I've been considering changing my name for a while now and I'm trying to find one that feels right to me and defines me better as a person and means something to me. And I cannot tell you how good it feels to hear other people share their own stories. I don't really relate to my name at all, it was just the name given to me by my parents. I don't mind being called by my name by others but I feel no confidence in saying it out to people and announcing it as my name. It's almost like I was given the wrong name. I don't relate to it much like someone who doesn't relate to their assigned gender at birth. It just feels wrong, like it is not the identity I want for myself. I'm just going to go through the process of finding a new name that feels right to me and I'll see how it goes. I don't know if I will go through with it, but I want to at least go through the process and see if I really want to change it or if it's just a phase.

Amazing comment. I feel the same way as you did. Thankfully I was confident enough to change my name which I wanted to do for a long time and successfully completed it last year! Depending on the country you live in, for example, the UK or Canada, there are legal ways to change your name legally and it's possible. Think about what your new name is going to be, make a decision because you will be that fresh new person on your new name for the rest of your life.

I've legally changed my name, the people from my past don't know about it as I've cut them out of my life. The situation I was in, I had no choice, for my peace, safety and freedom, I legally had to change my name. Being honest, I never liked my old name, and my current legal name is one I like to think the universe gave me. When I hear my old name or meet people with that name I'm reminded of the old me, the past version of myself or factors behind why I had to change my name. I've made peace with why I had to change my name, and there's people out there who still go by my old name. For a while, I wanted to hide it, but I'm now accepting that I shouldn't hide from my past. I don't feel bad or triggered when I hear my old name, I know my truth and why I had to do it

Ik what u mean. Whenever i say my name or especially when i write it, its just feels wrong like it isnt me. However the name i want always has felt like me so once im finished with secondary school im gunna change it for colledge. My parents advised me not to change it officially tho cus we'd have to change my gcses and passports and stuff. So im just gunna change it for colledge. I am a bit nervous tho cus like i will still know some ppl there that went to my school or my previous school, but i know I'd regret it more if i didnt change my name just cus im scared of other ppls reaction. I'm not non binary even tho my new name is gender neutral, tho im still perfectly fine with non binary ppl, but ik there will still be ppl who will think differently of me and think i am non binary cus a lot of ppl still are transphobic to non binary ppl. The other concern is getting used to the name. My family has always called my new name as a nickname anyway, so im kinda used to it. However, im still nervous of not recognising it. I told my parents but they forget a lot of the time. I told my sister tho and she hasnt not once called me my original name, and that always makes me happy. I have also told my friends, i do have to keep telling my friends but i hate doing so cus everytime they act as if theyve lost me cus they always call me by a shortend version of my old name. They sometimes joke about it (not in a mean way) they just think that im not that serious or wont actually do it. Idk, hopefully they'll get used to if i change it in colledge tho. I sent my colledge application a month ago, i forgot if their was the option to change name, if they're was ik i would've definitely changed my name, but if not ill just ask to change it. Im quite a bit of an anxious person so i dont know if im just making my life harder, but hopefully ill get to a place where my new name is my name and i won't have to think about it. Anyway, sorry for the long message, i just needed to write this all down. Thanks for reading

This is really helpful for me. Today I had a bit of a breakdown because I was wondering why I felt so much better by being called my preferred name vs my current name. I’ve gone by D, my preferred name, for four and a half years now and that’s almost 1/3 of my life. My parents were talking about it though and they didn’t understand why I changed it. Ended up getting incredibly upset with the conversation and now I’m having a bit of an identity crisis because I’m unsure why I feel such a burden of being called my old name. I just don’t like being called it because it doesn’t feel like me. I can’t tell if that’s a good enough reason. Do I need a reason other than that? I don’t want to be called my old name. I want to legally change it. I’m not old enough though and I can’t without parental permission. I never liked my old name as a kid and as soon as I entered middle school, I started going by D instead. I chose that because my friend called me DD. My old name also started with the letter. If anyone has advice or anything, I’d really appreciate it. I’m sorry for ranting.

I wanted to say something else, but I just couldn’t. I sat on the floor and almost started crying at how wrong it felt to me. I couldn’t relate to the name whatsoever. And I still can’t. But when he finally found his father and faced him, he realised he did it to toughen him, build his character up. If you haven't heard the song, go listen to it! my birth name is Alaina, but it doesn't fit and i really want to change it to Parker but i haven't talked to my parents. it's really weird when it's not a transition or other gender change, but my moms cousin changed her name from Kaylee to Violet and if she can do it then i can :)

I'm about to change my last name because my mother didn't know who my father was so I got the last name of the guy she was with and they split when I was three and he wasn't around and an alcoholic. I have to begin my own lineage.

my name is beatriz, but i wanna change my name to coco. it is a simple name but it has a meaning behind it. Both of my parents would call me "bebe koko" which is in tagalog. bebe meaning baby and koko, "ko" means my. so the literal name would be mymy baby. but to me it meant that I was their kid and I would always would be theirs.

I changed my name too. When I was born, my parents gave me the name Yoanna, which means God-anointed, and I was named after Queen Yoanna of Bulgaria .But due to bad memories with this name (bad relationship with my parents, bullying at school) I changed it to Yana which means river.

I want to change my name from Ava to bee, there has been so much trauma and hurt to the name Ava it never suited me and I’ve wanted to change it for years but I’ve only started talking about it over the past 2 years, another reason is that I was named by a person who has no right to be in my life anymore and who I would love to forget about. I have no reason why I have typed this out but yeah

You're not the only one who is experiencing the same situation as I was during my young life. Thanks to the UK law you can legally change your name through deed poll, whether you live in the UK or abroad. For abroad you must be a UK citizen, and residents of the UK with overseas citizenship, must check and comply with their country's rules and regulations on name change. Otherwise there's no harm in it! Best to change your name as you described your situation as I did. 😊

This is a weird reason but I swapped my first name and my second name because I always stutterd with my first name and it gave me social anxiety so I just avoided people to avoid the embarrassment and I just couldn't do it anymore so my first name is now my second name😂

Julian Lennon did similar. Born John Charles Julian Lennon, he went to court in 2020 to get the names reversed to Julian Charles John Lennon. Ever since I learned of that, I've considered doing similar to my 1st & middle names, the latter of which I've gone by forever.

I've been wanting to change my name, I don't know what too but I still want to keep my current name and have two middle names. My current name is Bria, and I love the name and it's also a family name, my great grandma's maiden name was Bria and I still want to keep it. (also Bria is my first name.) I just want to relate to my name personally, not because I'm changing genders or something.

I've heard of one gal whose original name was Nancy Rae, but she went by Rae & was about to become a physical therapist, so she resorted to a legal name change to simplify the licensure process. I have heard of people of the past who went by names like F. Scott Fitzgerald & L. Tom Perry, but most computer systems today do not accommodate such formatting of names.

I just wanted to tell my story because ı feel so insecure abput it. So my parents gave me a male name and they didn't even know that its a male name. Growing up ı feel so bad because everyone ı know made fun of me or judge me or make me feel bad about myself. Every person that ı met think that they have right to make fun of me in the first place and ı am so sick of explaining myself. Even the first guy ı went on a date with has my name as a middle name. So ı decided to change my name . But right now ı am having mental personality crisis. I feel like ı dont know myself . Because again ı have to explain myself to people and ı hate that ı just hate it. I feel so bad

God has put a personal calling on my life to be born again in Jesus Christ. My new identity (grounded in Jesus Christ) is Adam. My old name was Riley, sure it’s still my legal first name but I’m hoping to go through the legal process of changing it one day. I have faced judgement from family members and old friends but I don’t care because God has given me a new purpose and wants me to stand out for his glory.

I’ve been wanting to changing my name since I learned how to talk. My name is Chantal (not going to say my last name so I changed it to the name I want) and I prefer to go by Annabelle Melrose. I told everyone on Facebook and social media and I’ve been going by Annabelle. But close family. I haven’t talked to them about the change in my identity. They still call me Chantal but I noticed that my aunt and my uncle is accepting so I’m happy. My sisters are totally supportive but they still call me Chantal. It just. I can’t change that. I’m Chantal with them. But now. I’m Annabelle to myself and to everyone else. My ex best friend didn’t like the change. That’s why we’re ex best friends. I supported her and I realize that she won’t put any effort in our friendship so I kinda distant myself. Now we don’t talk anymore. My current best friend is actually my step brother. His father is with my birth mom. Don’t know what’s going on with that but to us. We still consider family. We’ve been family since 2015 so he know who I am and I know him. We just never got to know each other because of the way we lived our lives. But the traumas we experienced helped us bond and become close. It was so good to have a friend in the family like him in my life. And I’m so happy to call him my best friend. Also, he knows that I don’t like to called Chantal and the name I used to go by for about half a decade didn’t seems like a good name for me. We wanted a name that’ll make me seems more like me. I’m a elegant, shy, quiet person who has a hint of destruction. I’m also very adventurous and a daydreamer. So Annabelle Melrose was born. I picked Melrose because I wanted to keep my last name initial the same but also make it more beautiful. My favourite flower is rose. I know. Cheesy. But yeah. I picked Melrose. Picking the name Annabelle was hard, because I wanted to have a name that I can pronounce. And I always loved the word Anna so I asked, “what about Anna?” He looked at me and said that it’s too modern so I asked, “Annabelle?” He loved it. And I added, “I like to go by Annabelle, Annie, Anne, or Anna.” Even now. I’m still happy with my new name. I even might add “Belle, and Bella.” lol
