You mean 830km/hr not miles per hour. 830miles/hr is faster than the speed of sound.

The reason modern jets “fly slower” is two fold. The faster they go the more drag and the wing design. I flew Boeings for 43 years and the 747 flew far faster than the 737 designed at the same time. The 747 would cruise at .87 Mach and the early 737s at .73. Main difference is the wing design. While body does effect drag the ability to approach supersonic speeds is the difference in wing airfoil and sweep. These days the 787 is faster than the 777, which is faster than the 767, again wing design. Yes there’s a whole lot more to aerodynamics and efficient designs than just the wings, but that depends on the intended application.

To go from São Paulo-GRU to Lisbon-LIS non-stop it would cost me 900 dollars round trip on Azul. Air Canada offered it by 600 dollars round trip. All I had to do was to fly from São Paulo Brazil to Toronto Canada, then to London Heathrow and then to Portugal. It took me 3 DAYS, I felt like Tom Hanks in The Terminal but I saved 300 dollars at the end

Mr. Camara, since no one has called you out on your lie yet, i thought i'd do the honors. This story is 100% BS. How do i know? There are no direct flights to Lisbon from São Paulo. Second, Air Canada doesn't offer (GRU-YYZ-LHR-LIS) and it definitely won't take 3 days. And third, the cheapest ticket from Air Canada (GRU-connection-LIS) is $2,000+. Nice try at lying though :)

@enthusiasticaviation_yt8637 Right now Ita, flies from MIA to FCO nonstop round trip for $2,200. My cousin in Italy paid 700 Euros to come to Miami to visit me in August. Air Transat connecting through Montreal.

Cross sectional area of airplanes have been increasing with engine upgrades and with practically every upgrade cruise speed has decreased.

While over land, airliners are not allowed to fly over the speed of sound, which is 700 MPH. This is so they don't generate Sonic Booms over populated areas. 747's usually travel between 570 and 650 MPH. They can fly faster over water, but speed varies depending on whether they have head winds or tail winds. The fastest speed a 747 has ever flown was 825 MPH over the Atlantic Ocean with a 200 MPH tail wind. The Concorde (when it was around) could fly much faster, but again, only over water. Have the speeds changed in the past 50 years? Not really. Will a airliner fly faster or slower depending on scheduling? Yes.

Sure, some planes such as narrow-bodies do fly slower now than they did in the 70s and 80s, 900 km/h today vs 1,000 I’m/h back then. However, the biggest passenger jets of today fly faster than any big jets from 50 years ago. The 747-8I is the latest variant of the jumbo jet and according to Boeing’s website, it flies 360 yards per second which translates to 1,185 km/h. The fastest jumbo jets of the 70s and 80s such as the 747-SP could only reach 1,100 km/h if that. Private jets are also getting faster with the latest ones being able to cruise at up to 1,150 km/h. Though given that narrow-bodies make up the overwhelming majority of airlines, it is true that the average jetliner is getting slower even if the big ones are getting faster. What’s most interesting is that regional turboprops are getting faster at a quicker rate than any other plane. The state of the art Q400 cruises at 665 km/h compared to the non-Q Dash 8s and other older turboprops which could only reach up to 465 km/h at most, often times much less! For comparison, the long distance cruising speed of most western fighters is around 650 km/h. The fact that the most modern propeller airliner speeds now slightly exceed the cruise speed of some of the most advanced fighter jets is something we should really rejoice over and remind ourselves of to cheer us up during the darkest hours! Look up at contrails among the other clouds during the day and watch the navigation lights among the stars at night, it shall serve a reminder as to why we’re here and that we all have a special purpose in life! So keep up the great work, I’m proud of you! ❤️

English please 🤣 But seriously, America failed at adopting the metric system, so I have to use Google to convert your speeds to mph.

I don’t agree. Should be able to design engines faster and cheaper. But that doesn’t make enough money for all the builders and fuel companies so this is what we get. But of course greed is everything.

Slower flying means less fuel consumption. Less fuel consumption means greater profits for the airline at the expense of the passengers.

There is a big typo in your title, if you don't know the difference between THAN and THEN, then you shouldn't be using either. So why do planes fly slower Today THAN 50 years ago?
