Hello!!!
So this video was a whirlwind to research, I’d 100% recommend reading one (or all) of the articles I link because 😮😮.
Anyways, I don’t want this video to be taken as hate toward any idol because I’m sure a lot of them have plastic surgery but as this video is trying to demonstrate, that doesn’t detract from their beauty or their worth and it’s also encouraged for a very complex historical reason.
Ciao for Now!!

Loved the video and how well researched it was - definitely learnt something and I had no idea that this was linked to Japan’s colonialism My only point of criticism is the narrative that “pretty privilege exists because people assume that prettier people are nicer or more unassuming”. I think that’s a huge generalization - someone less conventionally attractive but with a beautiful smile will seem kind and unassuming to most people whereas someone pretty but with cold gestures may seem unapproachable. It tends to depend on the body language and subtle mannerisms of each person rather than their appearance. I do think pretty privilege exists, however, for different reasons. I once read a post about a guy who was saying his boss hired a bunch of “pretty chicks” at EB Games because they would draw customers by their looks. It’s not necessarily about friendliness but more to do with vanity and lust. If someone is really pretty, they may catch your eyes but you won’t necessarily find them to be kind and assuming, rather, I argue, it could be the opposite. On top of that, the media unfortunately portrays pretty people as “dumb bitches”.

Pretty privilege certainly exists - it's a natural reaction anyone has to looking at/speaking to someone who is pretty (I've heard it being dubbed "the halo effect"). Literally, the vast majority of people are involuntarily affected by it because we're human. Even people of the same gender as you and who are straight, don't realise that they are also being affected by it. To use an example, I am straight but when I'm talking to my friend (a very handsome guy, seriously, he got featured in a travel ad while walking down a street abroad), I can't help but smile and feel happy when speaking with him. It's the halo effect. It can come out as a kindly and interested reaction from someone, or a bit less often, can come out as a hostile reaction (perhaps: feeling threatened/intimidated/annoyed by it); even bullying. Looking back, I realise now that probably why I have had a lot of people want to be friends with me is partly because I am decent looking (no model, but I guess pretty "enough", even though I don't particularly think so, and also tall), but also I'm very open and friendly. I realise I am very lucky, and it deeply saddens me that this is how the way things are because it's very superficial. I honestly didn't even really make the connection until I was like 21 because I guess it's never really been an obstacle for me before(?), but we are only human, so we are largely at the mercy of our evolutionary biology... however it is a very interesting phenomenon. Openly blatant and crass attitudes to the concept in K-Pop almost turn me away from the whole industry, because it is very concerningly superficial. It's the reason idols go overboard with surgeries; it's the reason why so many people are miserable. People are more than their facial make-up. People are more than their bodies. A good and kind soul is far more beautiful, and what someone really falls in love with... and is sadly much harder to find these days.

@keepitsecret-dl1pr I wanted to add that experiences are very varied but I do still stand by my initial take. I've seen really attractive guys treated like whatever if they have an awkward body language and what not - I think people find "body language" really attractive. Similarly, I wouldn't call myself attractive but people seem to want to speak to me because I smile a lot hahaha (and I would also feel inclined to speak to someone who feels warm and friendly). I think this applies to other men and women too, however, I've seen conventionally unattractive guys also be seen as really popular because of their natural charizzma I've mentioned that pretty privilege does exist, especially in certain industries. You can get a job from your looks alone. But I don't think that applies to every industry and can even be a detriment to yourself - some people don't take conventionally attractive people seriously in more academic career paths unfortunately It goes both ways and I do think being attractive is more beneficial than not but it's not as advantageous as people think it is

After years I have come to recognise and accept that 99.98% have had at least something “small” like fillers or veneers done, usually much more. It doesn’t change my opinion of an idol at all, only makes me sad cause when they go overboard it usually will have permanent consequences. The people who consider plastic surgery discourse as an insult or SLANDER need to wake tf up, the industry will never accept natural faces, every tiny ”flaw” of your face can and will be held against you, and it’s perfectly normal every idol would be affected by that

The first V-line surgery was performed and invented by Dr. Douglas Ousterhout in California. Feminisation FFS was adopted on a large scale in 1982 once again in America.

Tbh i think looks make up a large proportion of kpop in comparison to other musical genres or artists around the world. I think this vid doesnt address why kpop has become such a visual medium in the first place. There used to be kpop groups that didnt have much work done but that was like 2 decades ago. I think the answer is money. Idols are chosen by companies to sell products. When money got into kpop it became less about music and more about commercialism. Its great that there is more medical tourism but theres a cost to a thriving plastic surgery industry.

Yes, the cost is the wide-spreading of human misery; people being reduced solely to their bodies and faces. Something that frustrates us all because we have very little control over it. And what's even sadder? People celebrating it. People being warped by it.
