you can justify them being handled less like a human or them doing things humans won't do. Imagine a Road Runner sketch with fully realistic graphics. It would be very weird and unfriendly, compared to the look we know. 4 fingers is part of this look. (Although Coyote's 4 fingers can also be attributed to other reasons, such as that coyote paws only have 4 visible toes).

The vast majority of cartoons have larger than normal eyes. Like the video said, it makes it easier to express emotion or feelings. It's not quite unique to Japan, though Japanese's examples are often times more extreme than other places. Regardless, it still exists anywhere there's animation.

Actually, Japanese anime historically is a cheaper imitation of American animation, in technology and technique. If you want to look into the history of artistic history of "Big Eyes" and how they're drawn, I would suggest you look at Bambi, the animation character that set the standard of Animation (and later Anime). The American Occupation brought many things to Japan, including Christmas, Valentine's Day, Baseball, etc - things that were once banned by by the Japanese Emperor (worshiped as a god in Imperial Japan). So it was with Animation. When the American Occupation decided to OK screening of Bambi to the film was shown to the general Japanese populace as well as soldiers and American populace in Japan. It is hard to convey what a watershed this was - just as it is hard to convey to later generations the watershed moment of a picture of General Macarthur over what the Japanese populace always assumed was a "god" of their religion. You're a Japanese kid in Imperial Japan. Take a look at Japanese animation of the period in the 1930s and during the War, the animation that the average Japanese kid and most adults would see through their lifetime. Yes, SOME American animation like Snow White might be seen by the aristocracy, but for the general populace, Imperial Japan keeps them from being exposed to what it considers American "propaganda", especially in the late 1930s and World War 2. Then the Japanese propaganda about the superior Yamato Master Race infused with Shinto and Bushido (Yamato Damashai), Flying Geese formation, Greater Asian Co-prosperity Sphere, etc, etc, etc. The Japanese think they're the best in the world. But their world ends. They're defeated, conquered, and occupied. And then are shown Bambi (vintage 1942) by their conquerors. The animation technology, the quality, the style, the storytelling, etc is like NOTHING they've EVER seen before. To Americans, it's wonderful, but hardly earth-shattering. American kids and adults have been watching Looney Tunes, Warner Bros and DIsney for a long time kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmPXmJWkmLSig80 But to Japanese? In some ways, it might be soul-crushing, and it others it might be exhilarating. Bambi quickly becomes VERY popular to the Japanese. Exposed to the artistic styles of their conquerors, the Japanese populace inevitably followed the trend of the popular film, including the artistic style of Bambi and his cutesy "Big Eyes", palettes and color which were seamless without drawn lines, frame rate so high that stutter was imperceptible to the human eye, etc, etc, etc. Nascent Japanese animators and studios quickly followed suit to exploit this demand, imitating this now iconic Disney character and its style, a style that became emblematic of Japanese culture, like so many other things that were born in arguably the greatest cultural changes/reformation in Japanese history. That is how modern Japanese anime was born. It may not be the Truth the Japanese (and certain kinds of Americans) want, but it is the Truth they deserved.

@@Terrekain The Japanese were exposed to animation before world war two (about 1907) in fact animation was used as a propaganda tool by the Japanese empire kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5S5pmCXmK2fprc Sooo... its a bit problematic. It was just an exchange of ideas that took shape in its own way. Not the intelligent Americans showing up the ignorant Japanese. Not to say Disney didn't have a large impact on Japanese anime. Any way, right now I would say that Japanese anime is the superior medium it has more diverse genres and stories to tell while American animation is either a comedy show, a children show or a big blockbuster 3d animated movies aimed at children, not to say there aren't good animated american properties.

@Terrekain
@Terrekain 5 жыл бұрын
@@princessthyemis "And, kind of ironic because now Japan's anime art is 1000000 % better than computer animated movies the US makes nowadays....." [facepalm] You do realize that virtually ALL anime today from the Japanese industry is made using digital painting/inking and software tools that were developed in the US right? I think the first Japanese anime to utilize Disney's digital rendering tech (which was developed a decade before) was Ghost in the Shell, after Disney had already used it for years in its renaissance period beginning in the mid-80s for some of its most breath-taking effects from Black Cauldron's litho-film APT cells and digital imagery to Beauty and the Beast's flying camera view in the castle ballroom. You want to know when anime started to look "%1000000 better"? The credit goes not to the Japanese, but to Americans like David Spencer. To this day, all the software and techniques Japanese studios use from Ghibli to Sunrise are either clones or licensed from companies held by Disney to Adobe. Americans don't do 2D anymore ever since Treasure Planet's "failure" due to a number of factors, costs being one of them. But ultimately, Japanese studios will continue following the industry standards in America - it's always been this way. Japanese studios have always been about 10 years behind their American counterparts, due simply to the nature of waiting for someone else to innovate the technology, watching it "mature" in the market place, before the Japanese think it's "safe" to "adapt". That's the Japanese business model; always has been: they wait for other people to take the real big risks, then reap low-risk (and often still-lucrative) rewards.

I know a lot of Westerners who aren't into anime immediately have a vision of it in mind that focuses primarily on the large eyes, and see it as a mark of being from a different culture. To me, though, that seems really strange, because Western animation has a long history of exaggerated eyes too. To me, it's really no different than a studio like Disney or Warner Bros. changing the size and shape of the eyes; the eyes those studios draw on their characters typically aren't realistically proportioned either. It's not purely a Japanese thing-- it's an animation thing. As the saying goes, the eyes are the windows to the soul, which means they're absolutely one of the most important aspects of any character design, and they have to be able to convey emotion well. And since one of the fundamental principles of animation is exaggeration... naturally, that includes the eyes. From a technical standpoint, animation is a really labor-intensive process, and if animators can find good shortcuts and workarounds with character design to make their jobs a little simpler without diminishing the quality of their finished product, they'll tend to gravitate toward those things. In early Western animation, characters tended to wear white gloves to make their hand gestures easier to distinguish, and many characters were drawn with only four fingers on each hand to make animating a little simpler. These are stylistic choices that have had lasting effects on animation in the West; The Simpsons springs to mind as a more recent example of characters with four-fingered hands. Large, expressive eyes are simply one more design choice that makes the animator's job a bit easier-- as mentioned in this video, they're much easier for viewers to read, so from the animator's standpoint, they're far more efficient at successfully communicating expressions.
@dynamicworlds1
@dynamicworlds1 5 жыл бұрын
Yup! The things on the head people pay attention to: hair (for recognizing a person at a glance/distance), eyes, and mouth are emphasized to help viewers read emotions (even subtle emotions) on a less detailed face than a real life one. Humans can distinguish emotions in photos of _just_ eyes to a surprising level of accuracy, so it makes sense to enlarge the features we look at for social cues in the same way that squash and stretch are used to go off model in animation to help depict motion. Japanese animation just took the principles of this used in western animation and refined it. Moving from circles/ovals to shapes and show/imply a points to the eyes (the nuances in placement of which are a lot of what our brain looks for to judge emotion) is simply an improvement that makes the same big-eyed style more expressive. Other changes (like the eyes loosing their luster when someone stops showing emotional reactions to their environment for whatever reason) further expand the range. To top it off, the eye size isn't as much innocent=big vs cruel=small, but rather a representation of how easy a person's emotions are to read. A child or other innocent person has emotions tend to be right on the surface, so they get big, expressive eyes, whereas someone who is more cold/guarded (either due to a cruel nature or having seen some shit) gets smaller, harder to read eyes. If we want to get into cultural, Japan having a culture where real emotions are often supposed to not ne expressed would of course be putting even more emphasis on developing that aspect of stylistic art.

+扇子夜迷(Nightfans) Anime has a tendency to colourcode its characters through hair and eyes. Western animation usually has an entirely unique, sometimes anatomycally incorrect frame for each character. The shape of the head is similarly varied. eyes might or might not be exeggerated, but they are definitely less of a focus.

You could look at older japanese artforms too. Like in kabuki, a lot of things are exaggerated for emphasis. Kabuki basically invented comically huge anime swords lol.

1:28 I WAS ENJOYING THIS VIDEO UNTIL YOU PRONOUNCED "Ciel" AS "seal". IT IS LITERALLY "SEE-el" As a person whose gamertag has been Ciel for 5 years, it triggers me when people say "seal". Had one dude even call me Kevin. Like what the hell.

Do you think this is the reason why there is lip syncing in American animation while in anime, it does not. Since Americans focuses more on the mouth than the eyes, if the mouth looks odd, it is very noticeable.

Because , it could be pretty boring if we put normal eyes in anime , but when we put color on the anime eyes it looks wonderful and I think it's the creative way animators make anime an energetic face .
