An interesting thing about the word "commonwealth" is that it was originally a rough English translation of the Latin word for republic "res pubica", literally meaning "public thing". So commonwealth and republic used to be synonyms, hence the historical use of the word to refer to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Oliver Cromwell's Commonwealth of England.

Actually the official name “Commonwealth of Dominica” was chosen specifically to avoid as much confusion with the Dominican Republic as possible, I mean they weren't going to change their toponym so they needed to do something else once they became independent and a republic. It might be a nice connection to the Commonwealth of Nations which Dominica forms a part of, but the word “commonwealth” is a literal translation of the Latin _res publica_ (public thing or affair) which is where the word “republic” comes from. Although it seems to have gained the meaning of “a territory with representative democracy”, because the word today forms part of the official name of places that have either a Republican form of government or Constitutional Monarchical government. For example: *Countries* Commonwealth of Australia Commonwealth of the Bahamas *Subdivisions/territories* Commonwealth of Kentucky Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Commonwealth of Virginia *Historically* Commonwealth of England Commonwealth of the Philippines Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

As a Dominican, the original name of the Dominican part of the island of Santo Domingo was in fact Haiti Español or Spanish Haiti, this is what is known as the Independencia boba Dominicana, or the Silly independence, called that because it only lasted a couple of weeks until Dominicans of the time started fighting to annex the country back to a European power, they had meetings with France, the Dutch, Spain, Portugal, and The United States where the senate voted on annexing the Spanish part of the island as a State where they would relocate their freed slaves, however the bill didn't pass by one single vote @@kingofkings2858 So if you are really Dominican you better know your own damn history and educate yourself. GREAT video man. But to add, I am Dominican (DR) and I’ve read that the actual reason for the Name Republica Dominicana is because a group of Dominican Priests were left in charge of the island and the natives while the Spanish colonizers would go away, thus the island beginning to be called that (perhaps as a nickname or point of reference to refer to it) and getting its name. And also, the actual name for ppl from DR is Dominicano.. in Spanish, so u can say we actually do have different denonyms. But for a person whos probably completely foreign to the region u did a great job 👍🏽.

You mentioned Antilles & I couldn’t help but think of Wedge Antilles of Corallia (a variation of Corellia from “Star Wars”, but implying that its a deep space equivalent of Coral Reefs & such).

British Commonwealth of Nations vs Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Why are they both called a "Commonwealth"?
@MatthewTheWanderer
@MatthewTheWanderer 5 жыл бұрын
Same with Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (plus the Northern Mariana Islands), Commonwealth of Massachusetts (plus, KY, PA, and VA), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (aska the CIS, or the former Soviet Union).

@@modmaker7617 It doesn't really mean a specific thing. It's just a thing you can call a political entity. There just happens to be a thing called "The Commonwealth" which is mostly made up of countries formerly in the British Empire. The video is making a bit of a false link between Dominica being a Commonwealth and it also being a member of *the* Commonwealth.

@@Psyk60 Well the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth can also be called "The Commonwealth" for short.

@@modmaker7617 Yeah, the full name of the Commonwealth I'm talking about is actually "The Commonwealth of Nations". I call it "The Commonwealth" for short, but I live in the UK where that's not ambiguous.

One of the most accepted theory of the Saint Domingo Name is that "Domingo" was the mane of Christobal and Bartholome Colon father. Santo Domingo city wasn't discovered on Sunday, brighter on Saint Domingue day (Julian calendar). Nicolas de Ovando (who move the Saint Domingo City to the West Side of the River) name "Saint Nicolas de Bari" the first hospital in the "New World". But he also use the saint name as pretext to to name it after himself. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5rNnYCag9SKoqs

With all these nations that have similar names, has there have been a war over it? Two nations warring over the matter of "you have my name," would be interesting to talk about. I'd like it.

It's interesting because I'm guessing in America if someone says they are Dominican most people will assume they are from the Dominican Republic. However, in the UK there's hardly anyone from the Dominican Republic but there is a small community of people from Dominica. So if you were in England and said you were Dominican people would most likely think you were from Dominica.
