I remember a random relative saying to the 7-year old me 'your whole family is so fair. Tu itni kaali kaise hai (why are you so dark)?' and then laughing and passing it off as a half -joke. And I remember being surrounded by other relatives, none of whom stood up to her or said it wasn't okay. Imagine how normalised this is - making a seven year old feel like nothing for the colour of their skin.

The same people who believe dark skin isn’t beautiful glorify the beauty of Shri Krishna and Draupadi, but they don’t realise that Shri Krishna and Draupadi are dark skinned yet beautiful. Even in the Mahabharat TV serial, they’re played by fair skinned actors just because Indians prefer fair skin. I think this is really racist.

Banda reject ho raha hoga because usne interviews ache se nahi deye toh it was his friend's responsibility to atleast tell him ki you should focus on your interview more. Just wanted to share a story. I used to have fair skin as a child, my tone has gone slightly darker as I grew (not that I really cared about that) but my complexion is slightly lighter than my sister since she takes up after my father's genes. Recently we had met one of my father's relative after many years and the first thing he said was, "I remember you as a child because you were the fair skinned one." I'm like, WTF, the fact you remembered me only because of my skin color is not a compliment. Secondly, my sister was very cute as a child and frankly I felt insulted on her behalf. Why is the first defining feature of a child in your memory their skin color?

Why not cast an actress with darker skin tone? There are extraordinary actresses all over Tamil Nadu who can do that character. But instead they chose to put dark makeup on Samantha’s face. one reason I think is that almost every poor family (and most lower middle class) in india are having a darker skin color (because of their lifestyle and exposure to sun too) than usual....due to which "dark" skin color is considered inferior and "fair" people are considered somewhat rich.....due to which, to some extent even I want a partner that's fair in color.

Swaddle good on you for bringing up the topic on skin colour bias but a little more clarification on colourism would have been better. Also being blunt, I do find you guys a little hypocritical cuz none of your empowered women are dark skin representatives so you are still just implementing the token of topics to create a disillusioned and shallow portrait of progressiveness or let's say diversifying your videos. Bring in mOrE representation of darker skinned brown women in your videos. We WANT to see sun Tanned dark melanin women. South Indian or North East Indian doesn't matter. But just please stop being another "liberal" platform contributing to tokenism for viewers. Reflect change into your dynamics. So next time when we see a video on colourism I want to watch a melanin rich dark chocolate beauty speaking with confidence. Not some half baked cookie no offence ;) AND 👍👍👍

@@vatsalasaxena4725 well it is very much linked with the color coded system of division of labour. Lower castes did manual labour that means more hours under the sun and melanin soaking all that vitamin D giving u a brown skin tone. Upper castes and Brahmins stayed indoors and fed flowers to stone god's barring them from hard labour. Colourism is prevalent even in other Asian countries where there was stratifications of labour according to the clan or family you were born in. Philipines, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand barred girls or women to work outside if they belonged to a rich family and at that time you were either a rice farmer or royalty to not work. So, these people got lighter skin. Even in the US House slaves had a light Brown skin shade as they work d indoors. Sometimes their white rulers raped em and their offsprings had a mixed light brownish skin tone thag people hated upon. However due to Eurocentric beauty standards it is very accepted and "beautiful" now to have a light wheatish skin colour. Colorism is very intricately linked to social structures of caste and race that we still operate upon.

It's unfortunate that some people feel the need to hide their natural skin color with makeup due to societal pressures or personal insecurities. However, it's important to remember that every skin tone is beautiful and should be celebrated. Embracing and loving your natural skin color is an important step towards building self-confidence and promoting diversity. It's crucial to recognize that beauty comes in all shades, and it's important to value and appreciate the uniqueness of every individual. She looks so Beautiful....tbh u dnt even need a fairness cream jst use a sunscreen that's enough to protect the skin. In India most people are not wheatish white in color. We have mostly brown skin, so whats so bad loving our own natural skin tone and wanting to protect it Believe it or not the people who tells other to be fair are prejudiced against dark skin but the people questioning whats so wrong to get dark when others want to preserve their natural tone is also prejudiced. If I want to tan I can naturally buy a tanning cream. Also not just fairness cream but tanning cream has a huge market too. Just change the ppl who thinks dark is dirty or white is no bloodcell snake... every color stands for the environment and geography

Also, why I'm not seeing dark complexion people representing this channel, SheThePeopleTv, entertainment media, news media, vagerah, vagerah... Why?? At least people who are representing such crucial topics can reflect the same values as a normal part of their lives.

@@Sana-mb6ig I don't have anything against or even in favour of The Swaddle and other similar channels. I just convey my point of view being really truthful about it, thinking about it in its finest sense. I always go to the core of every mechanism. So, that's why you and many people see such comments which might seem offensive to some, and appreciated to others. Again, I really don't have anything against this channel or any other. I just want things to be represented in a purely authentic and genuine sense. These people might not have observed this, I am pointing out so more people would talk about this to this channel and others, so these channels will ACTUALLY reflect those same values and bring change.

@Impersonal Immigrant for a while I got confused... I see you're referencing my original comment in a different video. Yeah, she was sounding POWERFUL but her opinions and views were so pathetic. "Shut down girls in the confined spaces of home and celebrate women empowerment" is what it sounded to me.

If that is to happen, we are giving way to equality of outcome. That's stupid. Maybe just maybe, the skilled people they needed in their team happened to be fair or not dark.
@meettheartist5506

@@chaitanyagupta6668 that's a possibility. Don't worry. I thought of that exactly right after the moment I posted this comment. Hiring people on basis of colour might not be this channel's or any other channel's criteria, but why we aren't seeing such people is my concern. Also, when characters in movies or shows are of dark complexion, fair complexion people are hired who are already a part of entertainment industry. Examples - Bhumi Pednekar's character in movie "Bala", and Samantha Akkineni's character in web series "The Family Man Season 2". I do believe that going through an actual process of reviewing dark complexion people on the basis of their skills must be done for such projects. The demand for character is being fulfilled "visually" for creators, but the people (or artists) will be hired for their talents and skills. In that similar way, a deliberate attempt can be done by these people and other channels, i.e., posting for requirements of people with dark complexion representing their whole channel (and not just racial topics). If creators of this channel, movies, and shows acknowledge this as a normal thing and send out notice/post mentioning different characters' requirements, it will be a good thing. Suppose if I'm a filmmaker and I'm making a movie. My characters list says there's a fair complexion girl for the role of supporting character, but there's also a dark complexion girl's character for (let's say) the same fair complexion girl's sister or friend. There you have it! Making a deliberate attempt while creating a new mindset among people conveying that "yes, girl with dark complexion is a part of our movie's story and she has a significant contribution in leading the movie's story." There has been number and number of auditions for different projects but you'll hardly see any dark complexion girl (boys are still somewhat accepted being dark) in that project's audition. This should be reformed now. This will bring a new change which has practical outcomes in our real world. What you're seeing here on this channel and other channels is "equality of outcome" in its very own way. When these people talk about it, being a true icon for what they're saying, don't you think it's positively impacting you, and especially those who believe in what is being conveyed? Or a better example is when you see an inspiring celebrity or a personality who is true idol for you who is supporting equality. I'm taking a random example of "Sushmita Sen"... She has put efforts into her, her life and hence you're able to feel inspired for the change and growth. I will agree that neither Sushmita Sen nor any other such celebrities are putting efforts just to see change, in a realistic way, but think about the "outcome" of their "action/efforts". How are you supposed to change the mindset of millions of individuals, including those who are a victim of it (here, dark complexion people) without actually letting everyone of these people (people mocking and people being mocked) know that what reality they think doesn't exist, do exist, and we (this channel or whoever's doing this deliberate attempt) are the representatives of this reality. Long comment but I hope I made sense.

In matrimonial sites there are a lot of profiles who claim themselves to be fair and handsome or beautiful For many people, beauty is just in being fair. How can someone be beautiful just because one is fair? I now remember my grandfather who asked my parents to name me Shyama since i am dark skinned Such is the mindset within one's own family

If I had to rank the things that influence attractiveness is- 1. Freature of nose-hair-eyes. 2. Body type 3. Voice & the way you talk 4. Sociableness 5. Brighter skin color could add some points. But no way, skin color is the only parameter that defines beauty.

Thankfully lots of tamils girls who are brown and considered dusky dont live in india finally got away thank heavens as we dont gotta face this level of discrimination if we live away from people with this mentality that if you fair skinned, got a sharp nose and got pink glow pink lips you automatically get everything. In the west they like dark skin as long as its an even skintone. Everyone is aiming for even skintone. light skin people trying to lessen wrinkles and darker people trying lessen dark circles/pigmentation. And if your face is somewhat symmetical you will be ok. Here they put more emphasis on an even skintone, being a healthy weight, going for laser hair removal, growing long hair, ensuring the skin is healthy and body is also healthy. That you got hair removal less body hair through laser. Skin color does not have anything do with class lots of people here are very dark they have got plenty of money they are very successful. Being non-white is challenging sometimes. you got to work hard (cant be lazy some goras can be) but honestly there are laws etc heres so even if there is favouritism perks trinkets (yes they give non-whites who look more white/white people some what more) it is not that bad. No one cares this much sooo much about skin color. I wish more of my dusky girls move to the west and get the chance to get aways. Once you here and go for therapy you will heal lot Colorism is social engineering and conditioning. Its conditioning and conquered way of thinking. There seems be lack of education on skin color. All skintones are attractive. White light skin less prone to pigmentation dark circles but ages faster. Dark skin prone pigmentation and dark circles but ages slower. I understand this mindset isnt going go away in india as status driven though therapy (through councellor/therapist/psychologist), healing and education is the way wishing more scientists dermatologists in india talking about this. So many people around me are dark black dark brown got even skintone shines like velvet nothing wrong. Guy im seeing now is dark brown middle east guy nothings wrong with dark skin.

BUT THE STARTING OF THIS VIDEO IS VERY MISLEADING, DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT IN A DIVERSE COUNTRY LIKE IDIA ALL THE BHRAHMINS AND ALL THE SHUDRAS WILL ALWAYS BE WHITE AND BLACK C'MON PLEASE STOP THIS FALSE INFORMATION YOUR MOTIVE IS WISE AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO PUT A WHOLE CULTURE OR SOMETHING OR SOMEONE DOWN FOR THAT PLEASE RESEARCH WISELY AND UNBIASEDLY AND I REALLY APPRECIATE THE TOPICS THAT YOU CHOOSE . BY THE WAY WE HAVE MANY DARK SKINNED GOD AND THEY ARE WORSHIPPED WITH OUR WHOLE HEART . THE DIFFERENCE MAINLY CAME FROM COLONIALIZAION AND IS STILL EMBEDDED IN OUR BRAINS SADLY .
