I tend to think its just some generational thing. Thinking back to my dad and his guys... barely anyone had more than a moustache. Even shaved clean was more represented compared to having a full beard, not even talking about full beards with a considerable length. My mom always had a rather moderate stance towards it. Not a fan herself, but in the end she was like "If you really want to keep it, at the very least keep it well groomed at all times."

Couple thoughts: I'm the oldest of 6, the youngest two are brothers. Both have facial hair. About 2 years ago, my mom made comments to the older one about "looking homeless". He ended up shaving a 4" or so beard and instantly regretted it. I asked mom about mine and she said "well yours looks well maintained..." so I pointed out that his could too and gave him some oils and tools and pointers. It's now back and looks good and she's supportive of all of us. Second, regarding the longer hair, we're probably an anomoly, but when I got out of the army I grew my hair out to about 9". Both of my younger brothers have long hair now. We all got or get comments about it more than our beards now because my mom comes from a time where men are supposed to be well groomed and smooth shaven. All of which I find kind of odd because my dad is a farmer and he and his 4 brothers all have beards, albeit under an inch. But still.

My mom actually came around after the first couple of months. She always thought beards were unkempt and unprofessional looking. Basically the societal stereotypes you mentioned. That was one of a handful of reasons I didn't start growing one until my late 20s despite always loving the way they looked. I'll never forget the first complement from her though. One day she's like "you know what you actually look really good with a beard" and from then on she'd always complement me about how nice it was coming in as I grew it out. She even enjoys some of the scents I wear (she's a firmly unscented kind of person with pretty much everything) and she buys me beard products for Christmas and my birthday

Unfortunately I don’t have time to read all the comments right now, but I look forward to it later today. I love the insight here Dan, and I am guessing that is momma Command in the thumbnail? The face only a mother can love didn’t become a popular or well known phrase if it didn’t have some truth to it, and I have never heard the phrase a face only a father can love. Lol! While most of us may not be Quasimodo under our man manes, all of us sporting facial hair feel we look better and become more confident with it more than without it, hence why we stick with it. My momma has been supportive to how I choose to present myself ever since the early 90’s when piercings where not as common as they are now. Her baby showed up one day with over a dozen holes, and surgical steel shining just on my head alone, and to say she was less than thrilled would be an understatement, and it was that way until we where in line at the pharmacy and she noticed this elderly woman mean mugging me before I noticed, and when I did, I simply said hello, how are you today? This lady was dumbfounded and just didn’t know what to say or do! We got out to the car, and my mom shared how no matter what I look like I am still her sweet boy, and if the stereotype that comes with that look may be unapproachable, I would be the one to change that reputation. Now, she would rather I kept my facial hair trimmed like she had gotten used to with a mustache and short goatee, but I know she supports my happiness only having to tease me a little in some loving fun, and one of the only few people allowed to actually check the tensile strength on my beard hair by giving it a few good tugs when I greet her. Ha ha ha! (and I am sure she prefers the beard over the piercings since I have not had them in since the late 90’s, early 2000’s.)

She overall doesn’t care for a lot of facial hair, she prefers a shorter “business” style beard. I have a medium size beard and want to keep it growing, and have a purposeful “mountain man” (but well maintained) beard. She isn’t a fan of that and says I need to trim it down. She said she would also like if I just shaved in general again because she wants to see my face again. My mom hates my beard. She does think that my beard hides my face, and she thinks I look better clean shaven, which I highly disagree with. My brother also has a full beard, and she doesn't like his either. I even have a female cousin who is like a big sister to me, who makes the same criticism that I am doing it to "hide my handsome face." That's never a man's prerogative for growing his beard. The beard is a part of his face. Comments like that are selfish narratives because they don't want to accept the fact that men choose to keep their beards rather than get rid of it for their own personal reasons. By that analogy, I can easily say that a woman who puts on makeup is hiding her natural beauty by putting paint on it. I am a man who has my own opinions, but I believe in letting people have their own prerogatives and letting them do what they want. I understand how a mother might not like it, but what I don't understand is why they just can't accept it and support it. At the end of the day, a beard is just hair, and parents should let their sons grow their beards without any issues or negative criticism. Here's some general advice I am going to give to everyone. Let people do what they want with their appearances, and keep your opinions to yourselves unless that person asks you for it. Otherwise, you are ruining your relationship with that person by opening your mouths out of selfishness.

My mom thinks my beard complements my face but she doesn’t care for longer beards. She admits that for her it's just a matter of what she's used to as most men didnt have beards in the 70s but she quickly got used to me having a full beard and even prefers it now. When I shaved for a family function last year she was disappointed because just the day before she had "told her relative how handsome I look with the beard" 😂 P.S. Good point regarding the beard being a natural part of the face and appearance and not an artificial "make-up" as many tend to call it. I think that, contributing to the normalization of beards in society, the recognition that beards aren't the "choice" insomuch as shaving is - could go a long way. Asking why a man has a beard runs contrary to the superior logic of inquiring why one should choose to remove it.

My mom never minded my mustache in the late 80's and early 90's. She didn't like the goatee in the 2000's, but absolutely hated me with a long beard. I think it's a generational thing. Mustaches were in when she was younger and that's the only facial hair she thinks is acceptable and neat. Kind of like George Steinbrenner with the NY Yankees and now Lou Lamierello with the NY Islanders. That generation likes men to be clean cut.

Are you sure it is not the case that a woman who hates beards just happens to be your mother? An older female relative (my generation) is the only person I know who hates (very strongly) my beard. She once told me that it looked good at one time but (at the time she said this) it “looks homeless” and she could not say when that point was reached (even though my barber maintained my beard until The Lockdown). So it couldn’t even be trimmed back to what she’d liked. And nobody else I’d encountered in my bearded life ever described my beard that way.
@DanCBearded6 ай бұрын
No, I personally think it’s much deeper than that. Idk a female my age that dislike beards. Of course that’s generational, but I think there is something to the mother points I made. Of course I cannot prove anything, but just my observations!

Most Mother's doesn't like beards on their sons face. Instead of thinking, hey my son has grown and that's life. They used of seeing their sons with that babyface when first born, which we're all grown into a mature adult now to have beards.

I think it's partially generational and social representation of beards. I think historically beards have been misaligned to bad men on social media. My mother has made comments about me shaving my beard (and anti me going bald). My mother's hair on top of her head is important to her and makes her happy, after I told her I'd shave once she shaves her head...that was the last time she said anything to me about shaving my beard.

My dad has always had some sort of facial hair wether it be short to heavy stubble or a thick moustache. So I started growing mine since it’s been able to grow. My mom had never had a problem with it until I started letting it grow long. She says I look more handsome when it’s short. She is 56. My mom’s sister loves my beard. Now my grandma hates it and my bald head with a passion. She 83.

I think you're spot on with it being something in their DNA... I've asked my mum lots of times what she thinks of my beard n she has never liked it. When I've asked for details she said it "looks scruffy" n she would prefer if I shaved but she doesn't mention it if I don't ask so there's no pressure from her.

I imagine that some mothers would like their sons to remain a baby... haha, that reminds me of the story of an old friend of mine who used to do cockfighting and his wife hated it when he did that, he also played card games illegally and in secret without his wife knowing it, because his wife if she knew would have reproached him and pulled his ears, but when my old friend brought back the pile of money at home on his wife's table then well she was happy haha. Ps: He stopped doing these illegal things now.
