Because the rude ones, the ones who zip past and cut in between on-comers and the ones in the same direction, the ones who don't use their voices or bells and scare the snot out of people, are making a bad name for cyclists. The good ones, the polite ones, don't get noticed because we don't make a stink, or scare people, or endanger people.

Yeah I'm mixed about it too. On one hand we know Dan for the funny entertaining person he is...but the series he is doing is actually quite void of 'funny' and comes across as a rather serious take on his health and fitness...which I actually love. And I get he can probably take the jokes. But at the same time...they are unnecessary too. That said... Dan and GCN have poked fun at lots of things in the past, perhaps not a person's body, but equally choices. Frankly I'd rather most men look like Dan than the actual 'dad bods' and obese bodies many have and are applauded for seemingly. Ironically, it is interesting that we are fine with this because Dan is a guy, yet no-one would dare say anything like this if a female presenter did something similar. I'm not saying we should all be as precious as females....because god...we need to not take things too seriously...but agree...for all the people taking the piss in a loving way I imagine there are many intentionally nasty comments on there. It's the fine line between having a laugh and body shaming right? Ultimately I think if Dan was that concerned about it, he'd have been able to cover up and do the test and images. So it's probably a case of defending someone that doesn't need defending. Fair point though.

We have a series of trails/paths here in the Chicago area. Around 66% of the users are cyclists. 44% on foot. And yet they are talking about creating a speed limit for cyclists because of a small percentage of walkers get spooked when you ride past them going 15 mph. All of these complaints are coming from people wearing headphones, who can’t hear you say “On your left.” And yet, their first solution is implement a speed limit for bikes that is unenforceable, rather than telling people on foot to pay attention and not play their music too loud.

Once I went to uni with a bike since I didn't have class and only needed to be there for few minutes, on the entrance I was not allowed to get in because of the bicycle and the security guards said "It's not allowed to bring a bicycle inside the territory of the university" and "It's dangerous", keep in mind that cars, motorcycles and even trucks are allowed in. I'm still to this day trying to figure out how can a bicycle be dangerous to others in a place like university while having other vehicles there that can actually kill a person in an accident.

Vehicle drivers are not always the most patient species , on the planet. Instead of owning up to being annoyed to have to share the road, they call all cyclist evil. society trends being as they are, like blaming Jewish society for all sins, then get away with it. It catches on politically. The same happens with cyclist. It's going to take a big change in society, for this to change. Just like the change in priority in british law. Used to be might is right but now, the most vulnerable is the state of play. Pedestrians first now, to reinforce road safety. People don't like change, so the local councils may need to set the trend, before it catches on. By cycle lanes and enforcing tolerance.

"Security concerns", ridiculous. The danger comes from cars, not from bicycles, so if security concerns are not just a pretext, officials should ban cars. Maybe then many people would switch to their bikes that were to frightened to do so before. Here in Germany cyclists are more and more forced to use "bike lanes", and officials pretend that this is a benefit for cyclists - those danaer presents just suck, the only reason for this is to make roads becoming "bike-free areas".

@overcookit1433

@@andlum83 That is true, unfortunately. Here in Germany is has become quite common to rush over crossroads (bicycles AND cars), even when the red light was on for more than four seconds. Even when the other direction already accelerates, still some guys rush over the crossroads; I always check twice when I have green lights, whether someone comes my way. And cyclists acting as if there was no traffic lights, they suck - once I saw a guy in the dress of a local cycling club, I nearly sent them an email whether they teach their members to behave this way. And some riders (especially those with an e-motor on their bike) make a swerve over the pedestrians lane on red lights, as if this makes it less bad.

Random fact: Standard Oil (commonly known by its initials) was broken up by the federal government into 34 companies for being a monopoly. One of these companies, The Standard Oil Company of New Jersey had the bright idea to change their name to ESSO the phonetic name for the old conglomeration, which created the illusion that they were the old giant in the publics mind. In my Dutch city there is actually a place where bikes are banned; the old city centre. It can be recognised by two things: The sign 'no bikes between 9:00-18:00' as well as the bikeparking where you can leave your bike before doing your shopping.

Some of the banning perception is about how the police manage the enforcement. For example adults are officially prohibited from bicycling on sidewalks here, but I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket. Slowly pedaling and not bothering pedestrians works out fine in reality and police have better things to worry about

Suicide Brakes were what they called the top brakes on vintage bikes. On cross bikes, they are called interrupters. As for Hacks, best one I've seen over the years for rear derailleur hanger alignment is by using two threaded metal rods and 6 nuts from the hardware store. Take the wheel off the rear, and remove the rear derailleur from the hanger. Then put one rod through the frame axle to hold straight by tightening the nuts. Then put the second rod through the hanger mount and use the nuts to hold the rod. Now you can see the difference of the two rods in 3D. Adjust/bend the rod on the hanger until it is parallel with the axle rod. Works far better than the hanger alignment tool.

The thing that annoys me about cycling lanes is when they exist until you reach a set of bollards, then the priority is given back to the cars, only for the cycle lane to reappear 20 yards further down the road 🤪 What are we supposed to do get off walk the 20 yards then remount... 🤔 why doesn't the cycling lane continue and a giveway to cyclists sign put up to make the drivers beware...or is that to obvious 🤔

The service station bike work stand is great. Quite apart from being a good place to repair your bike (and no doubt add to the service station's profit by buying an overpriced drink while you're at it), this is also useful for people transporting bikes on their cars to have an opportunity to repair their bike as well.

As a french viewer I need to jump in the comment :) "La doyenne" means "la plus ancienne" or "la plus vieille" and as an adjective it could be applied to anything being feminine (because of La and not Le...). So it could apply to "bike race" or to "classic bike race". And in French when you same La doyenne what you really mean is "La doyenne des classiques" (ie : the oldest of the classic bike races" and not "the old lady" ;-)

Related to bike routes being closed - quite to the contrary, I’m in Southern California and they are adding bike lanes all over the place. In addition of standard bike lanes - the powers that be are labeling entire automobile lanes on two lane streets as bike lanes. As an avid cyclist and one who has coexisted sharing the road without incident for 40 years - my mantra is “just because we can - doesn’t mean we should” - by taking up the entire lane.

From the Netherlands: Many of our city centres are closed to cyclists during shopping hours. HOWEVER, that only applies to the handful of streets where all the shops are, and those streets will be exclusive to foot traffic, and going there by bike is still much more convenient than by car. Detours will only cost a few minutes either. I think cities abroad that this 'example' and close off the centre without doing the legwork to have it make sense.

I live in Flanders, Overijse. Roads here are... character building. Cycle lanes are... even better character builders. I sometimes prefer to avoid roads that have a cycle lane just so that drivers don't complain about me riding on the road. I am sometimes cheeky and ride on the road even if there is a cycle paths next to it. Only when traffic is light, for everyone's sake. But thats still when I get the occasional "fietspad" yell directed at me, even if it's dead simple to pass, sometimes from the other side of the road, amusingly. Riding with a radar improved this situation, because I ride on the road until someone's getting close, with no surprises. Money well spent. Having ranted out, I must say I still feel quite lucky with all the infrastructure and especially the cycling culture around me.

Bloody hell, I live in Ghent and do exactly the same - avoiding roads with separate cycle lanes. Last weekend I was cycling in Overijse (on the descent of the Koxberg towards Huldenberg) and a driver was klaxoning at me and pointing towards the sidewalk, which is strictly pedestrian-only (and with a 90° curbstone). When I didn't comply, he started driving at 15 km/h without leaving space to pass. I even double-checked and asked someone whether I missed something.
@shuycg

@@rderouckI ride on that road very often. Uphill or downhill, I never use the hybrid sidewalk, that does turn into a separate bike path higher up. I've yet to receive complaints from drivers. I have experienced frequent closures of cycle paths and bike lanes in construction areas in Portland, Oregon, which is a city that would like to fancy itself as the Netherlands or the Copenhagen of the northwestern United States, when it comes to cycling infrastructure. But in reality we do a poor job of building, connecting, and maintaining our infrastructure. And bikes always get deprioritized in favor of cars. It's standard practice for construction crews to place road safety signs in positions that completely block cycle lanes in advance of road construction sites. There have also been a number of critical cycle lanes that have been closed for upwards of a year and half adjacent to construction sites in locations where all of the lanes that are reserved for motor vehicles remained open for the duration of the construction.

I like the bike service station at Esso. Also required are e-bike chargers. You have electric car chargers in car parks, why not bikes as well. I was out on a ride a couple of weeks ago when I came across two women (with small dogs) on e-bikes, and they asked for a recommendation for food and somewhere to plug their bikes in for a charge. I don't ride an e-bike but there is an ever increasing number of people who do, especially in North East Somerset because it's a bit hilly around here as you know. Best I could recommend was my local bike shop as they have a nice cafe and they'll probably charge a bike because they're nice people. So all you coffee shops and pubs need to follow their lead

Hi GCN Don't know if this is interesting or relevant. I'm your classic 55-year-old MAMIL and suffer like everyone else with bad car drivers. However, I often ride with my son who rides a hand bike. He's very low to the ground and I used to worry about him a lot, but amazingly, almost every driver gives him so much space, and they all slow down. I think this feeds right into what you were saying about drivers not seeing regular cyclists as 'human' but when they see the hand bike they must think 'Wow what's that, better give him lots of room'. Interesting or maybe not. While I'm on the subject it'd be cool to maybe include some hand-biking or other disability stuff at some point.

Sadly this is because there are next to none to begin with outside of Belfast (and even then...). Believe me, you're lucky if you have some temporary closures of cycle lanes, it would be nice to have the chance.
