Why do Black people use the n-word?

Man, as a black guy I have always wondered. How in the HELL did we go from being called Nword by racist. To calling each other the Nword for fun and then still getting mad when someone says the Nword. I do it sometimes out of habit of hearing every one around me always saying it but in real honestly. We shouldn’t be saying this ridiculous word. Especially when you get mad at another race for saying it. You’re just using the Nword as it was intended. To divide. I wish we could agree to stop saying it as a whole but it will never happen. Talk about brainwashed.

Bro I'm Mexican and grew up around black friends and they always called me a "nigga" . I never took offense to it because it was welcoming to me (just my opinion) . It's just a word, I had another friend who is black as well who said to never use that word because it makes you look ignorant . My thing is , if referring to yourself as a "nigga" or saying "nigga" makes you look ignorant and not using the word at all but being offended when another person uses it wouldn't both concepts make you look ignorant because they both lead to division both internal and external . Also most not all blacks state that non blacks have no say in the matter because they ain't black . If a black person states that a non black person has no say in how or why a word (in English BTW) should be meant then once again this is division that is being caused by perception alone. If you're offended over a word but don't deny the fact that using the word is in essence to the existence of black American culture not because of the history of the word and degradation behind it as an insult but because what the word has evolved to now and so familiarized to the point that even non blacks use the word. Pick and choose a side neither is pretty one is the death of black American culture because unfortunately and fortunately that word is a major factor in the foundation of black culture whether you like it or not.

People have different opinions on how they feel about the N word, but I don’t think that it’s “just a word”. If it was just a word then it wouldn’t be a big problem as it is today. That word has history and a disgusting meaning so why even use it? Some think that certain races shouldn’t use it, some think that it’s racism/self hate, and some think that’s it’s just a word. Either call out everyone who uses it, regardless of the skin colour and I mean all the rappers, movie stars, people on social media etc or stop complaining about it. I think that the black people who have actually been discriminated against on the basis of race, in their lifetime, should be allowed to say it. I think that if a group using it and reclaiming it with a new meaning then everyone can do the same, especially in pop culture if the song have that lyric and some one sings it, its not a big deal. But if you keep using it and preventing others from saying it because of the colour of their skin (because nowadays their is no slavery in America. That allows you to develop a favored and habitual English vocabulary according to etiquette and blacklist certain words from that vocabulary. The times in which I usually catch foreigners who didn't have English as their first language saying the n-word or using any foul language in general is when they are trying to mimic what they've heard others say in English without fully comprehending it. An example is a Japanese person trying to sing along to Jay Z in a Karaoke box. It defies their comprehension that the song could contain words this offensive while simultaneously being featured so widely and in ways that children can hear. If they understood how offensive these songs were, not only would they avoid singing along with them but also likely seek them to be censored or come with warning labels about the lyrics. One of the reasons it can be difficult to consciously correct long after the fact though is that our choice of vocabulary in everyday speech and especially when singing along isn't necessarily something we stop and think about so consciously with respect to every individual word choice. It tends to be more habitual and subconscious. People who don't use foul language whether it's the f-word or n-word often had parents that corrected and rehabilitated their children from using that language early on before it became a habit. It's like if someone commonly mispronounces a word and no one corrected them for years, it can be difficult for them to avoid mispronouncing the word the same way in the future even if they've consciously registered that they're mispronouncing it. They might continue to mispronounce it here and there for a while, having to catch themselves and correct themselves repeatedly until they overcome the habit of mispronouncing the word. This usually isn't something that happens overnight, and especially if the language is not the speaker's native language.

Even as a native English speaker, it might be easy to accidentally misgender someone by calling a person who resembles a woman a "she" even though "xer" desired pronoun is "xe". Well, it might be a stretch to a native English speaker since there aren't popular songs that reach the top charts, for example, that contain such derogatory lyrics in other languages. You have to try to imagine what would happen if that were the case though, hypothetically, like imagine if the biggest hit song in the US charts and played very publicly on the radio, on MTV, in popular films and games, was a K-Pop song that contained Korean lyrics that are considered extremely offensive if uttered by anyone who isn't Korean. For example, suppose "oppan gangnam style" was hypothetically very offensive if uttered by anyone who isn't Korean or from Seoul (refers to Gangnam district). We would still likely find our share of Americans singing along to the song without understanding that. Once they do, it might still be difficult for them to stop singing that tune when they're alone or with friends who love the same song.

That was a bad answer and doesn't answer the question at all. The n-word was a derogatory slur used by whites back then (and still to an extend this day) for blacks. The blacks found a way to twist the word around, replace it with a different word but similar sounding, and make it cool, hip and okay for their group. As if to show the whites they aren't afraid of the n-word anymore, cause they are using it to express solidarity or affection against themselves. That is my guess anyway. This was a drunk thought of mine: “Why do so many black people use the N-word, knowing the word’s history and the disgraceful, dehumanizing meaning behind it?” I looked up this question on google, and found myself to this video. I haven’t even watched it yet, but I came to look at how the people would react to it. To my surprise, I mostly just found other people who had the same question I did. I have two black, or at least minorty, friends. One is a lightskin American, the other Latino, and I have never heard them say this word ever, even to each other. In fact, many of the black people I talked to in high school didn’t say this word. I’ve maybe heard it once or twice as far as I can remember. So when I see so many popular black athletes, entertainers, etc use the word regularly like it’s nothing, it’s just very odd to me. So I had a situation the other day that I'd like to get some opinions on.....I am a white guy and two black guys(coworkers and friends) sitting in front of me,talking back and forth. Every 2 words or so was the N word. I asked them if they could stop. One,because we were in an office setting and one of the guys almost caused a fight when he used the word while talking to a different black guy a couple months back because it's use bothered him. Two, because another co worker who happens to be black had told me last week that he won't work with one of these guys again because of his use of the word. Aside from this, various people have called our office saying these two guys were using the word often while doing work for them, and it offended them. So when I ask them to stop and remind them where we are, the both got hot and said I can't be offended by them using the word because i am white. I'm offended by them using that word because two of my close friends and people I respect and care a lot about were offended by it. Was I wrong?

This is a really bad argument. I've heard it before and its flaw is that it is based around the other situation you use for comparison being in the context of an insult. For example people who live in trailers can call each other trailer trash, but it's rude for an outsider to do it. This is because it's an insult. Using the n word in the exact same context that black people use it is not an insult. It's literally a term of endearment in many contexts. The opposite of an insult. The n word clearly is not comparable to these sort of examples.

Genetics and circumstances may dictate how fat you can or can't get but getting to that point is nothing but choice and only choice (assuming that we choose what we eat). What other racial group uses and defends a racial slur coined by another to refer to each other? The fact that the community continues to use this word is beyond embarrassing and demonstrates how little respect it has for itself. You will never hear white people or east and south-east Asians refer to themselves as the c-word. They understand that racial slurs are slurs, but black people don't and wonder why they aren't respected when the community can't even get the basics right.

When I was younger I used to use it all the time. Playing basketball we would yell it at each other. When we saw each other we would use it to say hello. As I grew older when I heard another older black man use the word it sounded ignorant. I vowed never to use that word again. I have two young boys now and I swear if I ever hear them use that word they are. toast. I tell my friend now have some self respect and stop using it. Never ever say it to me again. Educate one man at a time my brothers

This is like saying if someone that is suicidal made a joke about killing themself it's ok but if someone else does it it's wrong like no on should be talking about it at all especially the suicidal person because if they start saying it more then other people will start to say it and then it will just keep spreading.

Actually, most suicidal people joke about killing themselves as a coping mechanism and *it IS perfectly okay* , because it's usually their first step to opening up. They just don't want to make it too seriously - _because there's a certain stigma around depression that people are afraid of_ - Many people get angry or extremely emotional _(like: HoW coUld yOu do tHis to ME - emotional)_ at you if you straight up tell them that you 'want' to kill yourself - but they will be more okay when you joke about it, and you will be more okay too because.... you know.... there's something humorous about how comedy can beat tragedy - even if just for a moment. *SO In reality* - joking about killing yourself - can make the suicidal person feel less alone and make them able to open up descretely about their issues without putting themselves in a vulnerable position or hyper-emotional state and thus can actually *prevent* themselves from taking their own life! *NOT talking about it - is what makes us suicidal.* _-or like, 'more' suicidal. We're already suicidal lol-_ Anyhow - joking about killing ourselves is really not 'as bad' for us as you think it is :T However, joking that _someone else_ should kill _themselves,_ is a big no no, under ANY and EVERY circumstance. That is what _really_ should be unacceptable!

I believe if someone is suicidal they can make jokes about to bring light to the situation, but then when suicidal people start saying these jokes other people start to make these jokes at the wrong times and in hurtful ways. This goes for people saying the n-word. When black people say the n-word people think it's fine but when say a white person says the n-word to a black person it's wrong. But the reason the white person would have said the n-word in the first place is because they are told they can't say it because of their skin color. If no one said the word at all there would be no power to the word making it not offensive.
