Ironically, that's what makes Lana del Rey's NFR more indie-sounding even though it was clearly pop. Really happy that her fanbase, though smaller than most, is insanely dedicated though, and if you've been to one of her concerts, you know that statement is not an over-exaggeration.

Unfortunately it seems that CRJ is probably going to stay as "underrated",as it's very rare for artists who once had a big breakthrough but then fell into obscurity to come back as popular as they once were. People are most attracted to succesful "Legacy Stars" or New Bloods. Not that CRJ needs to be a huge popstar, her music is great no matter how many streams she gets and even when relatively small compared to her peak, she still holds a very dedicated fanbase.

She’s always made music that is unapologetically romantic, vulnerable, and relatable. A lot of 2010s pop was an exercise in self-mythologizing by putting in specific details that fans had to “decode” to learn about particular breakups and beefs the artist was having. Carly Rae eschewed all of that and just makes brilliant crystal-clear pop that aims broader but never feels generic.
@DanielleSouthcott Жыл бұрын
What you said. Which is probably why her music feels a lot more "relatable" (as fed up as I am with that word) to me than most of the bigger names in pop. I don't have to keep her specific image and lore centred in my brain to become emotionally invested.

I not a big fan of pop music, heck, I've beraly heard a few CRJ songs (all of them bangers imo), but I think the reason she's so universally loved by both pop fans and non fans it's because she gives away the vibe of making music for the fun and love of the art and not just to top the charts, which is extremely hard to find specifically in the pop genre. The fact that her top hits are certified hood classics, also help her a lot in gaining mass appeal.

Jesus this is an excellent video. Very well thought-out and you come across as articulate. Amazing work! I will say, 1 additional reason I can think of, and related to your Reason#3: Increasing visibility of queer / LGBTQ+ folks in internet and music spaces. Because of how dedicated Carly’s gay fanbase is who love pop in general, saying that you like Carly’s work almost feels like shorthand for saying you are an ally to the LGBTQ community, especially if you’re a cis straight dude. Not to say disliking her work is homophobic in itself, or that straight guys who like her music are fronting, but still.

I was lucky enough to see her in concert last month! She is so incredibly talented and I honestly wish she got more mainstream fame and popularity outside of Call Me Maybe. And even outside of that TikTok audio from TLT even though that’s definitely a step in the right direction. But, then again, having that smaller, more intimate connection with an artist is priceless. While I will NEVER be able to pick up Taylor Swift concert tickets, I was able to cop CRJ tickets at a fairly reasonable price not too long before her concert.

I agree with his point that Emotion is culturally significant inspite of the lack of commerical success, but there's no evidence that Reputation is not culturally significant. That felt very anecdotal. Like the amount of times in a week I see someone joke about being in their Reputation era is astounding all these years later. Additionally, I think Taylor did incorporate hip hop elements in ways I thought were pushing towards corny but narratively it does make sense in the cope of her career why Reputation is the way it is sonically and the style that it uses makes sense.

I think the Ryan Gosling theory is most concrete. There's a lot of crap in pop; there's also an obscene amount of talent. It's fine if the sampled drums or the melodyne vocals aren't your jam, that's a matter of taste, but Carly's music is just... honest? Pop is all about mass appeal, tapping into ideas that everyone can relate to; this isn't bad, but it's easy to tell when it's manufactured vs. someone just talking about their life for 3 minutes. I love Dvořák concertos and weird-ass experimental music, but I also love hearing a simple and cleverly written song about, "Remember that time you liked someone and they didn't like you back? Dang that sucks." P.S. how are there no comments talking about you calling her fanbase "Dedicated" lol

Carly’s music just resonates with people because it’s so authentic, so unabashedly her. the only thing i would add is that as a poptimist, i grew up listening to a lot of radio pop. it wasn't even especially deliberate, my parents would just always have charting music on in the background. carly speaks to the nostalgia i feel for that period without being derivative of it, mainly because she's a much better song writer than 99% of artists active in the late 2000s. it feels like the evolution and maturation of a lot of the sounds i associate with my childhood. there's also the pattern as layed out by max landis, which essentially demonstrates how carly is one of the most thematically focused artists currently working

I was just having this discussion with a coworker who also enjoys pure pop music. We were talking about how she's not your "mainstream pop" that you hear on the radio (I know lol), she's just pop. Pop music and culture tend to be synonymous, even if the actual genre of the music might be pop and while she was the peak of it for a moment in her career, you just cannot group her and her music with it. Her music speaks for itself, she doesn't even really have a personality and/or image that is emphasized and is identifiable apart from what she does while most pop artists and any celebrity really can hardly be carried by their craft alone. People can easily say they love her music and it plainly means that. It's a general public fan base rather than the weird, stan culture that everyone knows and goes to war with. I really appreciate this discussion and this video because I had never realized this like most people as mentioned in the video that only last heard about Carly Rae Jepsen since Call Me Maybe until a friend of mine recommended Emotion. I might not be enough of a nerd, but I’d only heard of CRJ in passing, actually thought she was a rock band 😅 so imagine my surprise when I saw that the singer of “Call Me Maybe” has shared fans with Death Grips, Slint, Daughters, etc… I might just have to check that Emotion out. 😂

I'm exactly the type of person that would put a bunch of experimental or underground artists and Carly Rae Jepsen as my favorites on the same list, so this video is appreciated lol. She's really the queen. Whenever I recommend her music, people are like: "Wait, she has more than one song? And you like her? WTF?" but then they actually listen to Emotion and agree with me.

Carly Rae Jepsen is adorkable, and not as out there interesting or social saavy as her other contemporaries. The fact she is not huge as a pop artist is part of her appeal tbh... if she was as popular as say Taylor Swift... I doubt the same people would love her. She has a weird indie like cred for a pure pop artist. She started off doing pop rock on a canadian label that was not that huge at the time but Justin Bieber blew her up to be bigger than she could probably handle... and that humbleness to her is what makes her appealing I guess. And EMOTION is probably one of the best pure pop records of the 2010's.
