Thanks for having me on Emily! That was fun. For those curious there's one tidbit about BBDs vs digital systems which is really special. BBDs are sort of in the middle of analog and digital. The signal in a BBD isn't quantized in amplitude, but it is sampled. Changing that sample rate changes the delay time. Fast sample rate = short delay, slow sample rate = long delay. For digital systems, signals are quantized in both time and amplitude and it's common to change the delay time by setting the length of a memory buffer. When you're making a chorus, vibrato, flanger, or other effects based on modulating the time of a delay line, you run into this concept called "fractional delay." This means basically delaying for less than one sample, which you need to do if you want a smooth change of sample rates or delay times. This is really hard to do unless you can change the clock in steps of less than a billionth of a second! It's also possible if you do some sophisticated DSP trickery (google "subsample interpolation" for more). A BBD with an analog clock doesn't have to worry about this because the sample rate clock is continuously variable. So it's a lot easier to get very smooth, continuous modulation without a lot of complex hardware. TL;DR analog good, digital good too but it's harder to do right

For me the incredibly profound and important part is where you said "The stuff that is trying to get around that (the in perfections) but then contributes its on character" and "the sound of BBDs is the sound of all the stuff that you have to use to make them behave properly" BINGO!

Bucket Brigade delay and mods like chorus and flanger, can sound excellent, but they are also limited. I’ve owned enough analog and digital pedals, to know that there are digital ones that are just better. Then there’s the karaoke chips, that so many builders use. When done correctly, they sound great. I kept a BBD on my board for awhile. I also had a Boss DD-3, for the pristine delays, combining the two is where the great tones come. But, I replaced that analog delay, with the Caroline Guitar Company Kilobyte, because I just liked the sound better. It has more of an analog tape delay thing going, than a BBD sound. Now, we have builders coming up with these multi function, true stereo BBD delays. These usually have some type of digital control. There’s just so many great analog and digital pedals out there.

Really great review-and a great ‘history’ lesson on the development of the bucket brigade process and the great sound we all love . It is eye opening for me how these pedals and their amazing sounds are also all tied directly into the ‘history’ of electricity itself and how we have channeled what electricity does - from a simple incandescent bulb to a complex modern synthesizer ( or the hologram/ microcosm pedal etc ) and the crazy sounds . Your harp playing is beautiful as usual and shines through with or without all the effects ! 🙏

So many good bits in this one, loved the history lesson full of deep lore, and I had no idea that EAE was linked to Asheville and Asheville to Moog, but that makes so much sense and explains why they're all so good at taking the innate characteristics of analog component and building a tool around them. In a way, it matches with old recollections of fine stonecarvers who spoke of freeing the sculpture out of the natural rock instead of breaking a rock until it was the shape they wanted. When I was a sophomore, junior and senior in high school, my only classes were music theory, and recording studio. I had full run of the famous Hillsboro High School Recording Studio with Vic Gabani as my teacher in studio, and Bobby Gene Frost as our cig smoking music theory teacher. If I had the money, I would never open my daw again; I would just use all analog equipment for recording, including pedals instead of plugins. One of the main reasons is latency in daws, but also, as Jimmy Church once stated, "Here is a high hat in digital - 'Tss', here is a high hat in analog - 'Tsssssssss'. He's right; much better, deeper sound. Use analog whenever you can!

This is interesting to me because I’m a harmonica player,and I know that most pedals are EQ’d for guitars. Most pedals end up being way too hot in the high mids for harpoon(yes, we do call it that), resulting in ear shattering tone. I like hear how a different instrument works with all the stompers out there. There are some very good digital emulations of analog effects, but, especially with delay, the ol’ bucket brigade pedals have that degrading fidelity built in that makes them so niiiiiice.

I enjoyed the tribute to stings fields of barley with the two analogers stacked. Since you're getting so into BBD you should check into pastfx and Verlie reviving the buffalo fx reticon flanger along with many other Panasonic mn3007 equipped builds that have a slicker and more sibilant frequency response than the cool audio chips used in similar devices. You also should look at the new Loke by Fjord Fuzz, that's some of the most amazing digital Delay and flanging I've heard, they made a very tape sounding program and I'm a chip snob but love it love it. Lastly I'll mention the 550-tt deluxe memory man, these usually can be found with Panasonic chips still and analogman does some nifty mods to allow better signal flow than the stock version and the ability to overclock the chips so the clock noise becomes overbearing but awesome. I have a video of the 550 if interested.

In Dave Hunter's book "Guitar Effects Pedals: The Practical Handbook", he has interviews with a number of prominent and well-respected designers/builders. One of them is effects legend Roger Mayer. One of the interesting things Mayer says is that the differences between digital and analog delays become most audible in the decay. His hypothesis is that, where the resolution of digital converters is fixed, and results in fewer bits being used to encode the soft fade-outs, analog sampling in BBDs is effectively infinite resolution, no matter how quiet and subtle the delay repeats may be, since what each bucket gets handed is the exact voltage of the signal at each sampled moment, not the nearest "rounded-off" value that the encoding recognizes. It is probably worth noting that, when the interview was recorded (published in 2013), 16-bit resolution, and 48khz sampling was the likely state of things, so the digital-vs-analog differences in soft passages may have been more audible, in comparison to current 24-bit/96khz technology. Still, an interesting proposition to account for why some folks prefer analog delay over digital. Of course, disentangling it from near-ideological faith in this or that technology is no easy task. Worth noting that earliest attempts at digital flanging were stymied by the inability to sweep very wide. My old blue rackmount MXR Digital Delay was able to flange, but it could only cover a 4:1 range of delay times. So, if you set it to the .63 msec range, it could sweep from around .36 msec (.63/2) to around just under 1.7 msec (.63 x 2). More impressive flanging generally requires a sweep range of at least 30:1 (e.g., .25 msec to 7.5msec). My analog PAiA Hyperflange will do 88:1 and the legendary A/DA Flanger has a 40:1 ratio. Not all analog flangers are that capable (Boss BF-2 is 13:1), but for many years, analog flangers kicked digital flangers' collective hineys. John is quite correct in noting that much of what makes analog BBD effects sound the way they do is a result of all the things you have to do to make them behave themselves. But it is not necessarily impossible to emulate all of that in the digital domain.
@electronicaudioexperiments
@electronicaudioexperiments Жыл бұрын
Mark, thanks so much for chiming in. I have enormous respect for your work and have read many of your articles over the years. I think Roger Mayer's hypothesis is spot on with low level behavior of early converters. You can see signs pointing to this with the nonlinearization/relinearization circuits found in early Lexicon units, or even the prevalence of companding systems in pedals like the old Digitech PDS series. That "hybrid" era sounds gorgeous. I think that as state space modeling continues to improve, emulating all the nonlinearities of filtering/companding behavior is absolutely possible in a DSP system. If you look at pedals like the Strymon Brigadier, I'd say it's already achieved in most respects. Not to mention whatever AI profiling is doing these days. (Though, that's pretty far from my core competency!) Digital clocking limitations are absolutely the biggest factor, IMO. My understanding is that, barring proprietary magic I'm not privy to, sub-sample interpolation is always going to sound different compared to true fractional delay with a continuously variable analog clock. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on that. The limitation is also applicable to BBD delays with a clock generated by a processor. The resolution of a typical hardware PWM peripheral is rather poor, and if you want exponential control of a clock frequency over a wide range it's going to take resolution on the order of hundreds of picoseconds to get a smooth sweep over several octaves.
@markhammer643
@markhammer643 Жыл бұрын
@@electronicaudioexperiments Well now you're talking well above my pay grade! But many thanks for the nod. Deeply appreciated. That said, we should be mindful of the quirks inherent to BBD-based effects, that are asked to operate in different delay-time ranges. Those itty-bitty capacitors in each stage will leak, as all caps do, so asking them to hang onto samples too long will likely result in an imperfect sample passed on to the next stage. Longer delay times CAN be achieved by use of multiple cascaded BBDs, such that samples can be passed along quickly enough to avoid that leakage IF you have lots and lots of stages. But for chorus and flanging, where we're talking only a tiny fraction of the delay time, those concerns don't apply. Equally, the filtering needed to reduce audible clock noise, when aiming for longer analog delay, imparts much of the "warmth" people associate with analog over digital. And while perhaps never deliberately intended to do so, it comes closer to the treble-eating qualities of real-world reflective surfaces than early digital delay did with its maximum bandwidth. Again, wet-bandwidth concerns tend not to apply in the context of ultra-short delay effects. Heck, the Electric Mistress and A/DA flangers had barely any lowpass filtering, because the clock was always operating at a frequency well above hearing range. In contrast, many delays will require clocks to slow down considerably, increasing the risk of audible clock noise, and the requirement for lots of filtering to *make* it inaudible.

Lovely stuff from lovely people. I will say though the one comment I noticed around these being simpler thus less pricey. While they're not at say EHX H90 multi effect territory, they're still in the "more premium / small batch" price range I'd say. Which given that small batch nature is expected. Not a gripe - just wanted to point it out for folks.

What is a bucket brigade ? Imagine you want to transfer water from source to destination (putting out a fire0 Get a line of people with buckets to pass the water along Imagine in your case it's sound that's passing along, but you can also sample that sound at any bucket or a mix of buckets to pass to the output, you get differing delays Also look into tape delay machines, like the 'copycat' The most basic delay is a long length of cables (there's video on this) Compare a digital delay with being in a big building that echoes (search 'tom scott echo' ) for a demo

I resonated with what John said about once you put a computer in there, it tends to bring with it more features and complexity. I run into the same thing with my synth module designs. Microcontrollers are so cheap these days that there's hardly anything that it makes sense to do without one. But it bothers me from an aesthetic standpoint when we use them for simple stuff. It's like using a multitool as a screwdriver. I won't deny the convenience of having a screwdriver in your pocket when you need it, but the experience is just... not as good. So when I build things, I like to design them for their specific purpose, and nothing more.

Have you ever experimented with a "prepared harp" style piece using the effects pedals? I think that would produce some interesting sounds for sure

I know zero about harps, so forgive the potential dumb question but does the color of some of the strings mean anything (notes, etc)?
@emilyharpist
@emilyharpist Жыл бұрын
that's a great question!! all of the red strings are C notes, and all of the black strings are F! they're color-coded in this way so that you know where your hands are landing while playing. harpists would get lost very easily otherwise!

So, I've been following for awhile, and you constantly talk about bit crushers. Even though I've been playing guitar for decades and have a modest collection to effect pedals, I've still never really heard of bit crushers outside of you. Can you do a video that kinda dives into that a bit?

So why does the afg-1 have airplane mode on the phase switch? That feature seems pretty niche...

I think the issue with demonstrating Analog devices, is similar to demonstrating the Vibrancy of a new color television ... the person hearing and seeing it, can only see/hear it thru the crappy TV they own, and thru the compressed audio of YT. Ultimately the warmth of Analog is almost always compressed down to digital these days, and isn't something someone can experience unless its played with Analog equipment or in a live event.

😄 Hi Emily & Co, I’m a visual artist, not musical, but love music and lived with musicians. I’m also a gen X, so grew up amongst analogue stuff and saw the transition to digital thru my teens. So I’m in that two worlds, where I can appreciate the hard sharp digital, as well as the warmth and soul of analogue. To me analogue amps etc feel alive. You can feel them warm up n hum. Where digital is just cold fact. When I practised fine art, I would try to push the medium, so as not to express it’s obvious traits. - screenprinting or wood cut printing can lack tonal fade or look blocky, so you’d work to mess with that. But sometimes you embrace what the medium delivers because it expresses what you want to say. 😄 …I have no answers or directions for you. ✊🏻 more you being you. p.s I saw a 1 second of your hair untied. I thought it looked good, relaxed. We may need a “release the hair - Wild Hair” clip, for fun.

I've had pedals (and keyboards) that I consider "aged out"...IE the decay of the transistor performance...? Granted, it takes (normally) decades, but the longer and frequency of device use seems to accelerate it slightly? When I first noticed this (early 2000's) I thought I was craZy (LOL 🤣😂👍), until I found some DOD & NASA papers discussing this phenomena? And mind you, our devices/effects DON'T have military/NASA grade components inside (they'd be HUGELY unprofitable AND unaffordable..) Moral? Don't be afraid to "freshen" up the signal path... (Dang aging, I guess it affects Everything? ROFL 😂😂) Love your channel, BTW..
