Bees make honey as a way to store food for themselves and their colony. Honey is a source of energy and nutrients that bees need to survive during the winter months when there are no flowers from which to collect nectar. Bees collect nectar from flowers and convert it into honey by regurgitating and evaporating it in the hive. The honey is then stored in the hive as a food source for the bees to consume during times when food is scarce. Honey also serves as a source of food for the bee larvae and helps to sustain the colony.
Do bees eat their own honey?
Yes, bees do eat their own honey. They store honey in the hive as a food source for themselves during the winter months when there are no flowers from which to collect nectar.
Why do bees make honey if they don't eat it?
Bees make honey as a way to store food for the winter months when there are no flowers from which to collect nectar. They also use honey to feed their young and to sustain themselves during times when food is scarce.
Why do bees have to make honey?
Bees make honey as a way to store food for themselves and their colony. Honey is a source of energy and nutrients that bees need to survive during the winter months when there are no flowers from which to collect nectar.
Can we make honey without bees?
No, honey is a product of the honey bee. While there are other insects that produce similar substances, such as wasps and hornets, they do not produce honey in the same way that honey bees do.
What are 5 interesting facts about bees?
Bees are the only insect that produces food that humans eat.
Bees can recognize human faces.
Bees can fly up to 15 miles per hour.
Bees have five eyes.
Bees perform a dance called the waggle dance to communicate with other bees about the location of food sources.
What is a fun fact about honey?
Honey never spoils. Archaeologists have found pots of honey in ancient Egyptian tombs that are still edible after thousands of years.
Are bees hurt when making honey?
Bees may be injured or killed during the honey-making process, particularly if they come into contact with pesticides or other harmful chemicals. However, beekeepers typically take measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their bees.
Can you eat honeycomb?
Yes, honeycomb is edible and is often eaten along with honey. It has a slightly waxy texture and a sweet, honey-like flavor.
Do bees eat anything other than honey?
Yes, bees also feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. Nectar is the raw material that bees use to make honey, while pollen is a source of protein and other nutrients.
How long do honey bees live?
The lifespan of a honey bee varies depending on its role in the colony. Worker bees typically live for a few weeks to a few months, while queen bees can live for several years.
Do bees sleep at night?
Yes, bees do sleep at night. They typically rest inside the hive, clustering together for warmth and to protect the queen.
Can vegans eat honey?
This is a contentious issue within the vegan community. Some vegans avoid honey because they view it as an animal product, while others argue that bees are not harmed in the honey-making process and that honey is a sustainable and ethical food source.
Does honey expire?
Honey has a very long shelf life and does not expire in the same way that other foods do. However, over time, honey may crystallize or lose some of its flavor and aroma.
What happens when a queen bee dies?
When a queen bee dies, the worker bees in the colony will create a new queen by selecting a young larva and feeding it a special diet of royal jelly.
Do bees live for 3 days?
No, bees typically live for several weeks to several months, depending on their role in the colony. Worker bees, which are the bees responsible for collecting nectar and pollen, usually live for a few weeks to a few months.

Okay, as a beekeeper I can tell you bees do NOT use honey to seal cracks and crevices in the hive! They make a glue-like substance called propolis, which is made out of tree resin. If they tried to use honey to fill cracks the hive would be a sticky mess! 😂 Also, beekeepers have to make sure they do not take too much honey, or else their bees won't make it through the winter. Beekeepers are very careful not to take too much, but what they do harvest is always extra honey and does not harm the colony one bit. Don't listen to this misinformation and enjoy your honey! 🐝🍯😊

It would be a shame if the honey produced by bees is excessive but not utilized. Bees are designed as worker bees that produce honey throughout their lives so if not used or left, the honey will be wasted and become food for other animals as well. And the bee's lifespan is also not long to be able to spend all the honey. That's how the wheel of life works.

A strong hive can produce 100+ pounds of honey on a good year. Bees only need about 20ish pounds of honey to make it through winter. So, yes, they make far more than they need for winter, and there’s plenty to share.
