Why Do Games Cost $60? Why Hasn't The Price of Video Games Changed?

Why hasn't the price of video games changed? Why don't the prices ever seem to increase for new games even the game development of indie and triple A (AAA) game has gone up so much? Do we now live in the world of microtransactions where games like Fortnite Battle Royale are offered free but make millions of dollars in selling cosmetic things? Should games for PC be costing the same as games for Xbox and PS4? Will the price shift to match more games without campaigns like PUBG?

Edit: probably because ps3 and xbox 360 games ran in HD and graphically look better especially if it was the same game xbox 360 and ps3 version looked way better then the wii and ps2 version.

Countless hours of fun, Good graphics (Most modern games at least), Good production values, different genres to choose from. no mention of pc gaming. pc games normally cost less. the main reason is that 99.9% of pc gamers buy their games digitally. also, $60 is actually considered expensive still. you have to realise that gta 5(a very big game) costs the same amount as a call of duty game(quite a small game content wise)

Back in the day, there wasnt a big group of gamers. They existed, but compared to now, but if I look at statistics, in america alone, there were less gamers then there were black people. In the late 90's, that is when the amount of gamers started rising, and it still is. There is a thing called demand and supply and you can see a lot more people willing to buy games at 60$ than there are people willing to buy it at higher prices. You have an economical point where you have the highest profit compared to expenses. For games, this is at 60$. They spend the least amount of money and sell it for the most amount. Sell it for 50$, and the increase in sales wont be big enough to cover the 10$ gap. Increase it to 70$ and the increase in income per game wont cover the loss of people buying it.

I've always felt like paying $60 for a game is honestly not that terrible as long as you can get in a decent amount of play time with that game. I also feel like, paying a little more for different editions of the game is sometimes worth it too. I don't see why people complain about the price of games. If I can get at least an hour per $ spent on a videogame, I think it's a pretty worthy investment. You're basically buying entertainment for $1 an hour. That's how I look at it.

You also need to consider the volume of sales has increased dramatically from the 90s as gaming has transitioned from a select few fans with there own personal consoles to being widely available across the world to all levels of society. This will compensate the increase in production expenses, but will inevitably come to an end if the volume of sales slow in its acceleration which is a possibility due to the finite number of people gaming. Contrary to that idea however many more children are getting into gaming at very young ages so this may continue for as long as the population is increasing.

Whenever I bought games for Playstation and N64 back in the 90s in America, the prices were around $29-49 for newly released games. I recall buying Mortal Kombat 4 for PS1 on its first week of release, it was well under $50. Dreamcast and PS2 consoles started off, their games were still around the $29-49 price range. It wasn't until the Xbox 360 and PS3 era that a $60 price tag became the norm.

I remember as a kid in Canada in the 90s it was $60 for a game, now it's $80. $60 adjusted for inflation is around $95. NES games were $50, which would be $120 today. The Atari 2600 cost about $800 for the console when adjusted, games were between $60-$120. Imagine paying close to $1000 to play Pong on a 15 inch black and white TV, that's how bored people were back then.

$60 is still too expensive imo, at least for single player games with campaigns that only last a few hours. I can't really justify paying $60 bucks for that, especially when it's a digital copy with zero distribution and production cost. At $20-$30 there would be a ton of games I'd consider buying. And for the record, it's not that I don't have the money, I live in a developed country with average hourly wage of $20-$40, it's really all about the value. I'd rather go to the cinema five times or go out for food and a couple of beers two nights, than to pay $60 for Far Cry Primal or $40 for RE7.
@MrAustyn88
@MrAustyn88 6 жыл бұрын
BudgeThePutcher Games can also have 300 hours of gameplay, which is equal to $.50 per hour of entertainment. And if a game is $60 and not worth it, people won't buy it and they will drop the price. The point is, most games will sell at least a few copies at $60, just like a few cars will sell as maximum price, regardless of quality. Also, if Primal is equal in length to other Farcry games, you will certainly get more hours of entertainment than 5 movies. And if you don't, then it just isn't the game for you. But someone else will get 50 hours out of it, easily, making paying $60 well worth it in my opinion
@oyuyuy
@oyuyuy 6 жыл бұрын
*60/300=$0.2/hr. However, most single player games range between 8-24hrs of content(source: polls on howlongtobeat.com). Maybe I'm not the typical gamer, but I would chew through that in a weekend or two and a week after that I would have forgotten I had the game altogether. The main point though, is that I think other experiences are typically higher quality of entertainment than what can be achieved in front of a computer or TV. Thus, a simple $/hr calculation isn't fair imo. I also can't help but to compare it to multiplayer games like Fifa, Dota, CS:GO and PUBG which offers nearly infinite game longevity for the same money or less.
@MrAustyn88
@MrAustyn88 6 жыл бұрын
BudgeThePutcher Yeah, I don't know why I divided 300/60. But even if other sources are higher quality than video games, which is highly debatable and varies based on the game and the alternative activity, the alternative activity is typically way more expensive. I don't buy shitty games that offer 10 hours of content. Some people might, and that is why the games start out at $60; supply and demand. If you are a gamer who values gaming (the type of person willing to pay $60 for a game you really want), you will typically know what games you can best get your value from. And there are more and more "gamers" every year, and most are willing to pay $60. I don't think going out to the cinema is worth it unless I go in the morning when it is $5.18 a ticket near me :P I am quite frugal, though. I don't think the cost/time argument is unfair. I expect the game that you purchase and buy is something you will enjoy very much. Hell, Fortnite is free and people have way more fun for free than going out and seeing "Solo: A Star Wars Story". A smile is a smile to me. Obviously going out and dancing with ny girlfriend is higher quality entertainment than playing a video game, but those are two completely different things for different times

Well now it can stay $60 for a while now going forward thanks to the popularity of going digital. Publishers are making more profit thanks to digital since it eliminates the cost of returns, stocking at retailers and making plus shipping out physical games. Now Publishers save $26. So the make 27+26=$53 in profit per game sold to consumer.
@antdok9573
@antdok9573 2 жыл бұрын
I would argue that is not a great enough of a factor to help. The main cost saving method is developers being efficient at creating cost effective tools for game design. However they also get very derivative games and sequels as a result. Im at least talking from the perspective of a game dev that is more corporate, which your initial point of going digital makes a lot more sense with...
@bennyhannasd
@bennyhannasd 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry dude, but you are just wrong. The price points for games was as follows in dollars of the day: Atari 2600: $15 when it was hot, $3-5 during the crash NES: $40 MSRP with games often discounted to $20 by retailers SNES/Genesis: $40 to $80, depending on how big the ROM was, FF2, Phantasy Star 4 and FF3 and RPGs in general were quite pricey due to their size at that time CD and DVD based games (Saturn, PS1, Dreamcast, Xbox): $40 More recently games have crept up to $60 due to the collusion and price fixing you indicate, but that is actually illegal and may get the publishers in trouble if they are actually doing that (Nintendo and EA have already been penalized by the US government for price fixing from what I remember) Greedy publishers are trying to suck as much cash out of their customers as possible, but the reality is that the video game market is huge ($108,000M in 2017 vs $100M in 1985), and with disc based games, the cost to produce a copy is only a dollar or two, a few cents for digital downloads, versus up to half the register price or more back in the cartridge days. For example, the Gears of War franchise has sold 27M copies and made over $1,000M in sales. Total development for the franchise was about $90M. Thus, on that one IP, MS made $410M as the publisher and another $100M on platform licensing in pure profit (ignoring the sales through XBL, which also nets MS the retailer cut). The reality is that once a game makes back it's development and advertising costs, it is 90% plus pure profit, and boy do the publishers profit. And we are not even talking about microtransactions yet. Fortnite cost under $1M with a barebones team working on it off and on for a number of years, but it has made developer Epic over $1000M in less than 10 months. Sure, they have probably sunk another $10M into the game in that timespan, but we are still in the 10,000% profit margin range. No other business on the planet short of armed robbery nets that kind of profit margin. Most of the profits from these games goes down the publisher rat hole, either paid out to investors or sucked up by the army of corporate types working at the publisher who serve no purpose other than to crush creativity and homogenize games. One of the great things about Steam is that they have largely circumvented at least the big publishers and allow much more of the cash from sales to come back to the developers. If game developers and the people who worked for them were smart, they would go the way of the MPAA and the guilds around making movies, collectively forcing publishers to force better working conditions and more fairly distribute the revenue from game sales to those actually creating the content. Everyone who significantly contributed to create the Gears series, Fortnite and all the other blockbusters should all be millionaires, still leaving room for the publishers to make several hundred percent return on their investment.

That gamer market's gonna saturate eventually since gaming is now mainstream. The fixed price also goes a long way to explain why so many big publishers release their games more barebones today. we're 2/3rds american currency so yeah thats why, it'd equal out too $60, and a little lesson for ya about the exchange rate, just because a country's currency is cheaper than another country, doesnt mean the cheaper country makes less, or has less, or contributes less.... its just how much inflation has taken effect, hence why a pop costed 5 cents 80 some odd years ago lol the only benefit of having higher denominations in our currency is more complicated math is used in our daily life, id rather make 50 cents an hour and pay 10 cents for a loaf of bread then 20 dollars an hour and 4 dollars for a loaf of bread. inflation and fiat money is bad and unstable but... it doesnt make a difference between us in the free world. im making 14 dollars an hour in american currency at $21 canadian and roughly have a thousand or so a month too do whatever with after all my shit is paid. i live comfortably as would most americans making 14 an hour, and i work less than 40 hours a week (optional, no shortage i could work up to 50 hours a week if i wanted) so i have a lot of free time too enjoy my earnings. if it was worthless, it wouldn't be like that, now would it?

I bought many games starting in 1992 when I got my first Nintendo, it's true they all had different prices back then, I recall seeing numerous games that cost more or less by about $30 in my local K-mart. But I never saw any that cost $100, including the super mario 3 for the NES, which was one I really wanted, but couldn't afford new. (That yellow box taunted me.) I believe it was around $70, but that was 25ish years ago. I mostly had to stick with used NES games that were $10 each. Slightly off-topic, I REALLY regret not buying the 30+ sealed copies of megaman 6 for $10 each at a KB toys as a kid, those are worth about 2 grand each now, for $300 I could have bought a house today.

The creator of this video fails to mention one essential thing, the difference in games economy and the economy of other products. If you are selling a physical product, such as a burger for example there is a small absolute cost in developing the recipe, getting the tools needed which are also more of an absolute cost with a small quantitative cost due to wear and the cost for the materials which is usually a significant one. Games are software products which can be very easily be replicated with minimal costs so selling 1 copy or 100 million copies would have a neglect-able distribution cost. Instead the bulk of the cost is in making the game, which is an absolute price. So you pay 20 or 200 million upfront and then you need to make that money back by selling as many copies as possible at a highest price as possible. So you need to find the optimal relation between quantity and price in order to maximize profits. Due to the fact that the number of gamers has increased exponentially since the 90's that means you can sell to way more people at a lower price than before and still make a nice profit. There is also a lot of pressure on the price due to a significant increase in competitors since the 90's on the same market, especially from the free-to-play and freemium market.

Here in Australia, games usually cost 100 or more dollars here. However, as a kid, there was never a set price until a few years back in the early 10s. Before you could get an Ratchet and Clank game for 30-40 dollars and then maybe your "party game" like Mario party or TV show game for like 20 dollars or cheaper. Best part were the sells when sometimes games would be as low as 15 dollars.

a very nutshell video. You could've gone into the price of 8 and 16 bit game carts causing a much higher price of $80+, the awesome drop in price to $49.99 for PS1 games even tho the CD had much larger storage capacity than n64 carts. Then the rise to $59.99 in 2006 for the PS3 gen. Oh and Indie games costing much less, indie physical games costing more than digital/ AAA digital and physical releases costing the same, etc. I really like you showed how the $60 price was divided up to the publisher, distribution, etc. I'd like to see more videos like this!

Quinn Sinclair Hi Quinn it's nice to meet you, and my name is John. I really think it's because the "age of technology" has evolved and because a game is on a new system we have to have the understanding that it is on a new system and shell out the money for it. What's even stupider is when they release a game under a special edition tag and charge 80 or 90 for it, you buy the game and there's little content on there for it warranting the special edition tag.
@quinnsinclair7028

John B aka Smooth Chocolate A standard game costs 79.99 which is just under 90 with tax. The only way it’s cheaper than that is if it is a third party game or isn’t selling very well as for example the LA Noir switch port which was 59.99 to the Switch’s usual 79.99. Most of the time special editions cost more like 109.99. Besides that though the video seems to be maintaining that video game prices haven’t gone up in the last ten years compared to other merchandise when they most definitely have.

ditto the digital content is to give publishers more money because the $60 price tag isn't enough to turn a reasonable profit. The price of new games hasn't changed since the 00s but the value of pretty much any currency has fallen. Not to mention that development costs have also skyrocketed, especially for today's gaming environment where longer more immersive games are pretty much a must. By today's standards games should be like $80+ (with no additional spending). But no one wants to do that, it'd pretty much be suicide. So it's us, the consumer, who has accidentally voted with the all mighty wallet for digital content.
@DaDARKPass

sir, what he mean was buying games digitally. also, games should not cost $80. $60 is already too much money spent of AAA games, which a lot of them aren't that good anymore. by the way, nintendo sold cardboard for $80. yes, the cardboard did sort off gave something but seriously. cardboard is worth more than a game with a lot of content that can last for years

Actually, any assertion about price not increasing with inflation assumes both real wage growth and that the technology used to create the games hasn't seen improvement and so gotten cheaper (i.e. why don't home computers still cost $10k... shouldn't they cost MORE with inflation!?). Not assumptions I'd be confident in staking my position on. THEN reduce the distribution and returns component. In stark contrast to all of this, the Sega Genesis released for $189US in 1989. That would be $382 today ($360 in 2014). The Xbox One released for $500 in 2014...

Games haven't always been "$60". I don't know when this myth got started, but it's false. I distinctly remember new games for console being about $50 in the PS2/GC era, with GBA titles usually being about $40. While games were roughly that price or higher in the past, the switch to disk-based media caused a massive decrease in the price. Something that people also overlook is that the vast majority of a AAA game's budget is in marketing and graphics. It's not that game companies need to stuff every game with microtransactions, DLC, and season passes, it's that it increases margins on something the game company has already ensured is in the hands of millions and millions of people. Only the biggest budget games actually need those things to turn a profit, and even then, most of that budget is pissed away on Mountain Dewritos plugs, buying reviews from game journos, and running nonstop ads in dying media.

I disagree. Haven't you noticed that the games pulling these Mountain Dewritos plugs, the Season Passes, the Fee-to-Pay stuff... haven't you noticed that it always seems to be the really huge media sensations doing it? Things like Shadow of War, Call of Duty, Star Wars Battlefront 2... games which are GUARANTEED to double, triple, quadruple or even more their investment - even if absolutely every single person who bought it paid only the $60 at a retailer and never paid a single cent on DLC or microtransactions, and even when you factor in the obscene amounts spent on marketing? They don't NEED these things to turn a profit. They never have. They WANT these things. It's greed, not need.

ozmoz01 I would argue that Arizona has innovated but in different ways, such as using cheaper (not necessarily worse) ingredients and flavorings. (soft) drinks themselves are also pretty cheap to produce and sell at a great profit margin, like with fountain sodas, and for stuff like water the price is for convenience and the container. I think they're better off taking the slight loss of inflation to keep their reputation of being a 1 dollar drink. It's easy to make good tea or fruit drink in large amounts for cheap but it's a pain in the ass to do it every time you want something sweet tea or fruit flavored.
