Why Do People Hate K-Pop?

My friend recommended I listen to some K-pop songs back 4 years ago. At first, I'm not going to lie, I was skeptical. It took multiple weeks of them talking to me and badgering me to finally say "Sure why not". Stray Kids was my first introduction to K-pop, not going to lie. I did not like it at first, but then KZbin recommended an exo song “Monster” and clicked on it because it had a nice purple thumbnail to it. It took that one song to get me hooked on this genre. As time went on I kept listening to more and more groups like Xdinary Heroes, Stray Kids, EXO, Day6, Twice etc. I should mention that I live in Canada so I have a Western point of view of listening to K-pop. As much as I have fun with the music, it is really awkward at school because K-pop is not the epitome of cool, to say the least. It feels like a taboo topic that my friends never bring up like they know I listen to K-pop, but there's like this mutual understanding that we will never mention I like such a thing. I always felt ashamed for being interested in a music genre. This is weird because my love for the music genre was not obsessive, obnoxious or weird yet people made sure I knew their opinion on the genre. While I feel K-pop is getting more and more accepted in my environment I still get the odd look from a person when I say that I enjoy the genre and I still feel ashamed about liking a music genre. And while I try my best to get people to actually listen to the stuff before they bash it doesn't seem to be working out too well. I can't wait for Western culture to be more open to foreign music that is not in English.

I apologize for the long post but I listened to your video and it made me think about my own discovery of kpop. In 2008, I was on KZbin and got a recommendation for "Haru Haru" by BIGBANG. I knew nothing about South Korea or the Korean language, but I had enjoyed Japanese stuff since I had grown up watching anime so I knew I wouldn't mind hearing a new language. I clicked and by the end I was in tears, not just from the MV but also from the song itself. It was painful and somehow my body understood despite the language barrier. A young teenage me was shocked beyond belief and I started checking out more songs by BIGBANG, slowly delving into other artists who were popular at the time - Super Junior, SNSD, 2PM, 2NE1, T-ara, etc. I was hooked and realized there was actually a pretty big fandom for it worldwide considering that social media wasn't that big yet but most of us kept it to ourselves at the time because it wasn't "cool". Being into something Asian - especially being a non-Asian westerner - was seen as being "nerdy" or "a freak" (at least where I grew up) and brought on bullying. I would run home to sing along to BIGBANG songs, watching any clips I could despite barely any translations back then. I watched toaster quality live stages, as well. It seems really stupid, but back then... I desperately needed something to keep me alive and for some odd reason kpop was it. Every day I was breathing because I knew I could turn on a video and forget my reality for a few minutes. 15 years later, I'm a completely different person but I'm still into kpop and have been studying the Korean language for a few years now. Since I basically spent more than half of my life listening to that language, I find it really familiar and beautiful, so I want to be fluent. I'm still a VIP (BIGBANG's fandom) and it's interesting how different the whole scene is from back then. Now people are slowly realizing that "kpop" is an umbrella of many different genres and enjoying it holds no shame. I'm glad you discovered that for yourself thanks to your classmate.

i’ve always been someone open to listening to music in other languages despite not speaking them. but, there is other reasons people hate kpop that I can say from experience bc they’re the reasons I still hate it even tho I like a group and casually listen to others. I learned about kpop in 2015 bc the anime friends I had on suddenly became kpop accounts so I was forced to see the nonstop arguments. it was when I realized how idols have tendencies to be ignorant and instead of allowing people to voice their displeasure, most fans will attack you for calling an idol out. it made me not want to give it a chance. it wasn’t until 2018 that I listened to a song bc my friend wanted me to. I started liking the group but again I was forced to see the amount of “mistakes” idols were allowed to make while constantly being defended. and since kpop fans hate each other, they always point out the offensive things each other’s fav did only to one up the other. this is seen by outsiders, who already know kpop takes a lot of music/dances from western artists, and now they have even more reason to hate the idea of kpop. you see people making money off western music that is (a lot of times stolen) and made into korean then they also are allowed to say/do offensive things without consequences? then you have some of the music is lackluster but will never improve bc fans tend to like anything idols put out. which causes companies to send them overseas to perform on tv hoping they will hit big but they don’t bc no one here likes what they are hearing even if they are open to the language barrier. sorry for the essay it’s just I also dislike kpop as a whole and like I said I have groups I listen to but the industry leaves a lot to be desired

I agree with everything. I’ve been saying for the longest that if u watch anime or kdramas like squid game with subtitles what’s the difference between that and music? As for me I got into kpop in 2012 before I even knew what kpop was. I was watching Dragonball z eps on YT and “Exo K Mama” popped up. I thought it was another anime and clicked lol I listened to them on and off for yrs until 2018 when I saw Bts everywhere lol once I heard mic drop I was hooked and never looked back 😂

You left out one thing: K-Pop borrows heavily from Western music, and from one US subculture in particular without bothering to engage musically with those in it nor acknowledge that influence, and goes further to even mock those same people in their own media in South Korea. I work in South Korea, and I see it often.This you might not know.

Thanks so much for making this video. Honestly, I’ve never been interested in K-pop until recently. Somehow I stumbled upon K-dramas (I already knew of their existence but had never watched any), and as soon as I watched Queen of Tears, I was like, “Where has this been all my life? Wtf is wrong with me that I’ve never taken the time to watch this? This is awesome!” And I’ve been hooked ever since lol. I’m listening to K-pop little by little. A lot of the songs I’ve heard don’t appeal to me, but that’s the same with any kind of music I suppose. I’ve heard some that have blown me away. My current favorites are the mini albums by Bol4 (I think that’s what they’re called), and the albums are Red Diary Pages 1 & 2. The songs are absolutely beautiful and uplifting. Meanwhile, my niece and mother are the only other ones I know who enjoy K-content. My brothers are hella racist and seem to hate Koreans and other Asians and, well, people of any race who aren’t white. I can’t show one of my brothers anything K-related without him making some stupid racist joke and thinking he’s so hilarious for being hateful. I mean, these idols work their a$$es off dancing and singing and performing for so many people. They must be exhausted, yet, like you said, their talent gets written off as unimportant because (one of many reasons, of course) they’re liked by teenage girls. Good ol’ misogyny. Anyways, sorry, that was a rant lol

I was introduced by kpop because of a kpop fan club in school but I was confused on why I was there I could only see BTS which I didn’t knew in the first place But later on I got so into them that I even started naming myself an army and this whole fandom is actually so amazing like not just teenage girls love BTS there is 15 17 20 even 50 females supporting BTS and now there is also males like dads brothers or just guys who truly appreciate BTS for BTS and not for looks ☺️

At this point, most people who hate, not dislike, hate kpop im convinced gotta be racist in some way, combined with insecure. Yeah its weird but the insecurity in haters is very visable as these idols are apparently inferior to all others because they sing in their own language. There are reasons to dislike kpop (minors, saesangs, toxic fans who attack others and themselves). Great video! I could tell you exactly why I don't like it, personally. I took my gf's sister to the biggest BTS fan group in Pittsburgh. She has ASD (autism for some who don't know what ADS is) and she enjoys the same easy beat and easy few American lyrics. What I hated was that it was only girls there, I was the only guy, none of the women or girls (I'm talking 250-300 something women) had all these activities and pictures and crosswords and puzzles to do and raffles. Not 1 of those single people who wanted to go and be there couldn say (or spell) the titles of the albums, the songs, the order of the songs, didn't know the translated lyrics, what the songs meant. All the women there were fake and posers. They like them for their looks and choreography, and every kpop band sounds the same. Not unique to themselves. Maybe 1 song they have will sound different, not a whole album. It feels like reliving Backstreet Boys and the N'Sync, except now no one can sing along because they don't know the lyrics. That's why people hate kpop. If the fans weren't fake and overboard, the backlash from non k-pop listeners (over 3/4 of the US) who don't listen to kpop. That's the issue. Recycled U.S. pop

I may say that I'm a relatively sophisticated music lover but I never hated Kpop. I didn't know it existed so I had no negative stereotypes about it. I stumbled on it by accident in 2017 and it was love at first sight for me. And its not true that during the beginning of the Korean wave people only knew Gangnam Style. That was only the mainstream, but real or more typical Kpop already had a significant number of fans in the west, eg Super Junior held concerts in London and Paris and also appeared in multi-artist shows in the USA. Sadly language DOES make a difference because people do overall prefer music in their own language, occasional one hit wonders like Despacito or Gangnam Style are just exceptions, but thats completely different than consistently listening to artists of a different culture and ones whose language you dont speak at all, whereas many people at least speak English as a second language. So its actually AMAZING how successful Kpop has become in the west - but since recently Kpop companies try to make even more money there with English songs, and this has worked for BTS (regrettably, because it has also involved making their music less interesting and more mainstream, as an NYT podcast recently observed).

I don't mind k-pop. Some song i like, others i don't. English is not my first language either so listening to music in other languages was never a problem for me. The only thing that was always sketchy to me, and still is, it the companies and the k-pop industry that creates these groups and the idols. The harmful diets, the plastic surgery, the "no dating" rule, the pressure these idols are under to be perceived as perfect, and the way the companies markets them as more of a product than an actual person, just the fact that they are called "idols" to begin with... makes me a little hesitant to suport them or consume their music.
