I actually think this idea has some merit. Being in the business of others is the bedrock of community. If you aren’t concerned with what others around you do it ceases to be a community. Obviously with communism that’s a different story.

True charity is about giving yourself to others, as the early Christian church did among themselves and in their communities. It’s a full way to live, pouring into one another’s lives. But it’s different giving of yourself, vs. relinquishing of yourself under compulsion.

Specifically, taking from people richer than themselves. IMO, this is probably why the majority of socialists are fulltime activists, only barely holding part time jobs. They become Freeriders, because they don't want to be the ones getting their ownerships taken by the Freeriders. Some of them might be honest enough to state this outright, but all of them instinctively understands this even if they're dumb. Y'know socialism is a great way to setup institutionalized poverty. All of socialism's principles glorifies poverty and pushes society towards it.

Hegel believed specifically that ideas were in a triad of idealism/ideology (the dialectic), thesis, antithesis and synthesis. The idea is placed against its opposite, and then is synthesized into a new idea, this is the basis for the idea of "revolution" in Marxism. How Marxism used the dialectic was to take the status quo, to put it up against its opposite, and synthesize a new status quo. This is the idea of the revolution, to put the capitalist idea/status quo in opposition to socialisms ideas/status quo, and create communism.

On a sidenote: I think people rightfully connect a negative undertone to charity, for the simple reason that today charity has become a money laundering institution for many people. Charity is supposed to be a fundamentally altruistic, or at least economically altruistic act. It's a sacrifice. If you give to charity, but it goes back in your pocket, and you avoid taxes, that's not altruism. However, this says less about the institution of charity, and more about its corruption by modern society.

I love how destiny basically explains the "Teaching a man to fish will fed him forever" to this guy and he immediately admits is not about make sure that poor has sustainable food but about giving them food and keeping them poor. At the end of the day this proves that socialist never wanted to help others, at least not out of their own heart but only cause doing so would mean they are morally superior, they care about the power it gives them against the poor and average/rich person and only cause reaffirming we are all connected makes them entitled to make all the demands they want to. That's why you wont find a socialist who actually does want to abolish classes or make sure workers are better, they need the oppressed to keep being an oppressed so they can keep exploiting them. So, to put it simply for explaining to someone: You just finished working today. You made your boss proud and got a nice bonus. When you come home, you see your neighbour to the right and to the left moping around because they got laid off. The man on the right is a friend and you know his wife and kids. The man on the left is single, and a major D-Bag who yells at the other man's kids for playing outside. Charity is seeing the man on the right, taking pity, and helping them pay the bills so their kids don't have to go hungry. Solidarity is where someone at a desk you never met looks at a report that the man on the left is jobless, see that you, their neighbour, have a bonus you "don't need", and take it out of your account to put in your neighbours'. If I missed something, do tell me.

That being said the majority of the bomus should go to your friend. Because he has a wife and children. More people are depending on him. There are two reasons for that. 1: Socialists hate private charity but love to take credit for it when it benefits the community. It's a common Socialist PR tactic. Jesus being a religious icon of charity is important to them because they view him as the potentially perfect icon of "solidarity". Fidel Castro called himself "Christian" until his rise to power was complete, then turned his back on it and banned Christian charities because they were competition for the Communist government. 2: Jesus is one of the most important religious figures in the Western World. Trying to portray him as a Socialist is very beneficial for their political agenda. It also makes them look "tolerant" to include him in their propaganda repertoire but will gladly discard him and his image if Communism does officially rise because his scriptural nature will always be considered "reactionary". I'm pointing this out because I made that misconception and mistake myself. Jesus wasn't a Socialist. He didn't demand that the government do charity work (not that I know of anyway) and gave to the poor based on what he had on hand.

Good original comment and discussion. I can see how someone would think that if they had read some of Jesus’ teachings and picked up on the collectivist culture he was part of. Jesus’ disciples wanted Him to lead a revolution against Rome. But the revolution he led was much bigger. He had to submit in order to overthrow the ruling powers. His followers submitted similarly, sharing their resources in what probably looked rather Socialist. But as y’all indicated, this was originally in spite of the state, not through it.

Before watching the video, I'm going to make the rather benign prediction that Socialists are against charity as a consequence of their revolutionary inclinations. Charity within a capitalist system runs counter to the Socialist revolutionary objective, propping up the system rather than tearing it down, because when the financial issues of the poor are alleviated through charity, revolutionary sentiment finds less purchase to take root. Of course, Socialists will never admit that the logical extension of this means they have a vested interest in deteriorating the living conditions of society at large and the poor in particular, all the while pretending that their sole objective is to alleviate the suffering of the downtrodden and the oppressed.

My theory is basically that socialists (Marxists at least) believe that if you have enough spare cash to be giving it out charitably, then you must have not actually earned that money. It's like a feedback loop of socialists assuming everyone is selfish while at the same time preaching that humanity is inherently not selfish and it only became that way due to capitalism. They also generally believe that the people in the best position to give charitably - the wealthy - will only ever give it to other wealthy elites, and maybe their own family and close friends. This tends to be true, unfortunately, but it does not poison the entire concept of charity.

Heh, Dickens tossing shade at Attlee in AChristmas Carol, before the guy was even born. I was just reminded of how Scrooge proclaims that he is under no obligation to give to charity because he pays his taxes, and is portrayed as a heartless monster for having that opinion. Also! I know I gas on about Chinese philosophy a lot, sorry! BUT, Confucious was a big proponent of charity (to the point where most community services at the local level were not state funded, but privately funded by local landlords who were expected (but not required) to use some of their wealth for the good of the community), while also being of the opinion that it is not only natural but morally good to look after your own friends and family first. The legalists were bigger on the welfare state (as far as that label can be applied to a feudal society), reasoning that only the state (guided by strict rule of law) should be the instrument that dealt out both reward and punishment. Mozi (everyone's favorite proto-commie) leaned more toward the solidarity side (but never went full Marx. You never go full Marx) with his idea of "inclusive love" (the idea that everyone should care for everyone else regardles of their relation to you, i.e, you should love a total stranger as much as your own mother for example). I can understand and even agree that some societal changes -- political, economical and/or social changes -- may be necessary to improve the conditions and lives of some groups of people, but I absolutely do not understand how you can ignore charity in the meantime. And I am firmly of the position that there can be no utopian society -- (at least not in this life(time) -- and so there will always be disadvantaged people in society no matter how good of a system you may have in place. And because there will always be disadvantaged people, charity is necessary to help these people. Governments simply cannot help everyone -- and even will not, or should not help everyone -- and so we need individual charity to reach those people the government cannot.

The idea of socialized, collectivized, tokenless transaction and the nonexistence of privacy because of it, is a ridiculous idea, and the demonization of a simple moral of aid for the poor, soup for the hungry, shows you exactly where socialists and communists stand, and why I won't associate with them. The coin is the representation of the value of the worker's labor, and it's destruction does not usher in equality or prosperity, it is merely a way to institute the communist's pseudo-theocratic justification for slavery by any other name, just as these reds do not truly seek to destroy an upper class, they merely kill off the old to replace it with their own power, and in their hearts they know this, even if their mouth speaks lies. The lives of the rich do not have to end or be brought down to the mud to improve the lives of the poor, the idea that it does is fallacy. It is entirely possible to raise the floor for the average man without lowering the ceiling in the process. It has happened before and it may happen again, for even if we do not realize, we live better than archaic nobles. Charity has a sense of discretion and exclusivity that government programs do not. Because of the personal nature of charity, those being charitable can choose who specifically they are funding, and how much they are giving. This is a much better way of ensuring that the people who actually need help get it in the form that they need than pooling money from taxpayers to be given back out in the form of checks to people who, very often now, don't need any form of support. Charity is the answer to ending strife; welfare is the answer to continuing and, possibly, expanding it.

Isnt solidarity literally what they normally make fun of religious people for. The whole thoughts and prayers nonsense. The onky difference is that Christians normally actually turn those thoughts into actions through Charity

re: 13:19 *Dev understated this point:* _"It could be done as a way to bolster the person's standing, sure, but there's still a moral component deep underneath that."_ The only way that charitable giving bolsters a person's standing is if the society, *at large,* values charitable giving. Charity could be done amorally, simply to boost public standing. The giver might not think charity is a moral good, may even think it a moral wrong, but if it raises their public esteem it is because *most people* believe it to be a moral good. If society was truly as oppressive and mysogynistic as some feminists believe it to be, then a man smacking his wife on a public street would be applauded, as he is doing a moral good. Instead we see people looking down upon that man, hopefully even calling the police and/or personally intervening, because we value nonviolence more than we value keeping women in their place. (I would argue much more.) Charity only bolsters standing because it is seen as morally good. Whether the giver personally holds that moral or not. When charity starts being looked down upon, when giving lowers a person/organizations social esteem, we know the socialists (or someone else) are winning.

If every economic exchange ties everyone together thus economic decisions cannot be separated from the individual, this is also true for the individuals economic practices. For Communists to not be hypocritical in this premises they must be telling what they're buying to everyone and why. The collective has a right to know you're not being wasteful, after all.

I suspect I can answer this before watching the video (which I still intend to do afterward because I like listening to Dev philosophize even in instances in which we disagree). The answer is that Charity bypasses the State. Individuals, usually the well to do, provide direct support to those less fortunate. Not only does this diminish the importance of the state by giving the poor another (competing) avenue of support, they would also view it as being anti-revolutionary because it addresses the symptoms they complain about with their prescribed treatments. Those helped by charity are thus less likely to seek socialist reforms as a way out of whatever situation they were in that they took charity in the first place. It supplants their God, the state, and suppresses their revolution.

sounds like the Islamic 'zakat', where they claim it is charity, but it's actually a required % (pretty much a tax)

The funny thing about the Christian Socialist position is that it's honestly a historical and detached from the historical reality of how the Church operated and often does to this very day with those who hold the small o orthodox position where it has been a voluntary act without involving the State. It has its scriptural origins with the Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes found in the Gospels but also how it was practiced by the early Church where they did not discriminate based on religion but on need. I'm not going to shill Distributism here but, y'all should look it up.

I hate the "Jesus was a socialist" argument leftists always make, like no shit, he could just zap wine and fish into existence, it's easy to be a socialist when you can circumvent that whole pesky scarcity issue.

They believe the early church was a socialist paradise. But really they hate rich people and excellent people more than they want to actually help.

To be fair, someone with genuine Christian sensibilities could very plausibly look at the government's income, and start thinking that a good use for it would be to do public works and welfare programs. It's not that big a stretch.

@@hoi-polloi1863 Actually there is a Singaporean approach which is more Paternalistic. But it is on a case by case basis. People are held accountable for the help they are given. And there are those cut off who don't comply with the requirements to get them off their feet. Its lack of accountability that results in all the problems of welfare.

The welfare state has become a convenient excuse for people to not give to charity or pay attention to where their money goes. you wouldn't need a welfare state if your society was charitable enough, private citizens could give money and time to competing charities where the competition would make it more efficient and accountable to government bureaucracy. but instead, people chose to make the government their charity of choice so they could abdicate their own responsibility to help their fellow man.
