Thokoza gogo. This topic hit home. I'm suffering the perils of using the wrong surname and it has challenged my life in so many ways. I am glad that there are ways to circumnavigate that, which I'm tending too. It has been a roller coaster ride and I pray that one day that the "umbango" the clash of the ancestors will soon cease. Thokoza Gogo, thank you for such an insightful and important subject that touches our identity. I grew up using my mother's surname (Vilakazi) because I was brought up there. Fortunately, when my father was still alive - the traditional ceremony of introducing us to my father's side was done. Both my grandparents, from my mother's side, gave their blessing for it to be done. In fact, my grandmother encouraged it to be done while she was still alive. The house (home) that I have built for my mother and siblings is now known as the KwaButhelezi home, my father's surname. Now here is the tricky part, Gogo - I would like to change the surname in my ID book from my mother's side (Vilakazi) to my father's surname (Buthelezi) before I get married so that my wife and kids can use my father's surname. The problem is, I am known both in business and academia world with my mother's surname, Vilakazi. Is it a problem to go through a hassle of changing the surname in the ID or should I leave it like that and carry on using my mother's surname (Vilakazi) while my wife and kids use my father's surname, Buthelezi?

Makhosi, it is quite likely. What you need to do is check in with your kids and with the families and with your spirit for the truth. This is such a common issue that arises, what you don't want is to make a decision in haste that will be regretted in future. Consult with your elders and proceed with a consciousness of the gravity of your situation.

Mom and dad got married at a young age, while ma was still in school. They did everything culturally, ilobola nemisebenzi . Dad passed away and then my mom got remarried in court, her husband insisted that we all use his surname. Thokoza Here is ma story, my mother is not using his biological surname, that is because his father was not using his paternal surname too but he was using his maternal surname. My father is also not using his biological surname, but his uncle surname, that is because he never met his father. I met ma father last year on the 24 December 2018, that means that I personally had to use my mother's surname of which is also not her surname looking at how she got the surname. Camagu Makhosi, this is so interesting. I have been using my mother's surname because she and my father were not married but my father's family did imbeleko for me. Earlier this even I was talking with my mother and she asked if I don't want to change my surname to my dad's family, or my step father's because he's the one who brought me up and has been in my life since I was a year old. I felt very conflicted because I wondered how my step father would feel about me taking my biological father's surname when he's done so much for me, and I know how much this would mean to him. So I was left very conflicted. I did a midnight candle prayer for the first time tonight and after that I came to KZbin and that's when I saw this video. It seems like surnames didn’t exist during Shaka’s time... so what did they do during Shaka’s time? For example: Osama Bin Laden does not have a surname. Bin Laden is not a surname, it's a dynamic last name. "Bin Laden" translates to "of Laden" or "son of Laden". Surnames are a European construct that's somehow become the foundation of African spirituality. Very worrying and confusing. Europeans themselves did not always have surnames, they invented them for tax purposes.
