Dude you got me CRACKING UP… but yeah I feel like people don’t realize that Whiplash is about the destructive power of obsessively pursuing greatness… it could literally be about any skill they just happened to choose drumming this time around just like Black Swan chose ballet

I went to jazz school for vocals, and after one of my performances, one of the profs told me in front of the audience that I “sounded like Norah Jones” and meant it as a scathing critique. These people are heathens, and they deserve their craft to be portrayed like this

its honestly infuriating how there's so many musicians out there that expect their hobby to be perfectly portrayed in every medium possible no matter how unecessary or redundant it is to do so, the music industry already struggles finding really good music players and you expect the people who act to also be proficient in music enough to be as good as Charlie Parker? they wouldnt be acting in the first place if they were, lol

Recent example Jenna Ortega spend like a year to practice 6 things to portray a character who is super skilled in fricking everything. Beyond that it is just too much effort to gain nothing from it. You can't except actors to learn the chello for 25 years, horse riding for 10 years, german for 40 years and who know what for another 100 years to play a 15 years old... so 0.00....0001% of the population can feel accurately represented. Making things ridiculusly accurate isnt the point of movie making.

as a aspiring jazz guitarist, this is still my favourite film i've ever seen, because even though there are some terminologies they get wrong and some minor editing details that don't sync up with the music, i don't give a fuck because THIS ISN'T ABOUT JAZZ, (but i still love all the jazz stuff in it), you've basically summed this up in the vid, so thank you, i will now show anyone who criticises whiplash's ever so slight misuse of jazz terms. also this was a very funny vid, I subscribbled, can't wait for part 2 ❤

as a jazz bassist, the movie was pretty good, but i think youre overreacting to adam neelys take on it. i think his video makes more sense if you go in considering that he didnt choose to watch it to watch a movie, he watched it because people online asked him to talk about how accurate it is to the real world. ironically, a lot of the video is made to be entertaining to people who *arent* jazz musicians. its just like the neil degrasse tyson thing in that its a guy in the field explaining the thing they do in a way that average people would be interested in. if he cut out all the nitpicks and technical explanations, it would be nothing and thered be no video. he wasnt looking to make a film review, he was looking to explain what is or isnt accurate about a film.

I think Adam Neely commenting on just how inaccurate whiplash is would be a lot more rediculous if people weren't so convinced that it was in any way accurate. I watched Hot Ones, with Thundercat being the guest, and one of the first questions was "You study jazz, right? Was it like Whiplash?" and it made me laugh so hard. You may as well bring in a member of the FBI and open by asking them if they can shoot lasers out of their watch like James Bond. Thundercat's response was just an awkward "Maybe for some people, but for me definitely no. Drummers are in their own world."

exactly, and i think that explains most of the video; he wasnt trying to review a movie, he was giving a technical rundown of its inaccuracies for people who arent already jazz musicians for their entertainment. he only made the video because he was asked if it was accurate to the real world

thank you so much for this, there is a known youtuber from the latin american community that talks about this movie, saying it's "50 shades of grey for musicians" because they wants you to support the abusive relationship of the protagonists, and that the director focused on that instead of making the movie about music, and that's why it's bad i know people can have different interpretations of media, but I had never seen a more pretentious critique of a movie in my whole life, and this video summed up the problem perfectly!

This video was hilarious. I can't tell if it was intentional, but that fact that this video managed to match the pedantic levels of the video being critiqued is hilarious. Both videos make good and valid points, and both videos completely miss what the source material was about because they get hyperfixated on aspects of the source that irked them. And both acknowledge that they're missing the point to some extent, and then continue on anyways. Made for a good laugh and an interesting look into a different perspective

@zeroth88
@zeroth88 Жыл бұрын
@@filipgasic2642 Once is a lot? Twice if you are lumping the single instance of miss with the single instance of missing. Snark aside, I was commenting on the fact that the original video's point was, "Hey, I get that Whiplash is a thriller that utilizes one individual's subjective view of Jazz as a set piece, but I disagree with the writer's view of Jazz and am going to intentionally ignore the point of Whiplash to obsessively critique how Jazz is presented within it because I view my subjective take on Jazz as superior." The point of the video was to be pedantic and nit pick things that generally didn't need to be nitpicked. It was self aware, and was meant to be arrogant. This video did the exact same thing. It acknowledged that the original video was intended to be an unnecessary, pedantic critique of a movie that intentionally missed the point in the process, and then proceeded to do the exact same thing by levelling subjective critique and nitpick at the original video at every possible moment, and the poster of this video seems to know that's exactly what he's doing. It made for good comedy, because the original video ignored the point of Whiplash intentionally, and this video ignored the point of the original video intentionally. I hope that clarified my point. Nothing was "missing" from the videos in a content sense. They both just intentionally missed the point of the subject of their critique, and it was entertaining

I think the influence of early KZbinrs who nit picked movies caused a lot of harm to reviews and film analysis in general. I cringe at micro analysis of media that don't look at the big picture of the film and what it is trying to accomplish. If Whiplash's target audience was jazz people it would have been very different, but that is imposing what an individual wants the movie to be instead of analyzing what the movie was trying to do.

this is one of the funniest videos I've seen lately. I agree that the guy in the other video was just too focused on how accurately the film portrays the jazz world while forgetting that realism isn't the most important aspect when it comes to storytelling. As Stanley Kubrick once put it: "yes, it's realistic, but is it interesting?". I would argue Whiplash is a great example of this. sometimes realism actually works against the art. Whiplash is about obsession, and whether the ends justify the means. The guy in the other video knows a lot about jazz but not a lot about cinema, so the weight he puts on certain aspects feels unbalanced to me. Obviously Whiplash was never aiming for realism with a character like Fletcher. If Fletcher was a real teacher, he would be immediately fired for physical assault, but having him portrayed this way sure made for a much more entertaining experience.

Jazz musicians are dorks, and Whiplash to me is a dark comedy. The overall academic jazz tropes present in the movie feel pretty rooted in reality, and the parts they get "wrong" make the movie funny to those in the know, while simply serving as plot devices for the general audience. So many jazz nerds these days seem so out of touch.. of course they would be exactly the types of folks to get offended by a movie and pick apart every little thing. Many academically trained jazz players are in fact gate keepers, and define themselves by their being a part of the "jazz community".. this membership in the community is so important to their identity and sense of self that they often wind up hyper conforming, homogenizing, and turn into tropes themselves. This movie holds up a hilarious and pretty honest mirror to the jazz scene as it currently stands imo, but as usual, this goes over the head of many of these jazz nerds because they're too busy being... pedantic. That's why I prefer to hang out with rappers and rockers. They're a lot more laid back as people and don't take themselves so seriously. And this is coming from a professional jazz musician from NYC...
@fresamouse

not really. the jazz community isn't gatekept, people are just often scared they can't play it, or that it's too complex for them. but it's still a deeply inclusive and welcoming community. and no, we don't take ourselves that seriously. my love to you, man.

Thats a fair point@@fresamouse... I shouldn't paint the entire community with broad strokes. When I was coming up, for every down to earth person I met on the scene, I would also always meet someone else with the characteristics I described in my original post.. but you're right, it's for sure it's not everyone. I realize my attempted tongue in cheek post came off a bit hostile, but the types of jazz musicians I was describing in my original post do exist and their attitudes can become a bit tiresome after a point. But this is just my perspective, I definitely can't speak for everyone. Love back to you!

5:02 Also, that is literally the point! He's supposed to be the opposite of Neimann and his appearance signals to the audiance that Neimann belong more than him, which makes the scene where Fletcher picks jock over him work even better Oops another one: 6:43 That's, once again, the fucking point. Fletcher is not being resonable in this scene. He's obviously using it as a method to wear down Neimann, and therefore picked a skill that he knew Neimann wouldn't be confident in. Adam Neely might be a good musician but his ability to analyse and interpret art is abysmal if this is the standard

imagine being high and mighty about playing music thats entirely written for you by someone else and doing things exactly how you were told to do them without ever figuring anything out on your own there's a reason I did band in middle school and didnt do it in high school you could see the divide in people who actually wanted to play music and create, and the band kids most of them seemed to have no passion for any of the music they were playing. they just wanted awards.

I actually like Adam's videos, but got to admit that it really becomes annoying that every complain is about the details when most of them are there for a reason, they have narrative purpose. That's why it's a movie, not a documentary.

I dont think Adam Neely's opinion is representative in any way. He had been called out by musicians many time for saying bs about allegedly basic crap

I thought Jazz was basically on hospice. You'd think anything that brought attention and potentially new musicians to the genre would be welcomed.

Man i can't remember the last time i got so fucking histerycal while watching a video. I watched the Tony Soprano part like Ten times and had to stop cause i almost suffocated to death. Fart sniffing snubs like this guy will always exist. My girlfriend is studying music and she is a pianist and Whiplash is her favourite movie. So one musician really has to be full of himself to hate on this movie. Let alone make a fucking video about it.

Jazz might be the only genre of music with this level of elitism and gatekeeping associated with it. It's dying because they're too pompous and egotistical to ever pass the torch.
