Why do people continue to play Dead by Daylight if they don't like it?

A game of DBD I had with an upset player. I find it interesting to come across many players are seemingly burnt out on both sides, but continue to still play.

In this video, Sable: Sent the killer to Red Forest. Sat at the gate doing nothing so you couldn’t get hatch. Tells the guy who is frothing at the mouth and being super toxic that he has a point. Some people, man.

@JakeobE yeah. Especially when she clearly didn't consider that the guy she's agreeing with just disproved his own reason for saying people are ego tripping by being a hypocrite. He preaches that everyone is egotistical and sweaty, even complaing about a streamer. Then proceeds to try correcting Sable on some high horse that not all streamers are bad. Is this guy even listening to himself? I swear critical thinking and self awareness are two of the things people like this lack most.

btw Red forest isn't that bad for Ghosty/ I played against GF once he brought that map, and we all struggled to uncloack him there. Probably bcs dbd is broken but still> Then i tried to play there myself. Unfrotunately i got swf they did gens really fast and healed very fast etc. and Mikaela decided to be toxic from teh beginning...so i got my 2k bcs of her. Never be toxic for no reason to anyone.

0:17 I have a theory about this. I think it's because this game, when compared to the other prominent asym horror games, is more "arcade" style: You load it, the matches are typically on the shorter side, the goal for either side to win is linear (until the hatch shows up), and then once complete, everyone is booted out of the server and you queue up for the next match immediately (if you want). The challenges help to change that a bit, but all they typically do is shift the single winning goal toward something else (ex: rather than just get a 4K, now you have to get a mori 4K). So, people play this game, get match after match of frustration, but continue to play it because of its quick, arcade-feel and with that comes the expectation - or hope - that the next match will be "the one."
@David_Hypnos
@David_Hypnos 2 ай бұрын
But who is saying you have to get a 4k in the first place? That is where people are faltering. I never go into a game expecting to escape or expecting to get even a single kill. It doesn’t happen that way all the time. Some people, however, go into these games feeling they’re entitled to a 4k or whatever and rather than simply going in and doing their best they immediately choose to play in the most horrible way possible. Then we have the people who go into games with the sole intention of making other players miserable because they can. The toxicity in this game has been fostered by none other than BHVR themselves who have partially created the culture we see.
@TommyCupcakes
@TommyCupcakes 2 ай бұрын
@@David_Hypnos Oh I fully agree. When I play killer, I only look for a 4K when I need the adept achievement. Otherwise, I like playing pretty relaxed and focus on getting bloodpoints for things rather than sweating a 4K. In fact, the people I play SWF with, I originally found when I was playing as their killer and I let one of them have the hatch (and then apologized post-match for inadvertently tunneling someone).

Why do people take this game so seriously? I get if you are a content streamer and your audience watches you play one game then yeah you can't just take a break because it may be your job but for 99.99% of people it is a fun way to relax. So what if you lose and people crouch at you, at this point isn't it expected? If this ruins your day I think you have other issues you need to work on and this is just the trigger.

cause gaming is competitive now. People dont play to have fun, they want to win and be better at the video game, which is kinda sad tbh. Devs make those online pvp games competitive cause its a HUGE market right now, its increased toxicity by a mile and made player miserable. In the end of the day, i blame e-sport bs that forces itself down in EVERY online game. Its like those pro gamers want to feel better about themselve by taking video game seriously and be good at it, whats the point?? Video games are made for fun, period.

A very interesting view at the end with the other players. Their accepted fact that they cannot stop playing. It also reminds me of a fallacy. I can’t remember the name but it’s the notion of dismissing any solution that isn’t perfect; therefore, all other solutions suck. If the reduction of playing wouldn’t remove all toxicity they experience, why bother. Gotta keep playing. It reminds me of a doctor joke. I also enjoy that there was no antagonizing.

I just had a game on RPD against Nemesis. He chased me into this very small room, and as soon as he hit me 2 other survivors fell through a hole in the ceiling into that same VERY small room. Unfortunately, even though it looks like I should be able to just run out one of the doors, Nemesis was somehow able to body block both doors and downed all of us. Nemesis is already massive but why is he able to body block an area TWICE his size? This is just one example of how this game can be so bad that you have to laugh. Understandably, you have to laugh OR it will make you cry. It is your choice.

The reason why people continue to play DBD even though how frustrating the game can be is because what other game can you play where Micheal Myers’s is chasing Nicholes cage, or pyramid head chasing Claire redfeild from resident evil. DBD is a very good game just on the wrong hands of developers but 3 reasons I can think of… 1 they play it because they’ve spent so much money on it 2 because they love horror such as mystery 3 there is not other game that you can play to have Freddy from nightmare on elm street chasing Nichole’s cage If it weren’t for all the licensing characters in DBD’ DBD would have died a long time ago

Yeah, the Ghostface needs to realize that even if you love a game, you need to take breaks if it is stressing you out. If I have a bad killer game that gets to me, I simply just put my controller down and watch a video for ten or so minutes. It not only calms me down, but refreshes my mind and my muscle memory. Even if you've played your first match of the day, take a break. Usually ten minutes is a good amount of time to chill and calm your nerves.

Feel like it's not just DBD where this is a problem. Killer can be super stressful to play and it's what pushed me to play more survivor than killer before I stopped actively playing. But that said, just taking 5 between matches can do a ton more rather than playing on a tilt one match after another. That just leads to more loss and a gambler's fallacy, it's not worth the stress. Too many people seem to have the mindset that you HAVE to win a game in order to have fun.

But one day I had the realization that I was miserable playing the stupid game and it was just a chore for me, so I said "fuck it" and stopped playing it. Found other games to play, and eventually started getting more into cooking. I think more people need to learn how to disconnect from games when they start feeling like chores to play, when they're making you miserable. Missing a daily isn't the end of the world, blood points are not finite. Hell, even with limited-time cosmetics, it's not worth the grind if grinding is miserable for you. If a game starts to feel like a chore and not something you do to have fun - yeah maybe take a break or start a different hobby. Games are supposed to be fun and somewhat help you escape reality, if you get angry at not being able to do your dailies because other people are having fun, then what's even the point? Might as well do a 12 hour shift at your job. I promise it will have the same effect.

No matter how much i preach this simple fact, it still hasn't entered anyones thick skull. I might be stupid for thinking it then, oh well Basically Stockholm Syndrome mixed in with a little Buyers Remorse. This isn't a game where you can sell your inventory like TF2 when you're done with it, some redacts spend money on this product and then WILL NOT afford to leave it because of that We are also in the age of the consoomer so no wonder they're stuck playing this fast food mediocrity, they never tasted anything better nor will they ever. Their taste in media is probably distorted already if they think DBD is good lmao. Sure you can never get an experience like it elsewhere....but why would you want to💀 Incompetent devs, entitled players and this product is still functional. I'm surprised the gears are still turning after all this time with the player base constantly on it's others throats but agreeing the game's not good. In what other way would you diagnose this problem aside from mentally sick individuals. Perhaps they feel like they belong in the community or smth, they have their little bubble to feel safe in and that's why they don't leave

I do have my moments when I get made at some of the playstyles i see but i never direct my anger towards that player or hold the anger. I always still try to do my best towrds the team i never rage quit. But one thing about console we dont have end game chat. But even if we did id hardly use it. I can spend a lot of time playing and not get mad at the game. Like i said though, thats just me.

Relatively new to this game (started in Blood Moon event) but I ran into this problem with Destiny 2. I had played the game so much and exhausted myself in it chasing loot and challenges that were very annoying to get. On top of that I was getting team after team of either bad players (nothing against being bad/new, it's the starting line to getting good but at the time I was explicitly looking for people who knew what to do) or people who were blatantly toxic and also burnt out who chose to lash out the frustration. Couple that with the devs consistently making very odd development choices that directly impacted my playstyle over the course of the last year or so and a suite of systems designed for constant player retention and I was just dreading playing the game. But still I was logging in since it was "my game" and I was getting frustrated when I had a bad session. I love the game but I hated the time I spent in it, yknow? It was a chore and a habit, not a thing I was doing for fun. So I took a six month break when the last Season before the new expansion (which was delayed) had its story wrap up. I just put the game down, didn't log into it or think about it for six months, and picked up some new games and got deeper into my Warhammer hobby to fill the space with something positive that I wasn't getting with Destiny 2. And coming back six months later, that break made all the difference.

GF was definitely frustrated by previous games, but y'all saying it's just a game to him is simply invalidating his feelings, something A LOT of players in dbd have gone through. I feel bad for the GF. Granted he was frothing and being toxic for no reason, but if you read what he said and what got censored, he was told to unalive himself for just playing the game - something he paid money for, just as the toxic people did. I think the ignorant attitude of people is not something one just have to accept and move on from, since it gives a lot of ammunition to these 5 year old bullies that have nothing better to do in life

yeah, but instead of just shrugging it off like a normal adult, he carries this toxicity over to his next game and ruins the mood for everyone over there. And someone there might do the same, so the cycle continues on and on and on. Toxicity sucks, as Cope said, we all know that. We also know, that toxic stuff happens, especially online, but we all have to realize, that only those with the mindset of a toddler are really toxic and we are NOT a single bit better, if we don't stand above that and still carry it over to other people, who had absolutely nothing to do with the original toxic person. I have to remind my sub-1k hour friends constantly to leave if they're injured and/or have no ability to take a hit. It's not always malice, some people just don't think very clearly.

I bought this game in 2016 (beta), but I only have 1700 hours ingame... I take looooong breaks and play so casually.

The only explanation to me is PTSD from real toxic players. They get only one real toxic survivor/killer and starts to project that feeling into everyone, same if they’re playing survivor. I started doing a bit of that on killers, because some people I don’t even know why they play killer. Swinging at you on the ground, hook hits, shaking their head on downs…like, you’re not the main character dude, it’s a game calm down. All of that to sometimes lose the game so what’s the point of that attitude? Then you find out most of these people are in their 30s living a sad life

I think it goes back to a person having every bit of their life revolve around the game in an unhealthy way. I've lost some people on my list due to this, like hooking a friend back to back in a game. It's definitely serious business

I don’t play it. This game sucks now. It hope it moves away from this really sweaty competitive direction. Games are always sweaty and unfun. I couldn’t imagine being a content creator having to play this garbage everyday.

I can kinda get it from both sides. Of course you should take a break if you're consistently annoyed/frustrated for 30-an hour etc. But; there is also literally no avoiding the toxicity. DBD has one of the worst communities i have ever seen in a video game, over my 6.2k hours and 4 p100s i can count the good interactions i've had with people in endgame on both hands. I am currently taking a break from the game right now because even though i'm not a toxic person it's SO, SO hard to not just get pissed off when you play against the 5-6th full meta blight or spirit/swf and have them talking trash in endgame with an ego the size of the moon after using every single cheap trick in the book (hard tunneling at 5 gens, slugging, MFT, buckle up, bodyblocking doorways with OTR, DS straight off hook etc)

I think some people are miserable and they lack the self awareness to unhook themselves from the 🎡 . I definitely reached that point before not to the point of shitting on others but feeling the game is not fun. I noticed that I gradually stopped picking it up until I quit back in 2022. Frankly, it helped me a lot. I needed a new lens to look at the game. I didn’t like the outcome I had when I played to win. Now, I play for different reasons and I only pick the game when I am chill. DBD isn’t the game to pick to destress. That’s my take. Coming from a stressful long day and picking it up won’t relax you. I deal with a lot irl and coming exhausted and stressed into the game, makes it less enjoyable. Especially with BM. You take things personally. I had times where I was tired and outsmarted by people who continuously BMed me. It felt horrible that I would stop playing after that game. I also was pushing myself to win when I was hardly keeping my eyes open! 🤣.. that was a mistake. Now, I play to my best abilities and don’t think much of the game outcome. I don’t want to win. I just want to have fun. That has changed the game for me. I am also enjoying all the other events too. I am one of the few who truly enjoyed the Masquerade because I truly didn’t care if it was fair. The concept was new and fun to me. I played the event queue from the beginning to the end. In fact, I am already missing it because playing with my regular build vs regular killer build is boring. I want the change! I want the chaos! Let’s hope they bring it back

That's an awesome outlook. Although I personally didn't care for the event itself because there was too much going on for me, I like that there was/is a crowd that will enjoy these things. I'm also hoping that the Chaos Shuffle makes a permanent return, even if it's only for the player that chooses it for their build. I enjoyed the randomness
