To start, the term cardiovascular disease actually includes a bunch of different diseases, and there are many factors that go into what causes each kind. And the structure we need to learn to understand these diseases isn’t necessarily the heart, but rather the arteries.
Arteries are complex, ever changing organs that deliver blood throughout the body and play a role not just in disease, but in experiencing different climates, exercising, and maintaining homeostasis.
When you take a big picture look at the entire cardiovascular system, you will see two distinct loops of blood vessel networks, shaped like a figure eight. One of the loops carries deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs, picks up some oxygen, and circles back to the heart.
This pulmonary circulation is where important gas exchange happens, allowing us to utilize all the carbon dioxide waste we’ve built up in our blood and capture that oxygen we breathe in.
Once our blood is nice and oxygenated it comes back to the left side of the heart to be pumped into systemic circulation, the second loop that hits everything that isn’t the lungs.
Right after getting ejected from the left side of the heart, blood then passes through the aorta, which is the biggest artery the human body has.
The aorta branches off into smaller arteries up into the neck and brain and down the body into the limbs and abdomen. As the arteries get closer to individual tissues and organs, they’ll branch off into tiny arterioles, and then into microscopic blood vessels called capillaries.
Some of those capillaries are so tiny that red blood cells have to line up cell by cell to get through.
But, no surprise, not all of our arteries are built the same.
Find out more about your different arteries, the purposes they serve, and how they all come up again and again when it comes to understanding cardiovascular disease in this episode of Human.

Nanoparticle helps eat away deadly arterial plaque
newatlas.com/medical/nanopart...
“Atherosclerotic plaque-deposits on the inner walls of arteries are a frequent cause of heart attacks and strokes. A newly-developed nanoparticle could help minimize those deposits, as it prompts the body's own cells to "eat" them.”
Mystery of why arteries harden may have been solved, say scientists
www.theguardian.com/science/2...
“The mysterious mechanism behind the hardening of arteries may have been solved, researchers have revealed, in a study that also suggests the first potential preventive drug for the condition linked to heart attack, dementia and stroke. Arteries harden as calcium becomes deposited in the elastic walls of the vessels, a process that happens as we age and is exacerbated for patients with diabetes or kidney disease.”

6:55 "but no matter what causes the dysfunction"... well, that's exactly why we're watching this video, it was posed as the question 'Why Do Arteries Get Clogged?' it feels like they said 'smoking, high blood pressure and diabetes' causes clogs in one sentence and there's less nitric oxide with smoking, but they should go further in explaining how high blood pressure and diabetes (are there more causes?) are answers to the original question

I have clogged arteries in my legs. The doctor gave me two choices: stents or walking. He sent me to therapy where they had me walk 1 mile a week. I was already walking 2.5 to 5 miles a day! It's finally paying off. The body is designed to move, don't wait for all the things that can happen with a sedentary life, get out and move your body daily. A little is better than nothing.

@@VudrokWolf This is coming from a diehard vegan, and so I would love to say that you're 100% right; but you're probably only partially right. Genetics plays a really large risk factor. For some of these, it is possible to mitigate some of the worst effects with a good diet (most plant based diets ftw; according to cardiologists), but those with inherited diseases like Familial hypercholesterolemia et al will need to seek medical help. It's unfair and depressing but even educated health nuts who exercised their whole lives, eat the healthiest plant based diets can still have terrible cholesterol if they happened to lose the genetic lottery.
@skyrask1948
@skyrask1948 4 жыл бұрын
@@spastikman Having high cholesterol is not inherently bad since cholesterol i not really a factor in formation of cardiovascular disease. This is copied reply to another comment so it is not exactly what would be appropriate reply to you comment, but it is better than nothing. It is excess of triglycerides that body has no way to store in fat storage. This is caused by diet with high fat and carbs intake at same time and regular fat storage already filled. Contrary to popular belief there is only minor correlation of LDL ("bad" cholesterol) to this. High levels of LDL and HDL("good" cholesterol) with low levels of triglycerides is shown to have lowest rate of non inherited cardiovascular diseases. LDL as primary carrier of triglycerides is heightened when high amounts of triglycerides need to be transported around body. To prevent build up of fat from happening many different strategies can be formed. Eliminating/reducing either fat or carbs is one way. Low body fat by either caloric restriction or a lot of exercise is another. Low body fat is not necessary enough since amount of body fat person can safe store is widely different on person basis. Best strategy is to reduce carbs intake and rely more on fat intake (especially when young since older person gets harder it is to metabolize fat) and have physically active life stile with low body fat content. No specific percentage is meant by low, since it varies so significantly between people.
@tomerwolberg37
@tomerwolberg37 4 жыл бұрын
First of all this is wrong to say it's by far the leading cause, lack of physical activity (cardio not weight lifting) is the leading cause because doing cardio regularly lower your chances to cardiovascular diseases the most. Also they did addressed diet, they said that diabetes can cause it, and the leading cause for that is being fat (and you get fat by eating too much, so it is about diet).

Acute care telemetry/stroke nurse here *_waves enthusiastically_* Thanks for the video! Education is an indispensable part of healthcare. For that reason, I wanted to suggest a minor correction: The definition you gave for ARTERIOsclerosis actually describes ATHEROsclerosis, a more specific ailment and a term more people should be familiar with. The names may look very similar at first glance, however they do refer to different problems within the arterial wall. Arteriosclerosis is a more general term that refers to a hardening, thickening, or general "noncompliance" of the artery. This can in fact occur from atherosclerosis, which as you described is the accumulation of cholesterols, blood products & cells within the vessel wall. But arteriosclerosis is a more general term which can be caused by more factors than just cholesterol accumulation. So while they can both lead to potentially lethal blockages, atherosclerosis has a more specific cause that can help health care providers and patients narrow in on successful interventions. Thanks again!

Endothelial dysfunction is a result of changes in endothelial function.[18][19] After fat (lipid) accumulation and when stimulated by inflammation, endothelial cells become activated, which is characterized by the expression of molecules such as E-selectin, VCAM-1 and ICAM-1, which stimulate the adhesion of immune cells.[20] Additionally, transcription factors, which are substances which act to increase the production of proteins within cells, become activated; specifically AP-1 and NF-κB, leading to increased expression of cytokines such as IL-1, TNFα and IFNγ, which promotes inflammation.[21][22] This state of endothelial cells promotes accumulation of lipids and lipoproteins in the intima, leading to atherosclerosis, and the subsequent recruitment of white blood cells and platelets, as well as proliferation of smooth muscle cells, leading to the formation of a fatty streak. The lesions formed in the intima, and persistent inflammation lead to desquamation of endothelium, which disrupts the endothelial barrier, leading to injury and consequent dysfunction.[23] In contrast, inflammatory stimuli also activate NF-κB-induced expression of the deubiquitinase A20 (TNFAIP3), which has been shown to intrinsically repair the endothelial barrier.[24] en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endothelium There we have it. Inflammation. The cholesterol is innocent. It gets clogged up there by Inflammation. What causes that inflammation? Smoking, lazyness. Yeah. But more so plant toxins and carb/sugar addiction.

Great video for our homeschool health class! Also, excessive sugar & starch cause inflammation in the cardiovascular system that causes the body to react to the damage protectively with plaquing, like an internal scab. One way exercise reduces plaquing is by using up the excessive sugar/starch in the blood & body to reduce chronic high blood sugar. Beware... the USDA Food Pyramid recommends a toxic level of starch/sugar from grains, potatoes, corn, beans, fruit, juice, dairy, concentrated sugars, and highly processed seed oils are also highly inflammatory. The low fat forces high sugar Food Pyramid was designed to feed the masses for lower cost not best health longest life. Carbs are more profitable & taxable jobs too than a low carb natural fats economy. A mostly carbs diet is a mostly inflammatory diet.... increases vulnerability to cytokine storm death from a virus, you know which one I'm talking about. Chronic Carb OD causes the chronic inflammation that causes heart attacks, not natural fats.

That's 70 years of data confirming each other. Yes, sometimes a study (usually observational) will pop up with vague conclusions like "Intake of butter and cheese is associated with a 2-year extension in lifespan", but those studies fail to mention that the subject population all live in Beverly Hills or something. And also don't mention they live shorter lives compared to the low-fat consumers of Beverly Hills. Look at interventional studies. We put people on saturated fat and watch their cholesterol go up and atherosclerosis begin. Then we take them off it and it goes down. Then we put them back on and it goes back up. Or look what happens to people with atherosclerosis who have had several cardiac events - take them off the fat and watch their heart disease reverse(!) I suggest reading the actual studies and not the Times magazine articles.

a lot of people commenting the same thing I'm thinking: I don't feel you really answered the question; even though I did learn a lot about the cardiovascular system, the only thing you really said about clogged arteries is that (6:52) something (maybe lack of nitric oxide due to smoking) causes the endothelial cells that line the arteries to malfunction, which allows lipids in the blood to build up and create a blockage and start a chain reaction that could lead to a stroke or heart attack. two possible takeways from this video: it's fine to eat lots of butter as long as you exercise a lot; also, smoking increases your chances of having a stroke or heart attack.

Athletes that suffer heart attacks usually suffer them because of an imbalance of electrolytes caused by either dehydration or from over hydration. Over hydration is usually more of a problem than dehydration for athletes. It can lead to a condition called hyponatremia which is a fancy way of saying low salt levels. Hyponatremia can kill a healthy person very easily. It occurs in 10% of people participating in endurance athletic events. So drink your pickle juice.

I was hoping you would bring to light the great lymphatic system which is four times more voluminous than the blood system, and also swathes every cell in the body including the blood and related organs and arteries, etcetera. Once the great lymphatic system experiences congestion - mostly due to an overwhelm of acid ash forming foods - things get "gluey". The solution is to allow the body to go into autophagy, induced by fasting. That is when the "oil" gets changed and child like fluidity is restored.

Well this video said very little about the actual root causes of this desease. Although the very specific causes have been up for debate for decades the scientific literature is very clear, that diet is one of if not the biggest factor in this desease and should not be ignored. Saturated fat is highly correlated with an increase in LDL cholesterol which in turn is highly correlated with the gradual clogging of the arteries. For example the endothelium can be impaired by a diet high in saturated fat and if I am correctly remembering also sugar and probably some other substances that are ingested in or with food. A diet low in saturated fat, cholesterol and isolated sugars consisting of mostly whole plant foods has been shown over and over again to dramatically reduce not only the risk for heart desease but also lowers many other risk factors associated with the development of heart desease like chronic inflammation, diabetes and obesity. Lack of Exercise and smoking are very important not only for heart desease but they do not seem to be the main reason for plaque to build up in the arteries. The areas in the world where people have the lowest heart desease rates share the common trait of a diet consisting of almost no processed food, no refined grains and sugars and very little saturated fat from animal products.
@Kjuken69

Is saturated fat highly correlated with high LDL? And do this clogg the artreries? I think you better look more into this!
@cainen6355
@cainen6355 Жыл бұрын
@@Kjuken69 The effect of dietary saturated fat on humans is very well documented. Many studies could show decreases in blood LDL cholesterol for each x% of saturated fat, when the fat was replaced with poly or mono unsaturated fats, or whole unrefined sources of carbohydrates. Refined carbohydrates consistently seem to have a similarly negative effect on LDL to that of saturated fat which is observed in those studies, that do not note a significant LDL lowering effect when replacing saturated fat with refined carbohydrates. I think I've even seen some studies that could produce significant LDL decreases, then increases and then again decreases in the same cohort by merely decreasing saturated fat intake. As for the question wether LDL levels lead to cardiovascular disease, many of the studies that show the LDL increase determined CVD risk as well and to my knowledge showed very consistently that when the sources of saturated fat (mostly animal derived products, but also coconut oil, palm oil, etc..) were replaced with unsaturated fat sources, which will mostly be whole plant foods, like nuts, seeds, and vegetables, then the CVD risk will go down with the LDL. There is a debate about wether LDL itself causes CVD but the same foods that increase LDL levels are also, independantly correlated with a higher risk of CVD. Foods low in saturated fat as well as refined carbohydrates mirror that effect consistently by being observed to lower the risk of CVD.

Coming from a family with 2 cardiologists, I’m finding this series really interesting and well done 👍 Of course doctors are used to patients wanting them to tell them the ultimate secret to keep them alive for 200 years. Not possible. No miraculous single generic solution. Yet. Catch the details in the series, make an effort to comply according to healthy habits, try to live in non polluted areas, exercise frequently, eat healthy non processed food, don’t smoke, etc. The basics. Don’t jump into trends. It usually is expensive in all aspects. Keep it simple. Listen to your doctor. Ask for a second opinion. Doctors only! Be smart! F1 races aren’t won with sorcery, planes don’t fly because crooks like mediums say so. It’s science. Science supports it all. And it’s hard. Be smart! Scientific studies from credible sources are what we have of most value to drive us into maintaining good health. The heart ❤️ is amazingly complex. Science keeps learning. Lot’s of factors contribute to our health but don’t forget we are all different (each born with a unique fingerprint). Your DNA 🧬 is unique so the timer started when you were born.
