Nature, is arguably a very dangerous place. When you choose to embark on heading out for a hike, even on a nice day, you just cannot assume, you are assuredly coming back. Every once in a while, a person will head out on a routine hike, never to return. But what makes Yosemite so dangerous? Lets discuss that in this episode.
Thank you for watching Roanoke Tales and I hope you enjoy WHY Do So Many People Go MISSING In Yosemite National Park?

Never go hiking solo without a SPOT or some other "send the cavalry" device, or even flare/signal smoke. Wilderness is vast, finding an injured hiker is like a needle in a haystack; the elements will absolutely be your grave if scavengers or predators don't first.

I live in Fresno and the most recent boggling missing person was during the pandemic, was Sandra Johnsen Hughes, she was seen several times near Bass Lake and that's close to Yosemite. The California mountains are not to be taken lightly, go prepared for anything, bring alot of water, and bear mase. I have ventured into the back areas off trails where some old gold mines are and you can walk past an object like a body or remains and not even notice it, in fact one thing I think searchers should do is attach a go pro wide angle to their back as they search so they can review the footage later and go back if needed. Our Eyes can only see 200 degree angle wide and 135 vertical and technically we only focus on what stands out. I have walked back on the same trail coming back and would always wonder why I did not notice something I did then on the way up. Drone's are another good tool too if the trees are not overly thick. All of those peoples remains are there, but less likely to be found as we are told for our own protection to stay on trail so no one unless they go off trail will ever discover anything. Spooky up there! Hike Safe!

If you want to go solo then I cannot stress enough spend the money on a locator beacon. Also make sure your phone is at 100% before heading out & that your location is on that's two separate ways to find you. If you have a smart watch with fall detection that can send an emergency text to someone that's just another redundancy. Get a good hand radio tuned to emergency frequency (27.065MHz or channel 9) as you're unlikely to get phone signals out there. Baofeng is pretty much the industry standard & go out with a full charge those things last for days on standby.

@@Luminousreign ^this, not only are large animals extremely important to the ecosystem, but sprays and deterrents can genuinely just work better. These people were hiking alone. Never hike alone in such a remote place, if something goes wrong you're away from help, no phone signal and likely unable to call for help. In the spirit of "stay strapped in case of bears," I'd like to offer a bit of perspective: My family are all hunters. Archery and force multiplier depending on the season. We aren't in an area that gets grizzlies except very rarely. Most of what we see, if we see bears at all, are black bears. Less aggressive, not super likely to attack. HOWEVER. In archery season, everyone still carries something large caliber JUST IN CASE. Please understand: These people who are skilled in forest navigation and safety, are going out to hunt animals in areas that don't have grizzlies, and have the local knowledge to generally avoid where bears have been seen, still take force multipliers for their own safety. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE DANGER OF BEARS. Thank you.

Black bears are actually more aggressive than grizzlies, which are generally skittish and avoid humans at all cost. Black bears have been known to stalk and attach individuals far into times of bountiful natural resources, so they aren't starving...just aggressive. The Black bear is the only North American bear that experts advise to fight with fists, pans, knives, large sticks, anything you can find. You can drive them away with a show of determined will to fight, unlike with the grizzly, where playing dead is your only real option for survival.

When you started giving advice, you took the word out of my mouth. Stay Strapped with at least a dependable 357 or 45. But always stay equipped if you go alone. Great video. Got three things wrong though. 1. There are no more Grizzly Bears in Yosemite as of 1920. 2. Bearspray isn't allowed in Yosemite. I know some people still bring it illegally but technically against the rules. 3. Reservations are required under certain circumstances(no lodging reservation/certain times a year/certain times of day, etc...) Not the biggest deal, just couldn't help but point out in case anyone was curious. 😅

Humble words from a witch. When entering the woods, remember where you are. This is not your home. This is not a place for you to exhibit conquest. The woods belong to nature. And nature belongs to the things beyond our comprehension. The woods are not your playground. Respect the woods while you are in them. If it is a coincidence that the bad weather in after people start searching for them, not only is that an awful lot of coincidence. But it almost seems like a pattern of repetition. if somebody goes missing in the woods and it warrants a search. It is wise to understand that the person you are searching for no longer belongs to you. They belong to the woods. Remember that the woods takes things for compensation when it feels disrespected. To wrap this up I reiterate, respect the woods while you are visiting. They are not home. They are not a place to exhibit conquest over. The woods do not belong to you. The woods Belong to nature, and nature belongs to things outside of our comprehension. Respect the woods while you visit and enjoy your stay.

Yosemite only has black bears, not brown bears/grizzlies. You do not need a firearm there. Honestly, you don't even need bear mace. Be loud while you hike, don't leave food sitting out, dispose of smelly objects in bear proof containers / boxes. I've been hiking in Yosemite 12 different times and covered many, many miles. I've had numerous bear encounters. They usually just want what they are smelling. "If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, lie down. If it's white, good night."

Theres something taking these people in yosemite. Something we dont know. Theres alot of weird shit there. I love it there though. Ive done alot of camping and hiking there. You just dont go off by yourself. There was a guy hiking with a group but got far ahead of them, he sat down by a tree and in the distant saw a thing that looked like an person but wasnt looking at him and smiling at him. It was a dogman or coyote man but had human face features. It looked really old he said. He saw it in the middle of the day and it scared him.

In reference to 23:02 Bear spray is prohibited in Yosemite according to the national park service website so you are advocating for people to break the rules here. As for the firearms, California has some pretty restrictive rules about what/where/how you can carry and I think the national parks also have their own rules so it would be advisable for people to read up on all the regulations/laws before showing up to Yosemite with a .357 firearm. California grizzlies have been extinct for a long time so that particular animal is no longer of concern, but there is potentially dangerous wildlife and humans and it seems that the authorities aren't too keen on people having weapons to defend themselves within the park and advocate other methods for staying safe. Some people would rather feel protected, even if that means breaking the rules, and will bring prohibited self-defense items anyway. It's a controversial issue.

Thank you for covering Yosemite! I grew up with the mysteries and legends about the park. Two of the most important lessons that were drilled into my head, by adults, about Yosemite National Park and pretty much all of the Sierra Nevada are 1) to never, ever go hiking or camping in these places, and their associated forests, without a buddy and 2) to always inform friends and family when I went on outings, even half-day visits. I took what I learned from those lessons, and many more, with me to other places outside of California, and I am certain that I would have been unalived, decades ago, if I had ignored what more experienced outdoors-people had taught me.

Like most here I’m compelled by missing persons wilderness cases. But when we consider the many ways that a fall victim can disappear, literally disappear, the combination of a common slip n fall, followed by a tumble down terrain then winding up in a river, irrigation ditch, irrigation chanel, snow chanel, tree well, under a snow bridge, under a root ball, under a boulder, under a subsurface root ball behind white water, or less commonly in a lava tube or carried away by a subterranean river/moulin system, many “disappearances” lose all supernatural supposition. Weather also plays a huge role. Just yesterday I went to the Dungeness River in Washington and there were tree falls everywhere that weren’t there last summer. If water can move a thousand pound tree think what it can do to a 125-175 pound person. I’m not discrediting the possibility of supernatural forces. Just suggesting that we easily forget the dozens of ways that one bad foot placement can lead to a body decomposing in a nook that SAR could practically step over and miss.

I recently had a few inexperienced friends try backpacking in the Smokies, they had no idea how to layer their clothes, were out of shape, wanted to bringing an axe and other gadgets including a gun for bear protection "bECause CAmpIng". I am glad they gave up and chose a shorter loop near their home as they didn't last a day backpacking over flat ground when they tried. TL;DR, a lot of people who don't know what they are doing underestimate the wilderness, and pay the price.

Solo hiking always adds a level of risk. Even on a day hike it is good to have emergency supplies. Even something as easy to carry as a mylar blanket that fits in a pocket could save a life. And bears are good at eating darn near every part of a human. Good luck even finding bones after the scavengers are done. Calcium is a valuable mineral in nature, so everything from deer to mice will nibble after the carnivores are done snacking.
