Why does this ant have such a large rear end / abdomen? In this video, I explain the answer. This is a honeypot ant. Select members of honeypot ant colonies, called repletes, live their lives as giant storage tanks. They hold onto to a mass amount of food, in their abdomens, which other worker ants can access in times when food is scare.

Ant communication has been extensively studied and it’s actually super cool the way pheromones interact with ants that cause them to do super smart behaviors. The ants individually aren’t actually that smart, but just the mechanisms of how pheromones are laid out allow them to achieve incredibly smart goals as a unit An example is job organization. Some ants forage, others guard, others clean, and others tend to the brood. They all emit pheromones telling each other what job they are doing. If an ant is going by and realizes that it hasn’t met that many foraging ants, it becomes a forager to fill that gap because it assumes there aren’t enough foragers currently.

These ants are actually really delicious! Here in Australia, whenever I spent time with my indigenous relatives as a kid, one of my great aunts would dig up some of these ants as a treat for my cousins and I to eat. They taste kind of like honey honestly. My great aunt would dig up enough for us to eat but not enough to destroy the ant colony. This is something my people have been doing for thousands of years. I’m very grateful that I was taught how to do this so that it can be passed on to future generations 😊

@@ominous27I’m a member of the Wiradjuri tribe in Australia. When I was a kid and spending time with my cousins, my great aunt would often dig up some of these ants as a treat for us to eat! She taught us how to do it from a fairly young age. We do it in a way where we dig up enough to eat, but not so much as to destroy the ant colony. We have a number of ant colonies that we take ants from occasionally before letting them naturally repair the nest and recoup their population. It’s a part of our culture that has been passed down through many, many generations.
