Well I like it. I’ve got everything from Benchmark to Buffalo Trace to Eagle Rare to Garrison Bros to Van Winkle Lot B in my bar along with countless others and I still love me some BH. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Ive been a bourbon drinker for many years. My go to is Wild Turkey Rare Breed but i occasionally like a little Basil Haden for a light drink. I can tell you why its so popular, light drinkers like it because it dosent burn their throats out and it had a good flavor. Its a gateway bourbon 😊

I enjoy it when i want to sip on something while playing cards or a game. With the proof can sip all night and and doesn't hit as hard as a higher proof would.

Basil Hayden is a great sipping bourbon. I usually don’t go for whiskey straight up, but this is the exception. It’s very smooth, with no harsh afterbite. I love Jim Beam white label, but if you can’t tell the difference in quality then maybe bourbon isn’t your thing.

This x 100. I am more a scotch drinker than bourbon, but I find Basil Hayden to be a very nice whiskey. I dont understand the internet hate for it.

Basil is an easy sipper. Its non offensive, it will give you a slower buzz so its a more responsible choice for people who tend to over drink. With that being said, the price should make you second guess it.

I bought the same half size bottle about a year ago, and yes, the look of the bottle was what made me buy it. To me, it tasted kind of like a Scotch-y type of bourbon, as in ”if it’s possible for a bourbon to remind you of Scotch whiskey, it would be Basil Hayden”. There’s no discussion that the price is completely unjustified. I mean, in Oregon it’s at about the same price as Rare Breed, for God’s sake! I would never buy it again. However, if you don’t enjoy high proof and aggressive flavor bourbon , and some people don’t, and you don’t mind the price, I actually think it’s not that bad. Some people like their light beer - this can be your light bourbon.

I love BH dark rye, because of the smooth sweetness. I have not tried old tub, I would like to see a video with BH dark rye and what you would compare it to. Love the video!

I'm enjoying some right now with a cigar and I really like it. Also, the retro-hale is nice, but mind you I haven't tried many bourbons. I will try the ones that you've mentioned.

I just got one today after 3 people over Thanksgiving and a Saturday Duck tailgater said they 'LOVE' Basil Hayden. So I'll have some tonight, hope I like it, I do like my Knob 9.

I stood in the whiskey section for 15 minutes staring down every bottle, no idea what to do. Read a few bottle descriptions and decided on their Malted Rye. As a non-whiskey drinker it’s extremely overwhelming trying to find something decent. I usually just do my research after the purchase. Luckily it sounds like Malted Rye could be a solid choice

I like Basil Hayden paired with my cigar. It's so easy to drink and before we realize it half the bottle is gone and we're having a good time. I am a casual drinker. I don't have to force this down like others of probably higher quality.

I mean for this Beam high-rye mash bill, up the proof a bunch and drop the price an equal bunch with OGD BiB or OGD 114. I’ve never had BH either, but I also know plenty of its stans.

I really enjoyed the first half bottle, but got tired of it. It was smooth and sweet, but won't buy again. Not much going on--as you said. But, it is better than the other ones on this video Yes, excellent looking bottle for newbies

Basil Hayden is a huge seller for Beam Suntory. Last year it was tied with Makers Mark for the largest percentage growth of any bourbon brand that Beam Suntory owns. You tasted the base bottle but much of what they sell are the finished and other variations. Some are very creative like Toast which uses brown rice in the mashbill. It's obviously not for you and I doubt it's for anyone watching whiskeytube channel. How often do any of us drink 80 proof bourbon? For its audience though it's a great product. The sales numbers and growth prove that Beam Suntory are doing something very very right. Everything doesn't have to be for us.

I almost never comment on a video but this is a home run! There is literally no reason to buy or drink Basil Hayden. I don’t hate on anything. There is just is no reason for the price. Its not awful, but it’s not good, and its not worth a premium. Name an 80 proof whiskey priced at 40+ bucks that cant be beat by a 20-30 dollar bottle. It can’t be done!

Basil Hayden was the first bourbon I was able to drink neat. I had it at a bar once.

Same! I drink EH Taylor and Blanton’s neat, but it’s more because of the price and prestige than the taste. BH cost about $43 where I’m at, and to me that’s a steal! I could go thru 2 bottles of Beam or Four Roses in the same time it takes to finish a 750ml of Basil Hayden.

I think it’s how you feel the next day that makes basil hayden. The better buy. I don’t feel like I was drinking the night before when I have basil hayden

Tried it this weekend. Super sweet. But rather pay $12 for Benchmark Top Floor or $17 for 1783. Maybe a little too sweet for me. 🤷‍♂️ I wouldn’t pay $38 for it. Thanks for a friend that let me try it.

BH is like the pilsner of bourbons - nothing challenging, harsh, or high proof. "Nothing" WRONG with it, but nothing special either. (experienced bourbon drinker/collector here). OKay, so the only thing wrong with it is the price point. When I used to be able to get it for $20 at the local Class Six, it was fine. But at $40+, it's overpriced.

People who like BasilHayden may have never compared it to any other whiskey. They have no frame of reference. Good video though. Two thumbs up.

Wow! Shocked you didn't mention that BH is basically (or maybe exactly) Old Grand Dad, possibly aged a little longer. OGD is also a Beam product & the Mashbill is 63% Corn, 27% Rye, 10% Malted Barley, released ~1882. BH is a Beam product, as you mentioned, with the exact same mashbill as OGD. BH released at least 100yrs after OGD with an 8yr age statement. It now is NAS. Additionally, the OGD Bonded bottle is the exact same bottle as BH bottle & guess who's picture is on every expression of the OGD bottle? Yes, that is Mr. Basil Hayden!

IMO, non-bourbon/whiskey drinkers like it because its methanol level is palatable. It's "smooth" to non liquor drinkers. They aren't necessarily looking for flavor as much as drinkability.

Last time I was in NYC I checked out a bourbon bar and it was a nice place. Great selection, generous pours, and friendly folks. Some of the younger ones chatted me up and asked me if I wanted some of "the best bourbon ever." Hey, I wasn't paying so I accepted the offer. Basic Basil Hayden. The Kool-Aid of Bourbon. It's sweet, it's weak, and it's for newbies. If you're a bourbon drinker, I can't see how this watery crap could possibly be your favorite.

There are better lower proof bourbons not just for less than $40 but also in a similar price range. Knob 9 at 100 proof for $35 or Michter’s small batch at like 92 proof for $45 are great grabs in a similar price range, IMO

I’m not sure a cask strength Basil Hayden would be all that good. It uses the same mash bill as OGD but it comes off the still at 125 instead of 180, and it’s further diluted to 115 before it’s barreled. It’s about $35-40 in my area, so it’s perfect for guests who don’t drink a lot of neat spirits. Seems more like a competitor to Gentleman Jack than anything.

What do you mean, "instead of 180" The legal maximum that bourbon can be distilled to, is 160 Proof. So, it's not like 180 is an option what any other bourbon is/was.

It is difficult laying a 750ml bottle of 80 proof bourbon on a counter and paying $42 for it. The only upside to this bottle is that it is indeed perfect (proof & taste) for a newbie that is getting into bourbon or someone who truly does prefer a lower proof bourbon but that is the only one I can see. You can get a bottle (750ml) of Knob Creek 9 yr. for $36 or a 1l for just a dollar more than the B/H @ $42. and why is Old Grand Dad 114 proof with an actual picture of Basil Hayden on the bottle (750ml) only $27? I drink higher proof Old Fashions and if I want a second, I may use the Basil Hayden, but only till the bottle is gone.

Never tried it, was wondering what the big deal was. Something I don't understand, a brother wanted a bottle of Basil Hayden bourbon for his birthday. Mike my little brother just took the bottle and put it away. And we aren't Mexican or Spanish nor are we French. Something strange about it. I'm wondering if it was some type of cult thing. Never again would I partake in so called family function.

I am not a fan, proof and price along with no taste its not very good. seems very very watered down. many other budget bourbons sub $30 are much better

LOL, I had gotten one years ago when I was newer to the whiskey thing and even then I was like this is just brown water. What is the point of this? So I gave the bottle away to one of my wife's coworkers who had said they liked it.
