I can relate to this. Though for all of my adult life I kept my hair nearly as short as it was when I was in the Air Force, as I got to my mid-fifties for some reason I decided to let it grow out. Since it's fine and full of natural highlights, and well cared for, it ended up being so beautiful that I decided to keep it long. But then when it got down past the top of my back I found that it was constant work keeping it untangled. Also, I didn't like it yanking my head back when I sat back in a chair or sat up in bed, so one day I just lopped it off to about shoulder length. It's just now long enough again to want to tangle, so what I've learned is I need to keep it no more than two or three inches past the top of my shoulders. Long hair is a real chore. If having it long adds to your appeal and you feel like you need that added appeal, I could see dealing with it, but not otherwise. As for the psychology of why some women cut their hair when brokenhearted, I think I get that. When something dramatic overtakes you, one way to take back control is to do something dramatic to or for yourself, as though it's you instead of him whose changed your life this much and this abruptly. I think it's much the same as what guys often do when brokenhearted. They'll diet quite sternly and then hit the gym like crazy, all of which is difficult and even painful, but at least these are forms of difficulty they've chosen for themselves and are in control of. Too, naturally, it's to make themselves more appealing either in hopes of winning her back or just to up their chances of catching another woman's eye.

When my Mom was going through terrible marital problems, she shaved her head. Us six kids were so traumatized that we did not invite our friends over for many months until it started growing back. She ended out in a mental hospital for a while. Sad story.

Long hair over years, all of a sudden cut very short - is a signifying of a LIFE CHANGE MOMENT, or FATIGUE..Some women simply get tired of the maintenance, upkeep, problems, expense, and time. Sleeping is a problem. Also, men who like/love long hair on a woman - down to her waist - are always pressing on it; sitting on it; and getting yelled at by the woman over that hair.. Sometimes it just needs to go..😢
