I read that no one was interested in making a Frankie Lymon biopic until the wives sued for royalties, so we wouldn't have gotten a movie at all if Diana Ross didn't remake the song causing a stir.

Even though this was suppose to be a biopic, it felt like a comedy to me 🤣. Also, this was Lela Rochon’s underrated role. She doesn’t get enough credit for being stunning and being a decent actress.

Low key if Larenz Tate and Lela Rochon did a romance movie in the late 90s like in the last half of the movie I would enjoy it because I loved Emira's romance between Frankie. It felt so adorable and sweet.

The real story is very sad he was only 25 when he passed away. They use to live fast back then, and they looked a lot older because of it. Frankie like a lot of boys who lost their virginity early was abused and I don't think we talk about it enough.

Frankie Lyman had a very traumatic childhood. Yes he did grow up rather quickly , if I remember correctly, his father either died or left the family at some point. (I really can’t remember) but his love of music started with his father. He and siblings had to support the family. But a woman was sexually m*****ing him at a very young and and was doing drugs at 13 or so. So that started his sexual exploits. He passed away between the ages of 26-30. The adults in his life had failed him. Even on tour the adults failed him

I was a kid when this movie came out and had a major crush on Larenz Tate so I loved this movie back when it came out. Now as an adult and after this review, I'm definitely watching it with a side eye from now on. Yuck at this baby being 14 and 15 with whole relationships with grown women. Where were his parents or guardians? We definitely need a new biopic that is more Historically accurate because so much got glossed over and glamorized that we missed Frankie's real life story. Thank you for doing the research and dropping facts that we never knew.

The real story of Frankie Lymon is WAY more interesting than the movie. His young life was hardly believable and needs to be told because this movie falls terribly short of his amazing reality. I visited his grave in the early 1980's. It was unmarked.

This movie was everything and then some. I did not know about him having any children. The casting was on point, and I loved everything about it, the costumes etc really captured that time in the 50's and 60's. And Vivica played that role very well. She should have gotten an Oscar for best supporting actress...i doubt if she was even nominated. smh.

Yes girl I love the review you covered everything omg . The reason why I love Lorenz Tate is because of this movie I was in the 3rd grade when mom had this on blue ray I used to rewatch it to see him and for the comedy. But my Vivica foxx was where it was at. I used to be rooting for her to win in court even-though I saw it a thousand time despite Zola Taylor struggle with him. she went through so much with him she deserved so much more and so did the other women but I must say they cast the right people in this movie cause each one of the ladies did amazing job. The fighting scene with pool was my favorite scene and you are so right they should’ve got more into his childhood I always wondered when he started using drugs like what led him into these habits and I didn’t even know he was sleeping with older women and had to grow up quick which makes since look at Micheal Jackson and his brothers and New edition which was a perfect comparison cause he was that blue print first, but I agree they should make a second part of the movie focusing on him and the teenagers. But the women carried the show especially V. Foxx she had me rolling. This was a really good movie but it was missing details they should make along move like the Jackson 5 American dream and try to get more into his life and how he met the group that would be awesome like the temptations. Oh you should do a review on them lol but overall these reviews are everything you point out things that I never noticed before great job gorgeous 💕💕💜🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Yoooo you had me entertained this is my favorite movie of all time and you brought some very valid points. From my vantage point this movie gave us music romance comedy and history all in one. I feel the writer made the choice of this story to be told from the perspective of the women which for me was the right choice cause i was ENTERTAINED THOROUGHLY. But when u start filling us in on some of the real story that was interesting too! I could see a biography from his point but I just feel like Frankie lymon wasn’t a household name for people to care about so they made it about the women. But they taught me what shade was and vivica OWNED this role. And this movie. But I loved Zola being glamorous and bougie “sit yo nappy headed ass down”😂😂😂”im Mrs Frankie lymon” repeated by all 3 women was when I knew this was gonna be good and was a clear indication whose story this was. Thanks for being thorough about this one. Loved it.

Lorenz Tate did a great job as Frankie but at the beginning he was too old to play a 12 yr old much less lip-synch like one he could played Frankie when he was 17 or 18 yrs old. Had Frankie still lived I could see him being a mentor to up & coming new artists as someone said he would've been the new Sammy Davis Jr. And since Tyra brought it up she right, this movie really wasn't about Frankie it was mostly about the women in his life so the title should've been called "Frankie Lymon & the Women Who Knew Him" or "The Wives of Frankie Lymon."

But its been probably 20yrs since I seen this movie so I can't comment too hard, but the vague memory I DO have of it is that I was mad at Frankie for playing these 2 women & puttimg them in this horrible financial position years after his death, but also feeling sad that he was all over the place with his life BECAUSE he was preyed upon as a child sexually & financially. I had NO IDEA he was 9 - 13 sleeping with legal-a$$ age women 🤯! I thought he was maybe 16 or something when he was sleeping with these ol' a$$ women --- not that that was any better --- but 9 & 13 😳🤦🏾‍♂️!! I remember the real court case as a kid. A lot of this movie is true. Some of it is not. But the court case, the drug use. The 3 wives. The break up of the group. Frankie becoming a full blown junky. All of that is true.

I’ve always said that the film woulda been completely different had Martin Scorsese directed it. He woulda gone deeper into his childhood, getting muscled by mobsters, Morris Levy (very much mafia connected) cheating him, and his family background. Scorsese had planned on doing it. SN: Frankie Lymon was not a good looking pretty boy like Larenz Tate.

Jimi Hendrix one was exaggerated, American biography is nothing new when it comes to exaggeration.
