Almost everyone hates jazz, but why? David answers that question with a song: The Super Mario Brothers Theme Song. We'll talk about what makes music enjoyable to listen to, both rhythmically and harmonically, with some examples you'll probably recognize. And we'll play the Super Mario Bros Overworld Theme in three jazz styles: traditional jazz, latin jazz, and fusion.
Which style do you love the most? Do you still hate jazz? Let us know in the comments section below!
1. Intro [0:00]
2. Tension and Release [2:04]
3. Jazz Under The Surface [3:08]
4. Traditional Jazz Mario [4:27]
5. Latin Jazz Mario [5:34]
6. Fusion Mario [7:05]
7. A Jazz Musician's Secret [8:22]
8. It's Ok If You Still Hate Jazz [9:20]
9. Bonus: A Taste of The Rabbit Hole [10:12]
10. Traditional Jazz (No Melody) [10:44]
11. Latin Jazz (No Melody) [11:32]
12. Fusion Jazz (No Melody) [12:21]

We would go to music stores while on the road and he would play Spain. He was phenomenal. We miss him so much. RIP my partner, eff fentanyl

My parents were successful song writers and I was exposed to lots of genres from zero. Hated my early piano lessons but left guitar and drifted back to keys after studying both at Berklee during the Stone Age when it was on Newberry and when there were still a few jazz greats teaching there. Most interesting in your notes is that when I was teaching at Third Street Music School I insisted that my students sing what they were playing whether on guitar, keys or bass. Same reasoning…if you can’t, you’re just playing notes for no-reason. For developing solo practice with young kids, I’d play a chord and allow them to choose only one note a measure to sing/play, then two, then lines. And used Bach quartets for sight reading in 4 to 5 guitar ensembles. Hard to fudge it if you aren't playing what's on the page. We had a pioneer in advanced teaching and music ed. on staff who used video recording to allow both student teachers and faculty to critique each other’s teaching. Humbling. Watching myself teach, I found that my ‘brilliant’ elementary percussion teaching was complete garbage and that my drum students had no idea of what I was trying to accomplish. More teachers should have that experience. Learn to get better or stop. My early years in NYC were subject to dinners at clubs where the current artist would either ask my folks to play or my mother to sing with them whether Shearing or Basie. To your subject on this post: found that lots of jazz artists at that time hadn’t learned the basic principles and that, when going to clubs, I‘d tired of endless solos by every member of the group who might or might not be on point that night but it was 'their' eight or sixteen and so it went. I still listen to a broad range of material but endless repetitions of a weak motif to fill in 12 tracks on an album will send me directly to the delete button. Lots of albums should only have been released with a couple of tracks. If you don’t have something to say……don’t. Others may not like what you did but it won’t be pointless. Thanks for opening the subject for those with different listening tastes. More needs to be said about every genre and on music structure in spite of all the KZbin experts teaching how-to-play better. There are a few really well-known presenters who you know that get it but more viewers should be seeing them.

This comment really means a lot to me. You probably know some of my musical influences from back then! And yes, the endless solos; the real book - most music isn't good. I grew up in a musical household too. And I'm just as opinionated as you. Since our opinions align, let's be friends. 😂

The very first day of my first freshman class with John LaPorta he had us do two exercises. “Put down your instruments, get out a blank sheet of paper and notate the Star Spangled Banner.” Mixed results. Then….”write a sixteen measure solo: all quarter notes, all major, no skips over a major third, no skips across the bar-line.:” Endless moaning about ‘no where to go’ or ‘boring’. At the end of the exercise he took out his clarinet and played HIS solo. My guitar teacher was Jack Peterson who was teaching the only degree guitar jazz course at that time. Less than 400 kids in a school that was laser focused on "if you show up for a job against another, possibly better, player but you can also double on keys, arrange and do the session in fewer takes, who do you think will get the job?" Victor Wooten said something in an interview that was not true but very interesting "none of the current superstars came from Berklee". That was never the Berklee goal. It was to make you employable as a musician. @@PayetteForward

A man of many talents David. I have been into jazz since I was around 15 years old and used to have all my buddies hanging it on me for being such a nerd. I'd lay in bed after midnight listening to a jazz program on local radio in stunning mono. First record I ever bought was Dave Brubeck's Take Five. I enjoy most genres of jazz and all have their place depending on the mood I'm in at the time. Nothing better than to just lose yourself in the mood of whatever it is you are listening to. Now past my mid 70's and hearing all types of so called music on fantastic sound systems, it's a joy to be able to listen to and feel the atmosphere created by the jazz musician(s) playing. Thanks for such an enjoyable trip into your world of music and hope to see and hear more of this great stuff.

I like a wide variety of music, except for hard/acid Rock, Rap, Electronic, things on that order can just go away as far as I am concerned. I do like a small amount of jazz, but most of it is stressful to me and thus can just go away as well. I think the jazz I like would be called “smooth jazz” or maybe “relaxed jazz”. I could be wrong, but in my mind I think of it as being the kind that is played softly in a lounge or at a small dinner party where you want it to stay relaxed, where you definitely hear it, but it is just playing in the background and allows for conversation in a relaxed atmosphere.

Brilliant, David! You guys grabbed me with your iPhone tips, & this is like adding paprika to my chicken & noodles! ❤️ I grew up in a rural area, with mostly country music AM stations that went off the air at sunset. In 7th grade, the high school band went a professional symphony concert, where I heard Debussy’s ‘La Mer’ - & my life changed. Freshman year in college I met a guy who played jazz guitar, loved jazz, introduced me to music by Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, & took me to see Miles Davis live in concert. The doors of my mind blew open. Then I saw Jen Luc Ponty. WOW! But I love Broadway music too! AND Lady Gaga (is there NOTHING she can’t do?) I like most genres of music (even opera), & what I don’t, is a matter of what speaks to me. Keep on surprising us! Thanks!

Love it. I love jazz, but I have absolutely no idea how to follow along! Am I just supposed to have the chords memorized, and then recognize the substituted chords as having the same function? Is it just a matter of keeping count with where we should be at this point? I'm absolutely lost, and it's a bit frustrating, because I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable in music theory.
@PayetteForward
@PayetteForward 4 ай бұрын
Just the fact that you know about chord substitutions says a lot. I think it's simpler than that. It's about understanding the song with its original harmony, and then jazz harmony is often a different way to navigate it. The problem is that with great power comes great responsibility. It's easy to create tension, but very few jazz musicians take responsibility for each note and actually resolve them. Jacob Collier does it as well as anyone I've ever heard.

It has a large vocabulary, and if you don't get the chance to be exposed to it at an early age it's becomes difficult to appreciate it. Jazz is about expressing oneself through your instrument of choice, it's not about entrainment in the commercial sense. I could write for hours about this wonderful art form which I live daily. I met a very successful rock musician once who was a bassist and I asked him who his favourite bassists were. I expected them to be other rock bassists but I’d never heard of any of them because they were all jazz musicians. I get the impression that a lot of rock musicians are frustrated jazz artists

Hi, what an interesting vid and you are so talented! A melodica, eh? My first time to be acquainted with this instrument. I may have to buy one, just because it looks and sounds like fun to mess with! I have never cared for jazz because it just sounds like a bunch of random notes. Our office used to party or even go to dinners after work and this is usually the kind of music that was in the background. It was just grating on my nerves until after about four beers, then it started sounding a little better. I never liked it because it wasn't something I could readily hum along with and never seemed to have an actual tune! I have played the guitar and ukulele for years so I have some music knowledge. I have perfect pitch and play by ear, can't read music. To play most rock kind of music, I just listen to it and then play it. I look forward to you making more videos like this. It's always fun to learn new things!

Wrong, we all don't love Super Mario Brothers! I grew up with Jazz, and have a seen in concert, and met many of the Greatest Jazz Musicians ever. One thing you brought up that all great musicians would agree on, is you should be able to sing songs, and that you should also hear the sound you want to create in your head. I blame people hating Jazz and many other genres mostly on the Recording Industry. They have been forcing a lot of garbage on the public for decades now. Rick Beato explains this well with his video "How Corruption and Greed Led to the Downfall of Rock Music" and really most music. A must watch. I mainly like Rock, heavy but not extreme AC/DC are my favorite band a lot of built-up tension waiting for release, I do like Country too and there are not a lot of Country lovers here in England however, my best friend loves it. Trad is or was my fave form of jazz, as The Beatles said ain't got no kick against modern Jazz, I do think after watching this video I may have a look at Jazz fusion. One of my 'out there' tastes is Frank Zappa, who had a musical talent of such breadth and depth, from avant-garde to classical even wrote symphonies! Opera is the one thing I just don't get, though I can pick a few from the three tenors that I do like and some of it really stirs my soul. I like most forms of music apart from that, rap, hip hop, house and some pop music, so long as some talent was used in making it, not just someone with autotune (which has its place, ask Cher) and a computer.

Opera is one of those things you really have to go to see in person to get, preferably at a smaller hall. (Not tiny, but not huge.) The reason is that the human voice does something in person that is just impossible to replicate with speakers - it creates an actual physical sensation inside your ears that's really like nothing else I've experienced. I like AC/DC too! :)

There are A LOT of Jazz styles I don't like. And that's fine. Other people like them. That's fine as well. I may be a person who likes composed music more than improvised most of the time. On the other hand I do improvise/modify songs I know and love. I even found a Jazz niche I definitely like - fusion. That's the thing almost nothing in this world is separated in black and white. Good for us when we accept and differentiate even on small details. Life is so much more than binary decisions and mindsets.

100%. I actually think jazz musicians could and should do more arranging - it's more work, but it opens the door to more interesting possibilities. Check out Jacob Collier, if you haven't.

Jazz hurts my brain, and sends my body into agitation... feels like a pinball game gone awry. I had someone tell me that I just don't understand it 😕 It is what it is...some people dont like songs that I like/love (which hit the right spot)😊 I do love Blues, but not all that have the overtone/undertone ? of jazz.

I feel so terrible about this because you’ve put so much effort into this video, and you’re a great teacher. But even during the Mario bros song, it just devolved into chaos again. I hated it because it was just confusion and I was so lost. At least now I know the mechanics behind why I hate Jazz. You helped me with that.

I think it's just genetic... Like they now have determined that brussel sprouts genetically taste foul to some people (like me) and others love them. I think it's the same way with music. I like HEAVY Classical (Bach, Beethoven, Orff...) or Heavy Metal. And almost NOTHING in between... a little Blues. When Trance was popular, there was some Trance, 404/GOA that I'd listen too. Jazz, nah... annoying, irritating.

I like some jazz, but have found it has become tiresome when the instruments meander self-indulgently, as if begging for applause, like drum solos. Weirdly, in pop, standards, broadway, gospel, etc., I'm annoyed by excessive vibrato, belting, and similar self-indulgent meandering, similarly begging for applause. Many, many moons ago, in high school band when in orchestra I was flute, I was requested to help with jazz band, because "fingering" was the same, even though a different but achievable embouchure. I played(badly) for small concerts and school plays, but well enough with sheet music, but always failed the improvisational diversions when it was my turn. Even when playing in contests for electric organ (Hammond B-3 with a Leslie Speaker) my tunes were "Maple Leaf Rag" and Toccata and Fugue by Bach, and "Music Box Dancer" (I'm that old!) I played well enough, but always failed improvisational portion (thankfully behind closed doors!) So going back to "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Drum Boogie" and into the early 50's I felt the music was expressive and exciting to listen to, inviting me in. But then it became a cult by jazz musicians, for jazz musicians, and if the masses liked it, it wasn't "real jazz". So.. I listen to "ersatz" jazz, denigrated by purists, historians, scholars, and musicians, that forget that for the vast majority of history, music was meant to entice and please the audience, and the musicians were gig workers or employed by patrons. If you're not playing for me, why should I listen to you?! My time, attention, and money in direct purchase of music or performances, or indirectly through subscription or ad-views supporting the playing of music is not a one-way transaction. Self-indulgence is not more "authentic" and "true" than inventive and expressive passages. Don't say you are playing "pure jazz" for yourself, and turn around and expect us to listen and applaud your variations of scales mid-tune. P.S. I think Rite of Spring is thrilling, even at the same time I like the Pastoral Symphony. Excellence in playing, technical brilliance, and emotional responses from the listener are my satisfactions in ALL music. And I find the various Voices of... and *** Got Talents painful to watch and listen when the audiences are duped by cheap tricks and applaud and give standing ovations to those who can't hold a true note, and disguise it with vibrato and scaling and belting long notes. Rant done! How did this happen?!😼

@ramosel

I'll respectfully disagree. I'm an intensely Right Brained person, retired product development engineer. I made a career out of nuance and spotting and correcting audible, visual, visceral nuance. But by the time I get to my music of choice, I don't WANT something I have to comprehend... by choice. I just want it to make my foot tap. I started my working life as a fighter pilot. A very intense environment you have to be immersed in to be any good at. But you have to learn when/how to turn off that comprehension and just be. I don't hate Jazz. I certainly don't have any issue with people who like it. I just don't want to listen too it. For me, it's annoying, irritating. If you were a friend, I'd probably go into a record store and ask for help selecting some good Jazz records for you... or buy you tickets to a Jazz performance... but I wouldn't want to go with you.
@PayetteForward

As a fighter pilot and product development engineer, I would imagine intense focus for short periods of time is a requirement. Jazz is a lot of letting go and allowing yourself to be carried. And if the musicians stink, they can carry you somewhere unpleasant, to say the least. We're friends.
