Why modern militaries still need artillery. Anyway, before we move further, we will identify what artillery is. Artillery refers to a class of heavy military ranged weapons built to launch munitions far beyond the range and power of infantry firearms. Early artillery development focused on the ability to breach defensive walls and fortifications during sieges, and led to heavy, fairly immobile siege engines. As technology improved, lighter, more mobile field artillery cannons developed for battlefield use. This development remain today, modern self-propelled artillery vehicles are highly mobile weapons of great versatility generally providing the largest share of an army’s total firepower.

So convient for their war mongering to bring out the technology of missiles and nuclear fusion/fission weaponry. AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE THAT KNOWS THAT NUCLEAR POWER IS NOT REALITY OTHER THAN HEATING WATER INTO STEAM. FEAR KEEPING US THIBKING WE NEED THEM FOR OUR PROTECTION. I ASSURE YOU IT IS ALIE. Artillery is the most cost effective way of delivering massive firepower to a target. Even when air supremacy has been achieved, artillery is clearly the cheaper option compared to bombing. Also it can provide fire support when you need it indefinitely, while aircraft can only loiter in an area for a limited time before it has to refuel/rearm. With that said, the Ukraine war has become an artillery war because of highly effective anti-air capability on both sides has precluded any possibility of saturation bombing without the attacker suffering massive casualties.

Russia failing to establish air supremacy or even superiority is what led to them being slaughtered. They should have gone in similar to the US vs. Iraq in 1991.

@@reboundrides8132 russia went in pretty heavy with the aircrafts, but so many got shot down by simple javelins and similiar that russia stopped. losing an aircraft worth 65-85 million dollars by a javelin costing 250 000 for the launcher and 180 000 per missile doesnt make sense. a lot of their aircrafts are also not operational or under very bad condition like missing gps, on top of this they have more aircrafts than pilots since training pilots are expensive

If there is one thing the Ukrainian war has proved it is the efficacy of artillery. With the advent of mass use of drones in recent conflicts one could have guessed that it would be relegated into a secondary role in the battlefield but that didn't turn out to be the case this time, quite the opposite.

Well man kinda true but less about out outsmarted. Cruise missles are way harder to stop especially fast and low flying ones. Artillary is behind the most modern missles but way cheaper and faster to produce for bulk effect even under economic constraint and sanctions on parts like electronics.

@@wmg5939 That is true. But why would you accept such a hockey match in the first place? All risk - to maybe keep your land... Let's say a burglar enters your house, you welcome him with a weapon of choice - why don't you resolve this over a game of chess? Because it is an unsolicited attack with one-sided motivations with all your valuables at stake. In a war, the attacker wants something - but they don't offer anything in return if they lose a hypothetical game.
