As an old soldier i say :This whistle is because of rubbing the mortar shell against the air. All missiles, bullets, mortars have this whistle. The bigger calibre the louder sounds. I've heard this whistle more than thousands times in the war between iran and iraq in 1980s. Even you can guess the shell calibre according to its whistle.

Or the sound it makes some people describe the mig-15s cannons as the 23mm making a popping sounds and the 37mm cannon making a thumping sound mostly described by Korean war veterans who were in the Air Force and some Vietnam veterans when they faced mig-17s

One of the reasons that the stuka jericho sirens were removed. The bomb whistles were cheap, didn't make sounds the entire trip, and didnt produce drag, unlike the sirens, but had the same psychological effect. The sirens also made it easier for AA to locate and identify incoming aircraft
@blkft

The Luftwaffe used sirens or whistles on their dive bombers.. Doing that was for several reasons: psychological impact, using that sound to time their speed, and as a moral booster.

I'm picturing what it must have been like to hear that as you were just a bit ago going about your day. Suddenly I'm the distance, the sound of hundreds of planes, which grows louder as it approaches.. Then suddenly that whistling sounds just getting louder and louder until a massive boom.. Talk about terrifying

Doppler effect-the pitch gets lower to the pilot because the bombs are speeding up as they fall away from the plane. For the same reason the pitch rises as the bomb speeds up towed the ground.

They were called Jericho Trumpets. The JU-87 (Stuka) dive bomber had them attached to the landing gear struts for the same reason. Pilots hated 'em. Too loud.

Considering the aircraft would be moving away from the point of release I doubt that any of the crew, especially the pilot(s) would hear anything. The aircraft would be moving away very fast, leaving any sound far behind them.
