Why do some maps show Crimea as part of Russia while others show it as part of Ukraine?

There are basically two types of maps: De jure maps, which are based on legal definitions, show Crimea as part of Ukraine because that is its recognized status under international law. De facto maps, on the other hand, depict the actual situation on the ground. In this case, Russia controls Crimea.

There's a very simple answer for that, Taiwan is the original Government of mainland China before the communists forcefully tookover the territory by force. That puts Taiwan to fall back into Taiwan (the Island) and continue the government while Crimea is mainly consist of Ukrainian but were stolen by Russia.

Coming from Poland I have the impression that Google maps has a special border line design for “disputed” that they put, for example between crimea and the rest of Ukraine. So they indicate there’s something fishy going on but they don’t show it as an actual part of Russia. Also, when you click on the name of a country on Google maps it should highlight its borders in red, but this does not actually work for any country that has border disputes. So if you click on Poland you’ll get our shape in red, but if you click on Russia or Ukraine their borders won’t be highlighted to further avoid taking sides in the conflict

Such attitude would open a path towards reshaping world's borders. Serbia and China doesnt recognize Crimea as part of Russia. They both view it as part of Ukraine. I'm not naive tho. I understand post conflict Crimea and atleast most of Donbad will be part of Russia post peace deal. I just dont know if it will be worth it to Russia because American troops will now be stationed in a DMZ between Russia and Ukraine post conflict. As a American that's the last thing I want. Unfortunately the Budapest agreement has been broken by Russia by violating Ukrainian land. We can argue if Donbas and Crimea were justified given the heavy pro Russian sentiment but invading Ukraine from Belerus in clear pro Ukrainian oblasts is a crime without debate. I personally support only the separatists on the basis of self determination.

Kosovo is a hard country to legally pin. Through de jure, some countries say it's independent, while others say it's part of Serbia (Depending on where you live). Through de facto, it's independent. Serbia doesn't physically control the region, as well as Kosovo declaring independence in 2008. But regardless of your interpretation, it's just a mess in general.
