I can't speak for every gore artist, but for me personally its just fun or a way to cope/vent. usually though I add proper warnings and tags on certain socials where its possible. At least on Twitter, what I've seen more of is that the character is an actual comfort character, and the "gore" is so abstract & inoffensive that it can hardly come across as gore. So the whole quote comes off as either a sarcastic joke or someone being way too serious over something like Spongebob cut into little cubes (in the actual show) or Ted with some stuffing coming out.

I've seen someone online who posts about Bruce from Finding Nemo being their comfort character and honestly it's kind of really sweet. I think any character can be someone's comfort character; you're not meant to take after your comfort characters or share their ideals, they just make you happy in some way. Maybe Homelander reminds this person of someone close, like a family member or best friend, who did horrible horrible things, yet they still wish that things could have gone right with them. It's very common for people who grew up with narcissistic/abusive parents to wish things could have gone well and to give the bad people in their life too many chances out of hope that they might improve somehow.

Everytime I play through the game, I have to kill him in the first mission, and hearing him tell me to stop when I stab him is super sad. Honestly this, if i hate something, i wouldn't want to spent time working on a project with that thing in it, only psychopath does that. I have to say i never liked or understood the idea of having a "comfort character." But then i opened up to my psychologist, that I have been daydreaming for years and that I both use it as a tool to write my own story and have it as a bad habit. The thing is, I have a goal to transform this story into a passion project one day, so I dont see it as just OC, but rather as characters in my story. So, to anyone wondering how a character as evil as Homelander can provide comfort, it isn't so much that his actions provide comfort so much as it's about being so fascinated by the way a character is designed/written, it provides joy. It's like how you can enjoy the way a villain is written without condoning their actions, but on a more personal level. There was this comic I saw, I didn’t finish reading it because it made me so sick, it was where Moxxie got an anvil dropped on his head and Millie fell into a deep depression while trying to take care of moxxie, and it was some of the nastiest shit I’ve ever seen, I wanted to vomit and cry. as someone who has Mickey Mouse as a comfort character it's hell you get people repeating the same jokes about him being a corporate overlord, very bad attempts at horror (like the public domain stuff or even something older like the original Suicide Mouse), unfunny parodies that really feel like they came from the mid-2010s, and the actual character not being used in anything substantial besides merchandise and preschool shows (the Rudish era is finished) hate it here

I'm sorry about that :( unfortunately, that's how it's been in the mlp fandom since bronies picked it up. I remember being 10 or something, and going on Google to look at pictures of Pinkie Pie and then getting my first exposure to p#rn and g#re fanart. That experience is a big reason why I plan on limiting my future kids' usage of the internet(if possible in the future) because I don't want them to lose their innocence so early on like I did.

I feel like everyone has a comfort character nowadays. And there’s nothing wrong with that-or new. Especially responses to when something bad happens to them. Sherlock Holmes was so beloved that when he was killed off in 1893, he had full blown obituaries published in newspapers. An early “oh, that’s gore of my comfort character” example if I’ve ever seen it. Even earlier, in what is believed to be the first novel/series of novels in history, Lady Murasaki who wrote The Tale of Genji saw people from 11th century Japan perform funeral rites when she wrote Genji off to continue the story from one of his sons perspectives. There’s even a classic Japanese play about the author and character meeting before ascending to the afterlife together, it’s super interesting.

Not to be confused with, "Oh. I just made gore of my comfort character." Which can describe a writer realizing how fucked up something they put their comfort character in is. In cases of having a problematic comfort character, it's not uncommon for writers who are aware of the nature of the character to have that character receive some form of comeuppance. However, the result usually involves the writer reading it back and realizing just how messed up the comeuppance is, regardless of how deserved it is. Resulting in the writer feeling torn by the whole thing. And then that's not touching the grimmer and darker side of things, where bad things happen for the sake of making your comfort character an outlet for real life struggles. With roughly the same results.

The comments below this video speaking about seeing gore art about their favorite characters while searching for images online really says a lot. (Same with R34 and NSFW) The obsession of fandoms within franchises... The "balance" of how fandoms of certain franchises "reverse" the theme, tone, and mood of their favorite franchise within fanart, fan media, etc... (I.E: Doom & Warhammer have wholesome fandoms while Sonic & Mario have very dark ones, but it's still a big mix overall.) The "joke" of turning something kid-friendly and cutesy into something violent and gory.... The thoughts, desires, fetishes, and parodies, intermixing...
