Rather than putting their mouths in water to drink, elephants suck it into their trunks before squirting it into their mouths. Why? When you're as big as an elephant getting your head all the way down to the ground, or below water level for that matter, is a big ask. They'd need to be standing in quite deep water to allow them drink directly through their mouths, especially as their tusks would get in the way otherwise.
Using their trunks means they can keep their heads up, which means they can keep an eye out for predators (lions will attack and kill a young elephant). They can also suck the water from a clean spot, rather than churning up the silt with their feet and tusks and making the water muddy.
On a hot day (and there are plenty of those in Africa) its also a useful way to keep cool, squirting the water over yourself and your friends...
