Yes!! One of my main gripes with pop is that only ONE song off an artist’s album will usually get any play time on the radio. And then there’s these GORGEOUS other songs on the album that casual listeners of an artist never get to hear!!

The artists aren't usually the problem. It tends to be that the radio stations just don't showcase the more interesting stuff, so you end up with what we have now. In order to find good music you really have to find it yourself, even if that only takes going as far as looking at artists / albums rather than the select tracks given to you. That said, I still think there's a precedent set by radio pop that encourages a less enjoyable style (for me). I'm sure there are people who like it but when that's basically all you hear when you turn on a radio like that, it's real easy to just turn it off.

From what i understand, radio stations play what music studios give em. They have basically no say at all, that's why most stations dont have that many songs on rotation at any given time. If you've ever listened to the radio for more than a few hours at a time, you'll notice they just play the same 12 or so songs on repeat, because that's all the studios give em, and that's all they have the means to pay the rights to.

It's so weird though because at the same time who's listening? I don't know anyone who listens to the radio anymore, so why do they keep playing the same 10 songs over and over if no ones interested? You think that'd be enough for them to switch it up. If the radio was actually good for finding new music I'd listen, but it's just a bunch of old tik tok songs. At that point tik tok is a better place for discovery so why not just go there?

If it's a commercial radio station (and though the percentage may vary country to country - most of them are), they play what keeps people from tuning out. Which is to say, easily digestible stuff - because most people who listen to the radio are not actively listening, but primarily doing something else. Public radio might be able to take chances (if it fits in the format allotted to them by whatever federal telecommunications commission), but in that case people can just tune out and still not hear new stuff.

@@rfldss89 I think you're thinking of record labels - I run a studio. Which just means I make recordings, and afterward hand those over to the relevant parties (artist/label). Commercial radio stations can play whatever they want, but will play what keeps people from tuning out (bc they sell ads and they're a business). That can make the music very samey, they wait until a song's a proven hit before they run with it. Public radio can take more of a chance on the stuff they program (since the budget doesn't directly come from ad sales), as long as it fits within the format usually allotted to them by higher powers. Doesn't mean the public won't just tune out though. Also, radio does NOT buy the rights to individual songs. They broadcast songs for free and for every song they play a portion of revenue (ads) is funneled to the relevant rights organization (who then pays the authors royalties) - the amount is usually tied to the amount of listeners the station has at that very hour. If you mean that major labels essentially strong-arm radio stations into playing their music, I'm not gonna tell you that it doesn't happen bc I'm sure it does; although from my experience it's more of an old-boys-club thing, they just discuss whatever's the new thing over lunch and do eachother favors. The 'regular' way of getting a song on the radio is to hire a radio promotor; who has pre-existing familiarity with the station managers/DJs etc, can spin a nice story on the song to get them excited, and keep pushing until they check it out.

​@@Thesierrashow while radio's relevance to the pop sphere is absolutely dwindling, with almost zero new young listeners coming in (the avg audience age is climbing rapidly), it's still a more proven method to be able to break an artist (even if there are diminishing returns). Hoping you go viral online is just not a viable business strategy, for anyone. The internet moves SO fast that nothing's ever a hype for more than 2 weeks; on top of that it's ridiculously fragmented. Radio moves way slower (so once you're on, you don't fall off instantly), which makes it actually viable to build on previous successes and build a career. Internet's faster, bigger, more current; but through all that even more of a lottery, which does NOT work if people's livelihoods (be they artist, label etc.) depend on steady commercial success.

It still is but it does seem like artists are taking more risks, and the music industry has gotten somewhat out of their own .. buttocks. @@grantmalone I think to some degree pop will always be at bare minimum somewhat self referential, but the difference with Adele or Billie eillish or silk sonic is that the influences are a bit out of the bog standard and are also much more significant. Pop is once again just becoming the term for music that is popular instead of the typical 4 chord song with some sort of catchy hook, and that makes me excited. Considering that music genres in general have loosened in definition in the past decade or so it will be interesting to see where it leads. So many incredible up and coming artists that have developed solid followings, whether it’s Jacob collier and his incredible compositions, jordan rakei with his electronic infused sound, Tom misch with his John Mayer influenced funk soul mixture, jakub zytecki and his unique guitar tone paired with some great non diatonic work, plini with his surprisingly melodic and complex progressive metal, Cory wong and for that matter vulfpeck as well becoming borderline mainstream, Tennyson with high effort production techno jazz, Anatole muster making accordion jazz a thing, eriksson kaner with some great jazz infused compositions, Michael mayo changing the vocal jazz landscape, James Francies with his incredible polyrhythm work, Lizzy mcalpine stretching the definition of the typical singer songwriter, quickly, quickly making very nice electronic music after a start in lo-fi, the olllam making Irish fusion a thing, Alfa mist with his hip hop infused jazz work, and so many others young and old that have really changed the landscape in ways we did not expect. Collier started with a KZbin video for example, and Tom misch started posting beats on SoundCloud when he was in high school. The way to success is now very open and the expansion of the studio to just your own bedroom will be wonderful for the world of music for decades to come.

Between Adele, Billie Eilish, Silk Sonic, Olivia Rodrigo and several others pop music seems to be getting interesting again. There's more attention on composition. For a while, composition had become an afterthought to production. Like you mentioned, melodies had become just one or two notes. Chord progressions were almost non-existent. And you certainly weren't hearing key changes. As much as the pandemic has sucked, I think it's made people want their entertainment to have more substance.

If you’re understanding the words enough to say she’s not pronouncing them correctly, then the diction is fine and there isn’t an issue. Changing the way you pronounce something is a stylistic choice that is fine as long as it’s still understandable, which it still is. Celine Dion does that quite often. Very clear diction but she pronounces words differently for stylistic reasons.

Since your react video of Adele's Easy On Me, I've gone back and been listening to all her music since her 19 album, and the growth is incredible! it fills me with pure and utter joy seeing people totally geek out over music like how you do I think its really special when you get to see someone express that its like theres this aura of all these glowing colors that surround them when they just get into the music and then they yell their "OO!"'s and "RRRAH YES"'s I can see the satisfaction and pure love for the music just overflow out of you, and it sparks this inspiration and sense of magic in me keep geekin out man, i absolutely adore it :D💚🎶

I'm just in awe of how much about music I haven't seen yet, like... I never knew this is how much music can really amount to!! I've only ever played around with sounds and made them work, not even studying music properly...! Once I get the time, I will get a piano, and start studying music properly... I had gotten so used to modern pop music that when I initially heard this I was like "what?". but after listening to it a few more times I really just couldn't help but feel that nostalgic old Disney opening esc feeling. it also feels a bit like a few songs from Steven universe. like escapism. just beautiful

Always love hearing your take on songs. I loved her album, I love the progression of each song, takes us on a journey of break up to loving again. It starts off slow and sad then the final song is gorgeous and triumphant. It is like a Disney movie. And Adele got Spotify to take off the shuffle option on her album as its meant to be played consecutively.

It feels like Easy On Me was a hit because it most well fit the preconceptions the average listener has of Adele, when the whole album is a milestone in her career marking how much she has evolved.

Yeah. I'm also one of those who don't care too much about Adele because of those modern "non melodies" noodeling around a very few notes. I'm SO looking forward to listeng to this whole song now. I absolutely love that kind of style with smart chord progressions and beautiful expressive melodies! I might become an Adele fan after all! EDIT: I listened through the whole album yesterday. None of the other songs will be close to becoming a like favourite "Strangers by Nature", but it's a really good album, and none of the songs made me consider turning it off. That actually says a lot, as I'm the kind of guy who like my silence.

I love this! I’m definitely going to listen to this song in full now because of this video. This song actually reminds me of the old classics we sing in my ladies’ barbershop choir. Those jazzy chords.. kind of reminds me of old musicals like King and I, or like you said old Disney movies. I gotta say I never expected music to go *back* in this direction-I thought it would wholly just get weirder and more abstract and futuristic, but I guess after being trapped inside with the internet and no contact, people are really wanting.. natural, tangible, real, rich, interesting, retro.
