Back in the old days, it was beneficial to make people think you knew an aristocrat or other people of note. What's namedropping today, was likely considered a scam back then. 1945-1950 origin fits well with birth of celebrity culture, when namedropping became just a means of rubbing on some of someones prestige

Hi, Patrick. I'm Spanish native speaker and I can think about a couple of traslations for name-dropping. I think you explained the concept really clear and I've learned a new expression in English which I think is really great. But, why the name-dropping action is called like that? I mean if I would be translating to Spanish that would sound like "I have a name in my hands and I let it go". I just learned English for work, school and because I like learning languages. I'm not a linguistics specialist, but the phrasal verbs in English are crazy and I'm really sure they might have a interesting background. In fact I have nice memories of an English teacher who used to tell me "the history of O.K." ... well, this video made me remember those nice memories :)
@SWLinPHX4 жыл бұрын
English is a fascinating and universal language culled from so many other and older languages (and based much on Greek & Latin). To "drop" can also mean to casually "put something out there" or to "suggest" or "imply" or "insinuate".
@DeRien85 жыл бұрын
Your intro seemed totally casual, not actually annoying

One of my favorite examples in fiction is how it's used in the Star Trek trope "rule of three," where a prominent in-universe character is compared to two other figures, typically one from our past and one from our present. There was an example a couple years ago, when they mentioned that a character in the show was compared to "the Wright Brothers (historical figure), Elon Musk (contemporary figure), and Zefram Cochrane (Star Trek character)." There's a variation of this in an episode of The Next Generation, where the character Data plays poker with simulations of Hawking, Einstein, and Newton. Of course, Hawking was alive at that point, and even played himself in the scene.

Actually, I would think Caesar would be the one name dropping Cicero, seeing how Cicero was only ever on decent terms with the guy, and Cicero was Consul before Caesar, not to mention he was also given "Final Act" powers to deal with threat to the Senate, and was even called "Father of the Country." Ambitious Caesar had just gotten made Pontifex Maximus during Cicero's year, and would only be Praetor next year.

Hey, there is a new aspect (kinda), when on a matrimonial website, a friend chatted with someone for the first time (from another city) and that man kept on mentioning how the Police high official and bid restaurant chain owners and other CIA or so officials in her city were close pals of this person. It was almost always someone in law enforcing agencies and powerful people which have nothing to do with 'his' field of work. It felt very odd and kinda threatening to her. This is an Associated-Power concept and subtle dont-mess-with-me mechanism. Why is that?
