A Boomer Geezer here, one who lived through the musical smorgasboard of late 60's and 70's. I've been looking for contemporary music with that kind of depth, warmth, and individual creativity. I think I've found it. Weyes Blood is a revelation. No eye rolling here. This woman is a serious artist, helping listeners of all ages process these wildly bizarre and dangerous times.

A friend recommended "Something to Believe" to me when I was having a hard time at home in 2020. I remember hearing that song and crying my eyes out, i then turned to the album and cried some more... it gave me confort, peace and the sense of connection I longed for in some of my hardest times. It was a healing experience, I fell in love with the album and with Weyes Blood. As a Beatles fan I enjoy your content and this s video was a beautiful surprise! Titanic Rising didn't hit me the first time I heard it, but I ended up revisiting it months later and the whole thing just made sense. It's since become my favorite album of the past decade among contemporary music. It hits me on such a personal level, sometimes moving me to tears. My exposure to lots of 70s singer/songwriters as a child probably had a lot to do with why I gravitated toward this album's sound, and Natalie Mering's voice. It's absolutely gorgeous

The first song is so insanely beautiful that it filled me with this odd sense of hope. It's nostalgic but also fresh, it's a reassurance that we can still make music which sounds EXACTLY like that of the 70s - we haven't lost touch at all, we've just moved on to different sounds. We've changed.

I've always had a hard time "getting into" music. Music was just background noise to me and up until my early 20s, I didn't understand what all the fuzz was about? How people could get so emotional, listening to the same tracks over and over again. How everybody else's teen years were full of musical memories and mine weren't. I'm still not as deep into music as I'd like to be... but it's thanks to people like you, who sit down and explain it to me, that I've started feeling it. In the past couple of years, I've finally found music that moves me. And that's been a revelation. :) So, thank you! I'm excited to check out this album!

I'm Mexican so forgive my English: 🌌 A really underrated album, i never thought you would talk about this masterpiece, In my opinion this is the álbum you can name when some music purist say: "today's music is trash". And this album is not good because of that 70s sound,but for the composition of the songs, in my opinion this is the way that modern music should go from now on, a perfect example of creativity and softness audio with deep lyrics, and it's been only a few years since this came out, only the time will say if this album is gonna be the best album of the 2010's. Anyway, great video 📷 and you literally take the words of my mind about the influences of the carpenters and beach boys, with that ocean sound.
@Y-two-K
@Y-two-K Жыл бұрын
To be fair, when people are talking about today's music being trash, they're more referring to the mainstream big hits. Which I do agree has been on a steady decline since the 80's, with a few exceptions.
@forest60s63
@forest60s63 Жыл бұрын
@@Y-two-KI agree with that but there's really people out there generalizing this generation and when someone try to explain why today's music is the same as good as the 60's classic they close their mind, and it's funny because all the people that I have heard saying that, is the same people that say: "rock is culture" but they only knows guns and roses and think that Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson are the greatest artist and singers of all time.

It was the first show of the whole tour, and during FJM's set Weyes Blood came out to where we were sitting to watch him live. I asked her if she wanted to sit on the end of our row as there was nobody sitting there but she said she didn't want to be in the way and chose to stand and watch the set. She also went out of her way to hold the door open for people who were coming and going. I became a big fan after first being exposed to her since then and glad she's getting some more recognition

I really like how you've done this, Elliot. Bravo. I stumbled across Weyes Blood’s “Front Row Seat…” just before TR was released, and was immediately hooked. This was a few years after I had returned to composing and recording my own music on a near daily basis, with plenty of day-and-night-long sessions of complete obsession and joy, after having decided to stop making music in order to focus on career and family some 20 years earlier. When I first listened to Titanic Rising, I was floored. I had finally found music that hit the spot the way my childhood influences from the 60s and 70s had. It was all there, the songwriting and musicianship, with real instruments, the concept, the package, the soul. Like a brick house made of wood. I haven’t found anyone making music that has done this to me since American Music Club, and the live instrumental-only sets of the Toiling Midgets, in the early 90s in San Francisco. Not to compare them to WB in anything but their impact on me. No other modern artist inspires me to this degree, but I keep looking. I couldn’t get her out of my head, and when I went back to continue work on my own music, I found myself underwhelmed with my own creative ability, and became stuck. At first, I tried to simply be influenced by Natalie and do what I could to allow her work to help me with my own, but this didn’t work for me. That was when my efforts started unraveling, and came to a stop. It wasn’t entirely her fault: I had been like a little Todd Rundgren, to borrow a phrase from Natalie herself, doing it all on my own, the singing, the playing, the recording. And I was feeling hampered by this as well as by my limited budget to provide the equipment I needed to really deliver what I was aiming at. So I was already feeling frustrated, but TR sealed it for me. That lasted a couple years, during which time I did little more than tweak some of my earlier recordings, or occasionally try something really different, to reasonable success for myself but nothing to shout about. Eventually I was able to accept that I am what I am, and I can still create joy for myself, but it was difficult. I still listen to TR once in a while. Close myself in my bedroom, put on the big headphones, turn off the light, and fall in. I’m waiting patiently for her to put out something that grabs me again like TR did.

Thank you for doing this video! I have been totally in love with this album for 4 years now, and going around telling everyone who would(or wouldn't) listen about what an amazing artist Natalie is. A fine analysis of a superb album, one that's really for the ages in my opinion. She renewed my faith in modern music, something I would've scoffed at 10 years ago, and now she only inspires to go hunting for more in the hope of finding something as great

What a well executed video and I wish more people knew about the creation of the album cover, it's truly a miracle that it exists. Good stuff 👏!

Omg yes!! This is probably my favorite album "not" from the 60s/70s, I'm going to see her perform in Chicago in March and I couldn't be more excited!

This album had a significant impact on me as a music lover, a creative and as a person. It was my favourite record of 2019, and one of a select few albums I would describe as perfect. When the world was starting to shut down during the pandemic, I put on Titanic Rising. When Wild Time came on, I broke down. Not from a sense of hopelessness, but from a sonic and lyrical hug that ensured me that I’m not alone in this global pandemonium. Very rarely does music make me emotional like that, but I’m grateful that it happened. I believe having that moment eased me into this terrifying new world as much as it could. And since I’ve generally been in a good frame of mind since the pandemic started, I owe part of my mental health to Weyes Blood. Thanks for creating this video, Elliot. One of your best yet, and if this means you’re looking to expand your palette, then I’m open ears to whichever artist or topic you cover next. As one Australian to another, a video about The Go-Betweens would be fantastic!

One of my favorite albums of all time. It doesn’t feel like a nostalgia trip like silk sonic or other albums you mention, it still feels modern especially in the lyrics. The sincerity I can definitely see as comparable to artists like Joni Mitchell, but Titanic Rising is honestly just an incredible record.

Weyes Blood's music operates in the same spiritual space as Julia Holter's. Two lovely, forward-thinking artists in the same influential vein as Joni Mitchell, as you mentioned, or Kate Bush or Bjork

Yes! I was lamenting over the fact that Julia hasn't released a solo album since Aviary and then randomly found Weyes, and I feel like they share so many similarities while also being incredibly unique.

Julia Holter has been doing everything but release an album lol. Concerts, singles, film scores, she’s been really active lately.

I'm glad I stumbled on this video! This is a very important album to me, and I've often reflected on what I believe to be its wider importance, for exactly the reasons that you say, though I've never managed to articulate them as well as you do here. Thank you for doing so! On top of all of these observations, as you touch on, is WB's sheer inventiveness in all of these songs, those deft but wild chord sequences and seemingly timeless melodies, which pull off the trick of feeling effortlessly conceived and familiar, not just in form. For me, that's another thing that takes it out of the realm of mere retro-focused imitation. Few albums manage what's been managed here, from any era. Anyway, thank you - I enjoyed this video a lot!

Really enjoyed this video, and I agree with everything you say about Weyes Blood and Titanic Rising. I think this woman is the "real deal" in terms of songwriting and singing. I'm in my late sixties, and used to be a singer and songwriter myself, but in my early forties illness and disability put paid to all of that. For a long while I couldn't listen to singer /songwriters, it was too painful, but now I take an avid interest in songwriting. Obviously, I love the musicians of "my" generation - e.g Joni Mitchell, Tim Buckley and Nick Drake. However, I think there are some amazing musicians around now, such as Father John Misty, Fleet Foxes and Sujan Stevens. There are also some contemporary singer songwriters who I listen to who are in my view criminally underrated, such as Will Stratton (particularly the album "the Changing Wilderness ), Jenny Lysander and Raoul Vignell (Years in Marble) The music is more stripped back than "Titanic rising" but definitely worth a listen

I'm glad you made this video, Elliot. You should make more in the same vein. This was one of my albums of the year when it came out and I was so happy it was embraced by so many. You know what ELSE Everyday is like? Freakin' Abba :) That was the first thing it brought to mind for me. Also, no mention of Jonathan Rado's gorgeously organic production? They practically made the album together. You should check out his band Foxygen. You might like it, although for you it probably falls in the pastiche category you mentioned in your video.

The album popped up in my recommendations after making a playlist consisting of basically just The Cardigans and Air, and without looking into it too much, I immediately assumed it was an older album too. It’s so full of authenticity and originality that a lot of vintage songs lack and I loved it even though it’s not my typical music at allll. Definitely recommend, Weyes Blood is an amazing artist.

I always say her music came to me at the perfect time in my life, just as I was wrapping up my final year of college and reflecting daily on my youth and my future. The themes, emotions and lyrics in her felt so relatable for that particular moment in my life. Her work is so beautiful yet she is so underrated! I still have no clue how I found her but I'm so glad I did.

I stopped at 4 & a half minutes the other day, and listened to 'Titanic rising' so as the album crept back into my consciousness today - i wanted to watch the rest of the video. I didnt know Weyes Blood but i listened once and was captivated immediately. Its ambitious both in thought and music and i like that! she's reaching for something and its been wonderfully executed in this magical set of songs. I look forward to further listening. Ive added the vinyl yo my 'Watch list'! Great album cover isn't it?

So glad you posted this review, this album is wild, and means so much to me. You nailed so much of how I felt regarding it and actually shed some really insightful light on to the water themes for me. Really just enjoyed it as the last beautiful “care free” album I got to listen to for the better part of a year before Covid hit. You really did a succinct job in making it seem like a piece of art for a pivotal time in the world.
