As soon as the camera stopped rolling he necked this back then confronted the neighbour about his overhanging hedge, the 2 of them were rolling about in the grass for 20 minutes until police arrived.

I remember the 1980s when the dedicated alcoholics would sit outside Sainsburys drinking dark blue tins of Tennants Super and gold tins of Carlsberg Special Brew. They were both 9.0% at the time. Potent stuff.

Anything 7.5 is usually cider territory. 8.5 is minimum tramp juice for me, an example being Oranjeboom. I can get Karpackie 500mls (Polish) 9% £1.50 at a shop in Bury. 2 of them takes the pain of life away.

Even bad beer is still beer. I've almost never ordered a pint and not been able to finish it because it's so bad. I can only think of about 1 or 2 occasions. I don't remember exactly the 2nd one. But I remember the first. I got a pint of Cains lager, in the middle of Liverpool. Cains is (was 🙁😢) the local brewery in Liverpool. I went to the brewery tap quite a few times. Actually now I think about it, both times were Cain's lager. I tried one in the middle of concert Square in Liverpool, and it tasted like vinegar to me. I don't know why. I can drink some real awful bollocks of beer just fine. And I even love the taste of vinegar, I use it in cooking all the time. But it's a nasty taste to have in a pint of lager. My best mate was with me and also had a pint of the Cains lager. And he also said it tasted like vinegar. We both independently came up with that verdict instead of one of us influencing the other. But Concert Square is a bit of a shithole surrounded on all 4 sides by clubs that are perpetually full of university students. We _WERE_ university students at the time but we generally hated going to clubs like that, we always much much preferred seeing bands play live music instead, which Liverpool is a wonderful city for, there's always bands playing everywhere in all the pubs. But yeah we assumed this particular bar/club in concert Square simply had terrible pipes that weren't being cleaned properly. Serving literally _thousands_ of pipes in one single night would lead to that very easily, obviously. So we decided to go to the Cains brewery tap again, and try the lager there instead. Because if anywhere will have clean pipes, it's the brewery itself. But no, the Cains lager at the brewery _ALSO_ tasted like vinegar. What a disappointment. Because their other beers were absolutely wonderful, all of them. The Cains Mild might still be the very best beer I've ever drank. Especially from the Brewery Tap of Cains itself. It was a wonderful, wonderful drink. It wasn't like all the overly sweet and cloying chocolate stout and oatmeal stouts you get everywhere now. I like those but I couldn't drink them all night long, I'd usually end up throwing up if I did. But Cains Mild was just absolutely gorgeous. It was like everything good about a great, standard Stout, but just much much smoother. Like it wasn't too sweet. It had just the right amount of bitter. But I absolutely adore Mild in general. It's such shame you so rarely see it anymore these days. The only places you can find it are like pubs that haven't updated anything about the pub for 50 years and are full of old fellas watching the horses on the TV, going back and forth to the betting shop next door. That kind of place. I love those kind of pubs, where it's like you're walking back in time to a little corner of the universe that exists outside of regular space time. You'll find Mild there, at least up north. I'm originally from Hertfordshire, very near London, and I don't think I've ever seen Mild in any pub south of Birmingham. Probably even more north than that. I mean yeah considering how popular chocolate and oatmeal stouts are these days, why isn't Mild being sold in real ale pubs too? It's the perfect kinda thing for hipsters cos nobody drinks it except old men and me (and I'm 35). It's the kind of thing that you could easily see making a comeback with loads of breweries doing the hipster thing and making their own versions of Mild. But yeah the very very best Mild I've ever had was at the Cains brewery tap. And I've had it from elsewhere in the city too, when Cains still existed, and it was always gorgeous. I miss Mild. I don't think I've even ever seen it for sale in cans anywhere, even online. But yeah some savvy independent real ale/micro brewery could easily spark a comeback of it.. And I can be even more of a hipster than all the newbies starting to drink it lol, because I've been drinking it ever since I was 18. And as I remember, every single other beer Cains made (at least under the Cains brand itself) was gorgeous. But yeah their lager was just rank. Lagers shouldn't have a vinegar taste in them. It feels like a mistake. But considering it tasted that way even at the brewery tap, it must have been intentional. Maybe that's why they went out of business lol. I think they made a stout as well as a mild and both were gorgeous. But yeah. Fun fact though, I walked past the Cains brewery quite a few times, and you could see right into their outside storage/loading area with all the lorries, right through the chain link fence or whatever it was, it was metal but it had big gaps in it so you could see. And stacked right up to the fence, literally touching it, was case after case after case after case of Tesco' basic lager. Or whatever they called it back then. The hyper cheap brand tesco used that was even cheaper than their usual own brand stuff. It was only 2%, barely alcoholic enough to even be worth it. Who was it for? People who didn't have a lot of money would rather buy the super strong lagers. So I just never understood who the market for it was. I don't know if Cains made the cheap arse Tesco basics lager for the entire country, or just for the north. But I mean the number of pallets of them was immense, never ending, stacked up high and covering like several acres of space it looked like. So I wouldn't be surprised if they made tesco basics lager for the whole country And honestly that tesco basics 2% lager that Cains made was probably still nicer than their vinegar lager. Vinelager. Urgh. Nasty bollocks. I'm pretty sure that literal bollocks would taste better than that stuff. Just so weird they could make the best Mild I've ever tasted but at the same time make the worst lager I've ever tasted.

Oh yeah speaking of beer in Liverpool. I've been to Dublin, I've been to the Guinness brewery. I've had several pints of the Guinness from the brewery there (or where it used to be anyway, these days it's a Guinness museum, but it's still said to be the best Guinness you'll find anywhere). It was lovely. Definitely a great pint of Guinness. But it's not the best. No the best Guinness I've ever had, and I know it for sure because I have it year after year after year, is at the Adelphi Hotel. The big famous shit hole which consistently has been shut down temporarily over and over again because they keep failing health inspections because of the state of their kitchens. And all the rooms there are falling apart. I do love that hotel though, it reminds me very much of the overlook hotel in the shining. Especially when you go to the underground part of the hotel with all these absolutely gigantic enormous ballrooms all underground. It's gorgeous in a gaudy mid 20th century kinda way. But anyway yeah. Every year in Liverpool for the last like 40 years, is Beatle Week. It's a week long music festival where almost every band is a Beatles tribute band. They do it in different styles, some try to be authentic as possible, others are all female versions of the Beatles, other bands play Beatles songs but in different genres, like Punk, or Metal. And the other 10% or so of bands are tribute bands for other bands from around the time like the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Who, the Small Faces, etc. It's the best music festival in the world. I've been I think now 15 years in a row. But anyway it's primarily situated in the Adelphi hotel. There's bits and bobs in some other places like the Cavern of course. But the main stuff happens in the Adelphi. Including an all nighters which goes on till like 6am. But in the Adelphi right in lobby off to the side they have a little bar called the American Bar. For pretty much the entire year it's closed, they use it for storing people's suitcases if they arrive before they can check in to their room. But they do open it for 1 week a year, for Beatle week. They have a lot of bars in the hotel like that that only get used for beatle week and maybe one or two other conventions that may happen there. But the "American bar"... well, it's the place that served the best Guinness in the world. I swear. Like I said I've been drinking Guinness from there for 15 years now. It's the best Guinness you will ever taste. It's markedly better than the Guinness at the Guinness brewery/museum in Dublin. And I _DO_ _NOT_ say that lightly. I was honestly pretty disappointed at the Guinness in Dublin. Just in general, all around Dublin, as well as at the Guinness brewery. Because everyone raves about it so much. I honestly think it's probably Americans who build up that hype and reputation. They love to cosplay as Irish, even though they were born and raised in the US which makes the American, not Irish. But the ones who get to go visit the "home country" as it were are amazed at how much better the Guinness in Dublin is compared to the Guinness in the US. And I'm sure it is. I've never been to the US but I doubt they can pull a good pint of Guinness. So yeah, of course, the Guinness in Dublin is great, don't get me wrong. But plenty of pubs in tbe UK have Guinness that's just as good. It's not like it's noticeably better or something like that. But the Guinness in the American bar in the lobby of the Adelphi hotel for the 1 week a year it's open, has the best Guinness on the planet. I swear to you. I swear on me mum. The problem is that during beatle week you aren't allowed into the hotel unless you have a ticket for that night's festival performances. Well unless you're just a regular guest there, staying in a room but not going to beatle week. I'm not exactly sure how they stop those people from seeing the bands, but hey ho. So if you ever get the chance, go to the best music festival in the world, Beatles Week, every year on the late August Bank Holiday weekend. You could just go to 1 night of it it you want, you wouldn't have to go to the whole thing. You buy individual tickets for each day. It's usually about £25 per night. Sunday is more expensive because they have the Beatles convention going in all day then too as well as the bands. But yeah you could just go for 1 night, and then head straight for the American bar, where you'll find a big queue that goes out the door, all waiting to get their pints of Guinness. Because everyone knows it's the best Guinness you'll ever taste. Maybe it's because they only use the pipes 1 week a year, and so they're just much much much cleaner than the pipes are at other pubs and bars that are open all year round and see constant use? Who knows. I don't know what magic sorcery they use. But it's a tradition every year, first drink of the festival, we alway head to the American Bar first and have our introductory pint or Guinness. I wait all year round for it. I wait all year round to taste that incredible drink every year and it's the best tasting beer I will have all year long. I'm starting to get a pavlovian reaction just thinking about the lol 😂

My wife calls them ‘EBs’: Evil Brews. I got into liking Carlsberg SB around the time of The Battle of the Beanfield and the last free summer festival scene… there was a bunch called the Brew Crew at that time. The reason ppl drank them was purely for effect: it’s the cheapest bang for your buck. We all experimented with various substances but it was these brews that stuck. I lost two good friends. Not through the usual drug abuse, although one ended up on methadone, but it was the drink that killed them. They’d moved onto Skol Super, as it was the cheapest, and one of the strongest. One friend was found dead in his grandfathers old flat (spleen exploded) and he was drinking big bottles of StrongbowRed, which rips your innerds out. It was all very sad. I’ve cut down massively from what used to be a daily intake, but still enjoy the occasional chilled Carlsberg. I’m subscribed to your channel because i was curious to find out what quality beer is all about… i don’t think the addition of glucose syrup helps the flavour, but it’s a major ingredient in many of these cheap high strength beers. They’re certainly mood altering beverages which can take hold after just one can, but i found that, generally speaking & dependent on the drink, alcohol just makes ppl violent (ok, gin makes ppl weep). Everything in moderation is my moto these days.

I've been trying to find a good quality, reasonably strong lager and am getting nowhere. At the extreme end of the scale I remember Carlsberg Special Brew years ago was a nice drop if properly chilled. Stella Artois, also had quite a kick and was lovely in the 90's, and then Becks was my go to. It all seems like they're changing the recpies or the abv's for some reason and the quality isn't the same. Any recommendations fot good quality lager in the UK?

They probably brew it because it completes their range. Traditionally you have weak lagers competing with other weak beers, you have the premium export strengths competing in another tier, and then you have special brew and the like competing with barley wines. The thing that annoys me about the super strength drinks now is that they are messed about with and don't taste like they should. I don't know if its the brewers form of shrinkflation or to keep the units down. Either way I would rather have it in a smaller can and still tasting right. If I just wanted to just drink loads and keep visiting the toilet I would buy some supermarket basics beers at 2% and have what is like water with a hint of beer.

Yes many recipes changed They also dropped the alcohol content in them The old Carlsberg Special brew 9% and it tasted alright strong and cheap but ok, now like a lot it's at 7.5% Think the recipes changed to cut costs and also all the tax reasons especially in Scotland This was all really cheap once now it's not a good pick for value The king of cost to ABV I think is still the cheap "sherry" fortified wine Alcoholics often get low or run out of money so you have to work out the best way to maximise alcohol percentage per penny White cider was the one but now that's way to expensive considering it tastes terrible, brutal hangover and makes I'll quicker Say you have £10 and you have to get enough booze to get completely drunk, how do you do it?

Some used to say it about White Cider also In this context It's just super strength mass and cheaply produced Lager. Although the classic Carlsberg Special brew is super expensive now due to how it's all taxed It is known as quick way of getting a booze hit as while it doesn't taste so good it's fairly easy to down Lot of the original recipes have changed and some not as strong as was But it was a way to get a high ABV for least money. A bang for the buck type thing Is lots of European similar ones available like Karpackie Super. They do all taste very syrupy Best way to find out is get 4 cans and down them it does seem to have a certain effect Tennent's super is probably a good start

Back in my bad old days during the 80's I would spend a day chugging through tin after tin of Tennents Super or Super T as me and my so called friends used to call it. It always tasted bloody awful to begin with but, the more you drank, the better the taste got. Like the Lynx Super, which sounds like a deoderant, the Super T had that strange fumey, chemical smell to it. We joked that it was because they didn't brew it but just mixed a load of chemicals together in a big bucket and poured it straight into the tins. I'm not so sure it's a joke now. Still, I was never drinking the bloody stuff for the taste or nice hoppy aroma, I was drinking it to numb my body and mind. It used to keep the cold out, or at least thats how it felt, and I could forget my situation for a bit. And, in my defence, I was not one of those troublesome drunks who shouted and swore at passers-by or picked fights with random items of street furniture. I just used to sit quietly in the park sliding into oblivion. Thank god those days are done.

@@CB-ke7eq as an Englishman I was baffled by "edward fortyhands" lol. This was at U of L in KY a decade ago 2 lads "volunteered", I sneaked little draws of the smaller guy's 40s in my glass because I was worried for his health since he'd taken a whole lot of stuff that night. I later learned the other "contestant" was a convicted domestic terrorist who came to sell his addys; he wasn't even a student there. gas station kratom, swill and a $400ish rattly AR-15 that we could barely afford the ammo for. Open carry for long guns at aged 16 in KY had me.... confused. God, I love the USA.

Tried the old Tennents Super in the 1980s when it was 9.5%. It wasn't bad at all, but one can put me to sleep. Special Brew is foul. Skol 1080 in 275ml bottles used to be the stuff towards the end of a pub crawl when you couldn't face more pints. It was quite nice.

I recall buying a case of that years ago....I think it was higher than 7.5% then though. And....It was utterly horrific!!! Pure ghastliness in a tin.

In '87 Tennent's Extra very quickly brought me to a bottom in London. It was bad. We used to drink malt liquor in 40 ounce bottles(Mickey's, Old English 800, King Cobra, Country Club). Higher alcohol content, but not extreme. 13% is heinous. Suprising how quickly the terrible taste became acceptable.

Homeless people in the US love the version we have called Steel Reserve. Same marketing strategy with both high ABV and low price plastered on the cans. These are mostly sold in economically challenged areas or within ethnic communities…. Could it be a form a government control, keeping people from achieving their best?
