There's only one problem with this video and it is that landing on the "go" space does in fact mean that you get double the money ($400). Here's the excerpt from the rules: If the player lands on or passes Go in the course of his or her turn, he or she receives $200 from the Bank. A player has until the beginning of his or her next turn to collect this money. If a player lands on go then the money collected is doubled.

Yep, you're exactly right. It's actually a strategy to stay in jail as long as you can later in the game, so you're safe from paying rent like you mentioned. This is probably why they give you a maximum of 3 turns in jail before you are forced to pay bail and get out.

It's due to the terrible house rules. The tax is there to reduce the money in the game, which significantly speeds up the game. People usually start with too much starting money. We used to played without auctions, when I was a kid, so you had to land on property to buy it and you could only build houses on your set if you landed on one of those streets again. With these rules you usually had to pass go 3-4 times before the game got kind of interesting.

@aBoogivogi6 жыл бұрын
Not really. You have so much starting money that the actual chance of buying the street you need via auction is very unlikely. Usually you end up with a stalemate or the incredibly slow death of one player followed by a sprint for property and another period of stagnation or slow death. This is why professional monopoly is horseshit. Yes there is strategy here but the luck of the dice is still far more relevant for your success rate.
@DanielSong396 жыл бұрын
Reduce the starting money to $1200 and things get more interesting.
@SLOBeachboy6 жыл бұрын
aBoogivogi - Actually Monopoly is very much a game of skill when played by the rules, and I have always played strictly by the rules, even as a child. It is not luck that I have not lost a single game of Monopoly in over 45 years, its skill. In fact, I once took over for a friend who was loosing badly and, not only did I come back from behind, but I completely wiped out the other players in less than an hour. Obviously there is a degree of chance involved in Monopoly, just as there is in Poker, but in both of these games the most skilled players will always come out on top.
@aBoogivogi6 жыл бұрын
If your definition of a skill based game is poker then yeah I understand why you would think this makes monopoly skill based. Don't get me wrong there are skills involved in poker, but at the end of the day luck is still more important. Sure you can still win by bluffing now and then, but in the long run luck of the draw will win every time. Naturally playing on the kitchen table with a few friends and shuffling by hand with a single deck is wildly different. At the end of the day a dice game where you have very little control of the flow of the game aside from rolling a dice will never be particularly skill based. There is no long term strategy that ensures your revenue it's all down to the roll of the dice of other players. Heck when getting put in jail is a viable mid to late game strategy something is fucking wrong with your game.

However it made the game more desirable to play as I never really enjoyed playing monopoly much before since it took too long to play.

People only read the rules they were unsure about. As the youngest player, I never read the rules because it would only lead to ridicule because the older players always "knew" the rules. Like you I never enjoyed the game, and agree that these rules are better. But then... any rule that makes the game faster is an improvement. For us the rule is that the game is not allowed to take up space in our house. Speeds things up immensely.

Seriously, in a game about the danger of capitalism, why would free parking welfare ever be a thing?
@DillonHinx8 жыл бұрын
As an aside for anyone looking to expedite the game further, simply give each player 2 500s and 5 100s at the beginning instead of counting out all the small bills. It equals 1500 either way.
@JessCoolThings8 жыл бұрын
Dillon Hinkley While you are correct, the assorted money makes paying rent a lot easier than if you only have large bills. so in reality, this would make it take longer than simply giving 5 ones, 5 gives, 5 tens, 6 twenties, 2 fifties, 5 hundreds, and 1 five hundres as you would then be trying to deal with separating the money and distributing it then after breaking the large bill.
@DillonHinx8 жыл бұрын
Jessica von Dauv I actually have considered this. You may very well be correct but I wonder if it depends on other variables like the competency of the banker, the number of players, or anything else. I honestly think that the breakdown could be adjusted to account for these variables but haven't delved far enough into it to actually experiment. I usually just tend to the instant gratification of the people I play with by avoiding lengthy setup time.
@JessCoolThings8 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, I don't use physical money in game but then again, most people would have coded a banking system so that it is one click for go and paying the other player, etc. All before the first "electronic banking" came out haha.
@DillonHinx8 жыл бұрын
Heh, the last set my family purchased was the special edition in the 90s with the wooden houses and hotels. I honestly completely forgot that newer versions simply run electronically. Without checking I'll even assume there's a Monopoly app available.

Sure, who doesn't? The strange thing is that Monopoly, a game that is deliberately boring and long-winded (since it was originally created as a warning about the evils of capitalism) has, somehow, collectively accumulated house rules that makes it even more boring and long-winded.

Nothing should happen. It is however a rather valuable spot to land when there are houses built all around and serves as a good moment to chill out. The oranges are very popular and getting past them is massive. Course if you can roll 10 the hard ways or 6-4 then jail after is vital too! If we are playing for real money at home, we tend to agree on fines and taxes going into middle and free parking triggering pay-out. Can be a bit of a blue shell effect!

0:55 This is the rules from a card game called Monopoly Deal. It is the most chaotic card game I have ever played, especially with 3-4 players. You can be winning the game on your turn, and by the time your next turn comes along you are in last place because everything got stolen. If you have the right cards and know how to use them, you can bounce back on that turn. I still have no viable strategy to ensure a win. Someone just gets the right cards in hand and takes what he needs to win. Game over just like that.

I've always found Free Parking to be a wasted space in terms of design, but there's never been an official version where anything happens there. Go figure.
@Rekko828 жыл бұрын
therealbahamut I made one rule once: Instead of getting money while passing the starting point, you lose money. So basically you don't get 200 dollars, you lose 200 dollars. It can be quite much if you also have to pay 200 taxes (tax space) Well, I have the Finnish version, so they are not similar to English version. We have different names with the streets for example.
@gregtamnel05768 жыл бұрын
It's like this: late in the game, when most (if not all) of the spaces are owned, sometimes with expensive houses and hotels, the free parking space becomes a godsend simply because it's a space you can land in that's *guaranteed* not to cost you anything. This is a big deal at this point.

Watching this vid 6y later is pretty amusing. I found Simon's myriad of channels in 2020 when COVID kicked off the WFH revolution, and he's been a significant feature of my workdays ever since. He's really grown and developed his craft so much just in those 3 years, it's kind of adorable to look back even farther to see him back then.
