The daddy issues trope is kinda played out. Her mom is a *whole* alcoholic who lives vicariously through her daughters and nobody really talks about it. 😂

@Kiera Anderson not to mention her mom has sexualized her since PUBERTY. her mom in s1 drilled it into her mind that she’s beautiful and then you immediately see a montage of the grown men in her family hugging her too tight with their hands too low on her back. her “daddy issues” of course add to how she feels about needing to keep men in her life but you really see her mom solidifying that belief by always saying the only thing she has going for her is her beauty and in cassie’s mind, her beauty is her body.

Honestly yes! It’s how i relate to Cassie. My mom is more rues mom but also is kinda toxic too like my mom doesn’t drink but she’s a workaholic and religions n can never admit when she’s wrong. That’s why Cassie idealizes her dad bc while her mom stayed she always romanticizes her dad bc she doesn’t know him

I felt so bad for this character in season 1, and was genuinely happy for her in the finale, when she decides to stop dating toxic boys and focus on herself and being single for a while, but then season 2, which is meant to take place like, a week after season 1, ruins ALL of that by having her literally break her promise to herself and get into a relationship with the MOST toxic boy ever.

I took it as her not processing and making connections to her trauma. The play showed 3 characters in different stages of trauma. Lexi who has processed her in healthy ways. Rue who knows her trauma but masks her feelings with drugs preventing her from facing her emotions and Cassie who is just flat out denying the trauma.

I completely disagree that he doesn't want us to feel for her. My feelings towards Cassie throughout this season were mainly heartache and frustration, not hatred...its people who are not emotionally mature enough (whether because they are young and just haven't had the time yet to reach a certain level of maturity in general because thats how growth works, no judgement its just part of growing up...or because they never are exposed to or choose to do the work to broaden their perspectives and understanding of emotions/psychology/healing) that see her through solely a lens of hatred and judgement. It is so frustrating to me to see how so many people aren't able to grasp that her character is so human and that the choices she makes are so completely understandable (NOT condoning them or saying she should just be forgiven and face no consequences) and what she needs is therapy. Poor girl has trauma and she is not actually actively aware of how that is impacting the choices she is making. She's a child. She can't be held to the same standard as a fully grown adult. This is not a simple situation but the lack of compassion or empathy is truly scary. As for Nate, I feel the same about him. The level of trauma he has from finding his dad's videos at such a young age...bruh like I can't emphasize enough how deeply formative something like that is on a person. He also needs therapy. They all do lol. There's room to both condemn a person's choices/actions AND hold space for empathy and understanding. Why does no one seem to be able to see things through a deeply nuanced lens...

It totally felt weird to me how they deal with the consequences of actions in this show. When you stop to think who is worse between Cassie and Nate, Nate takes the cake by far. Yet he barely ever suffers from any consequences. On the other hand, we have Cassie, who is constantly being punished for every choice she makes. She sends a nude, it's then leaked to the entire school; she does molly, you get the carousel scene; she cheats on McKay, Daniel humiliates her; she sleeps with her boyfriend, she gets pregnant; she betrays her best friend, she gets beaten up etc. Yet when is Nate being punished for his evil doings? Twice. Once, he's beaten up and the second time, humiliated in a school play. That's it. The weirdest thing of all was that everyone was praying for Cassie's downfall and wanted Maddy to beat her up, and almost everyone was satisfied when it happened, but what about Nate?

It was actually shown a lot how Cassie feels extreme guilt about going behind Maddy's back with Nate but her desire for male attention was stronger. The scene where she pukes in the hot tub & starts crying about how sorry she is to Maddy and how she "ruined everything" to me came off like she was actually talking about her being with Nate and her guilty conscience spilling out in her intoxicated state but of course everyone there thinks she means the tub because that's the obvious situation.

I did feel sorry for her after that AWFUL play Lexi performed in front of the whole school. Really made me question if/why Sam was pushing this "Cassie is the bad guy" angle. It's like a darker version of a Disney channel movie where the one-note mean girl "gets her comeuppance" instead of, like you said, a complicated person struggling with abandonment.

Honestly I think it makes sense. A lot of times when people feel like they’ve been wronged and they have their chance at a comeuppance they take things too far. They get so tired of exercising restraint only for it to blow up in their face that they take things to the extreme assuming that whatever they do will already be justified by what others have done to them.

I don’t know what’s happening considering Rue talked about staying clean to the end of the year which is a major time skip. I think next season Rue and Lexi for how they handled things should apologize to Cassie and Cassie should apologize to Lexi for how she acted. All the characters are both victims and spreaders of pain and they should make it clear that Lexi isn’t a hero, even if we’re happy about some of what she did.
@ohnowendigos8804
@ohnowendigos8804 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Michael. The carousel scene went way too far. It's a very...Riverdale moment, you know what I mean? Like I REALLY have to suspend my belief that the school faculty gave a pass to this sexually explicit, scandalous play that's a very thinly disguised commentary of real students (and that the high school drama department has that high of a budget 😛) Remember how brutally realistic the show was when it came to Rue's addiction? What happened? Khadijah, I wish the next episodes had played out like that. You're right that Lexi has always felt like the unfavorite compared to her sister, even though she's not a "bad girl" like Cassie. When you put it like that, I can see why she'd lash out. I also agree that it would make more sense for Lexi to apologize - or at least have a twinge of regret? Or get suspended, at least? Or even Cassie having a moment of remorse instead of stomping onstage and explicitly calling herself the bad guy. I just really feel like Sam is trying to make us hate Cassie and it's weird, especially for a show that was touted for having complex characters.

Honestly, though I loved Lexis' play in terms of creativity. I understand Cassie's anger and humiliation. Cause Cassie really does have a super valid point, it is awful how Lexi is "airdrying her trauma to the whole school."

It was ridiculous they just left the abortion out the show. We could have done with a meltdown over what happened to her especially on top of the nate situation she got herself into. I feel like if Sam wanted to push Cassie’s daddy issues and need for male validation she could have been with Daniel again the guy from S1 who she cheated on McKay with. To me it would have done the same things and wouldn’t seem wildly out of character. Cassie could have still been spiraling and going through it without ruining her only friendship. Plus Cassie going for Nate felt like every other teen drama show you know. Like we see best friends boyfriend all the time particularly in female friendships.

I think they wanted a huge betrayal in the show. I mean, a lot of the show’s most entertaining aspects revolves around the relationship drama (the “oh shit” moment when Rue tells everyone about Cassie and Nate booking up, Lexi’s hilarious play, the parallels between Nate + Cassie and Nate + Maddie). It made for a better story overall, even if it doesn’t portray female friendship well. The show would’ve been ten times less interesting if they did what you suggested (no offense). At the end of the day, it’s a show (basically a teen soap opera) and it’s meant for entertainment.

Cassie’s abortion could’ve offered way more development but instead they acted like it never happened and that just makes me so upset because not only is abortion stigmatized but talking about the effects of a young woman getting an abortion is extremely important and could’ve perfectly tied in with their mental health themes.

We are told Cassie is supposed to fight back against Nate. Stand up to him in the name of love for her best friend Maddy. But let’s be REAL here people. Nate is a psychopath. He manipulates and intimidates and when that doesn’t work he is literally violent. How could Cassie have stood up and said no to Nate? Realistically, ask yourself that question. What would you have done in Cassie’s shoes? The entire TOWN is afraid of Nate, especially since it’s basically known he hurt Maddy. The police are kinda scared of him. His own dad is scared of him… what was Cassie supposed to do? Say no and get r*p*d instead? In some ways what Cassie did was a defense mechanism because she was so used to men just taking what they wanted from her, it’s easier to just give in sometimes than fight and get hurt. That is how SA and DV often happens. But people want to say Cassie should have told a monster no and somehow live to tell the tale. She is just as much of a victim of Nate as Maddy was. There even is a scene where she tries to stand up to Nate and say what they are doing is wrong, but Nate continues to blame her for what they did and says there is no going back now. She challenges him and he literally freaks out at her, and she walks away but he calls her back and only when she is threatening leaving does he say, “No baby wait, I love you.” That is super abusive behavior!!! Cassie is a domestic violence victim of Nate Jacobs. She just doesn’t have the external bruises to prove it. All Cassie’s wounds at the hands of men in her life are internal. But they’re there.

I think it's not really because of the abortion. Its shown how she prioritise the feelings of her deadbeat dad for his sparse visits over her own safety (like the drunk driving scene), as a parallel to when Nate was doing the same. I mean sure you can summarise this as "daddy issues" but really it's a little bit lacking in nuance. It's shown over and over about her mother's plight, and how she grew up with that being her idea of love. It's heavily implied that she's attracted to men who don't treat her right. The thing what i would change in this is that all the dreams of having a child etc should be attributed to Cassie instead of Nate.

I don't think Sam simply wants people to see Cassie as a villain, but maybe he wants to show reality, like how people with mental health problems like Cassie don't get any sympathy even if they are manic waking up at 4am, crying all the time and throwing up from drinking too much, even her family has no sympathy for her, see her wanting to die and don't get her help and I guess this is just the reality unfortunately? It's fucked up he doesn't put in more flashbacks for her tho, idk I hope this season was supposed to be an auto critic of the audience and the next season it explicitly shows how deep her problems really are

“What was the reason for it??” Because Nate was the one person who was nice to her in one of her darkest moments. Nobody else gives Cassie love or care, or if they do, she just can’t see it. But she noticed when Nate took notice of her, and that was like a hit of a drug to her. She instantly got hooked by Nate in that moment. She became addicted to him then and there. I wanna know why everyone is acting like Lexi's play makes her a brilliant writer? All she did was tell everyone else's stories, air out their dirty secrets, etc. without their permission and then paint it in a way that she's the victim in all of it and also bragging about how she's better than them all for how she's different (for lack of a better term, being a "pick me") That carousel scene was out of line, but honestly the whole thing was. If she thought Cassie needed to be taken down a peg maybe stage an intervention (no pun intended) instead of a production in front of all her peers.

cassie acts like this because of everyone knowing of her f*cking with nate, her best friend’s ex. and the guilt she feels from it. the “one scene” you’re looking for to explain her behavior is her imaginary screaming scene in the bathroom, and when she throws up in the pool yelling “i’m sorry maddie”multiple times. she wasn’t just apologizing for throwing up, she was apologizing for hooking up with nate. even the scene where she yells at her mom. when cassie said “everyone makes me out to be the bad guy but i’m not the bad guy.” and lexi says “well you’re not the good guy.” and her mom says “well that’s for sure.” and she’s probably also hurt because she feels that people view her as someone without self respect. as she interpreted her moms words that way and lexi said “you fell in love with a guy who’s made fun of you for years. it’s sad.”

I think Cassie was treated unjustly because that’s honestly life. People don’t care what you’ve been through, your trauma, your hurt or why you’re acting the way you’re acting, they just care about themselves. I think Cassie is just learning that and a part of her became a little bit hardened and felt like now it’s her turn. Now it’s her turn to get what she wants and not apologize for it, regardless of who it hurts because it’s been done to her and nobody said sorry to her. And honestly that is a real life. Life is not fair. People change, and do things they never thought they’d do ESPECIALLY high school kids. They’re just learning, mistakes are a part of that.

Ive had a few friends similar to cassie. They want to be loved so badly that they cant see their friends love them, so they end up not caring about hurting them as long as theyre getting the male validation they so desperately crave since that's their only measure of being loved. Idk Cassie was hard to watch. I kind of just wanted her off my screen. Tbh I don’t think they wanted to show abortions in a bad light. I think the media has a tendency to present it as a good thing. And while that maybe true for many woman it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any affects. I just remember shows like Degrassi showing it as it happened and a character was better for it and that was the end of it. I find it interesting so many people have sympathy for Rue but very little for Cassie. Did she deserve a butt whooping? Heck, yes. But in no way is what she has done worse than Rue but people don’t extend the same considerations for Cassie. I think its because people actually relate more to Cassie’s storyline than Rue’s. Not many of is has had a parent whose died but many of is have been a Cassie who degrades ourselves to try and get someone’s attention. That’s why subconsciously I think people hate her so much. They hate that they have done that to themselves in real life. I know I did that when I was younger. I think Cassie’s storyline could have been a lot stronger. I really disliked how slapstick comedy it go at the end.

Great first video dude, and I completely agree. It feels like Sam bit off more than he could chew juggling character arcs this season (and also I’m hoping the rumors about him shafting Barbie because of personal disagreements aren’t true, otherwise it may have been intentional). I really felt a lot of S2 was “drama for drama’s sake” with the exception of Lexi, Fez and Rue. I can see why he would want to leave some things on the table for S3, but he’d have to know not to be so reckless with the gaps between those seasons’ releases. I honestly still liked S2 for the most part, I just think it lacked the focus of S1 and hopefully Sam works to communicate and take ideas from the actors in S3.

My thing is I really liked Cassie season 1 and Maddy noooot the most. Then that switched around as we got to know Maddy better, and lost who I thought Cassie was. When McKay first tells the guys he’s dating Cassie, they’re like “oh she’s this and that, have you seen her videos?” I thought Cassie was just confident like that, but we later find out she didn’t even want those videos released. That added so much dimension, and now she’s like “I’m the villain and Nate and Maddy were broken up for 3 weeks and 3 days blah blah” flat.

Abortion should not be a justification for her issues. That is a slippy slope. Abortion is not a be-all and end-all. It was good that the director didn't make it the main focus. It happened that is all. What was her issue was the fact that her dad abandoned her at a core part of her life.

In season 1 I didn't like maddy even though she was my fav character. She was as toxic as nate and also didn't tell Jules about the tape. Until we saw that he started physically abusing her. Then this season we get to see her learning and maturing. But also we see her almost making the bad decision of getting back with nate. If it weren't for the Cassie drama, that probably would have happened. Season 1 made me sympathize for maddy but season 2 made me like her. With Cassie it was the opposite. The only thing I can never agree with on those critiques is saying that what Cassie did this season was “out of character”, because it’s really not. Cassie was ALWAYS someone who put men and male validation over her relationships, and even over everything else. It was only a matter of time before this would ruin a non-romantic relationship.

A really nice analysis! Continue like that - I like this format and always love to watch good analysis/opinion vids on series (especially the ones I like). I agree with some parts but I also think (or like to think) this all was done on purpose that no reason is mentioned. For me it makes sense - to some degree - that she behaves the way she does after everything that happened to her last season (aside the abortion). It really brought her down. Many occasions where she felt powerless. She was also always less powerless than Maddie. But now suddenly she got her bf - some kind of power Maddie got. To me Cassie never seemed very vulnerable in front of her friends, only maybe in front of her sister and mom. Like she never opens up about how she really feels. She doesn't communicate it. And maybe that is her path. That she has to learn to open up - maybe only after realizing she behave the way she does because of her daddy issues and other occasions in her past. In the end of s1 and in ep1 of s2 she only says she has to be alone for a while and be with herself. That's good, because we can all agree she would really need that. But remember that there are only a few weeks or months in between. You don't change suddenly. Change takes time. Being vulnerable takes time. Especially if you really have to change some aspects how you think and are that were you before, how you functioned before. It is easier to spiral. It is easier that things happen to you. And to me that seems the case for Cassie. Things happen to her and she adapts. She has to learn to take action - but only after realizing she wants and has to change for herself.

To add on to the abortion story, it's even worse that Sam almost entirely abandoned the story and swept over it for this season when Cassie didn't even want to have the abortion in the first place. While she had the talk with McKay she said she wanted it and you could see how much pain she was in knowing McKay didn't want it and persuading her to have the abortion, it wasn't really a two sided decision, it was more of McKay's choice. So the fact that she wanted the baby but didn't have it just to please her man would definitely more than likely affect her. It would be different if she didn't want the baby at all but she did. And they could've done a great story with it on how she can overcome what she's going through or at least something, but they didn't.

Tbh a lot of people hate on Cassie as if she’s a really bad person without thinking of why she hit on Nate in the first place. I see myself in Cassie a lot and tbh I get hurt when others are bashing her without even thinking about her though process throughout the season. she’s programmed to want attention, she’s been groomed essentially to want male validation. Personally, I was in the exact same situation. Even though I knew something was wrong, getting that little moment of validation from a guy I didn’t even like that much over weighed the consequences. I ended up getting taken advantage of by so many guys, and I felt like I needed to do anything to get the attention again. Cassie is hyper sexual, as a lot of girls in this situation could become. When she feels sad, she does irrational things. When she was at the gas station, she was under stress and super emotional, and she tried to find attention to make herself feel better, even from her bff’s abusive ex. She would have done the same if it was a random boy. It just so happened that Nate agreed to hook up with her, which started the whole cycle of abuse on Cassie like how it is with Maddy. I’m not proud of what I did, I cheated, became a home wrecker (not actual families but like, boyfriends), and I was probably the shittiest girl I knew at the time. I’m so much better now, but nobody really understands what I was going through and automatically assumes I’m wanting this attention, I’m fully stable when I’m doing these horrible things and that I’m a terrible person. Before I became like this, nobody would have thought that, and after, nobody would think that of me because this was a side to me I was ashamed of, but I couldn’t stop. I hope this helps someone whose in the same situation, went through the same situation.

I'm going to give my two cents about Cassie. I believe the abortion effect was reference when she was in the pool scene and she threw up after Maddie said that Nate wanted to have her babies, she seem to have realized how serious Nate talked about the relationship to Maddy vs how he did to Cassie and what McKay was willing to do. I for one also believe that the complexity of Cassie's character remains throughout the second season due to the fact that you can physically see visuals that point to her having this anxiety and inner conflict with the persona Nate has made her become. She tried to convince herself and people around her that what she did wasn't that bad, but it was. I also observed how people miss the point of euphoria, since it is not to depict real life accurately but to display real issues that may happen. Cassie like any teenager made choices rooted in her patterns and trauma. Cassie only blew up on the stage when Nate left her meaning that she was not upset at Lexi for embarrassing her on the play but because Nate responded in that way, Cassie decided instead of blaming herself for being with Nate or blaming Nate for doing what he did, she blames Lexi for it. When she gets beat by Maddy you can see her persona made by Nate break down, the complexity is there, under the dewey foundation and covered up guilt and anxiety. Also, It all reminded me of how in the bdsm community something explored is the ability to give another person control over you as a form of relief for your traumas. Cassie surrendered to Nate because she didn't need to face anything on her own if he took control and made her the persona he wanted her to be.

Honestly it felt like maybe Cassie was thrown in as a space holder for the Jules/Nate drama. Jules did literally nothing of substance this season and her relationship to Nate was a HUGE part of season 1. They kinda imply that Nate is still interested in Jules because he thinks about her during his “dream sequence” with Cassie, plus there’s the scene where Nate gives her the tape, but that’s about it. I believe Jules was close to being over Nate/Tyler (especially since she started dating Rue) but it seems so odd to me that they would just throw Cassie in as Nate’s main love interest when he clearly had unresolved issues with both Jules and Maddy that they hardly address in season 2. I get that Cassie needs male attention and her depression from the abortion might cause her to seek it out more, but it just feels out of left field for both her character and Nate’s. Honestly the only character that was handled well this season in my eyes was Rue. Season 2 had me wishing it would just forget the other characters and focus on her because everything else was either paced badly or extremely out of character.

Sometimes trauma can't be processed so while trying to ignore it other issues emerge such as anxiety , depression physical symptoms etc. Cassie can't process her trauma so she ignores it and it is being expressed via her behaviour. It is not mentioned to us because it is ignored by her, she is not thinking of it as the cause of her behaviour so we kind of get in her position, we are faced with an unexplained behaviour caused by unprocessed trauma just like she is. The thing about her father is shown and it is used as justification for her behaviour because it is something she herself acknowledges. The lack of representation reflects her denial. We have no memories of the event because she is suppressing those memories and we have no flashback to conversation about it because maybe she never had one.

Cassie was my favorite character(most compelling IMO) this season because of this plotline. I agree about the abortion thing though. I thought what Cassie did was totally believable. I empathized with her most of the time. My ex-best friend tried to have sex with my now husband back in the 90s. The friendship ended but we were drifting anyway. Now we are friends again as adults. I don't see cassie as a villain, although that was the goal with the writing. I think ppl should cut her some slack. Kids act out. Now if that were to happen to me as an adult it would be a clean-cut and no sympathy. Kids need to be allowed to recover from their screw-ups. There are only a handful of characters from the show that I have a hard time empathizing with (Lori and Cal for example). Also, I hated the play and Cassie's reaction to it. I hated Maddie's reaction too but it was more understandable. Nothing about the play made sense and it was messed up. I actually see Lexi as the one with the shittiest character at this point. I would NOT want her as a friend.

Cassie is still shittier than Lexi. I will admit Lexi went to far though but to say Lexi is shittier is wrong. Worse than being betrayed by a friend for sure. And it wasn’t some small betrayal. So I wouldn’t trust somebody that would do something like that at all. I wouldn’t trust someone like Cassie either. But yeah I quantify what Lexi did as worse. Friendships come and go but family is forever usually. I hope Lexi apologizes. I hope Cassie apologizes too for the fucked up stuff she’s done. The reason I am sticking up for Cassie is because people are qualifying her as the villain and I think that that’s wrong. I think that they all deserve to recover from their mistakes. I already pointed out that the characters that I have a real problem empathizing with our Cal and Lori. And Nate is almost irredeemable as well. Like unless he gets some serious help, makes major changes and takes accountability for his actions, that would be it for him in my book.

I mean if it was some random guy who approached to her she world still fall in love. Also, notice how Cassie is never complaining about her problems to any of her friends, I don't recall that she had ever had any conversation with girls about what was happening to her which was really weird to me bc it's it a big deal to have an abortion but no one to talk about it. I do not agree with what is said in this video. The fact that Cassie has done everything that she did has nothing to do with abortion because in fact there is no evidence that abortion causes any trauma, what causes it are the social repercussions that it entails; Cassie doesn't live in an environment where she gets condemned for something like that, in fact we know that her mom, sister and friends were totally supportive of her. If she was depressed it was because of all the humiliations she went through from the men in her life. It is good that abortion is not referred to, we must not continue to spread this type of stigma, it is true that it is a difficult process and can be painful, however it is not very different from any other medical procedure.

For example, I do want abortion legalized in my country and the fight for it is strong nowadays, 100% pro choice but I hate watching memes painting abortion as a "fun" activity, I find it very insensitive. What I'm trying to say is even though I don't like Sam Levinsons work that much, I'm not assuming he directly wanted to paint Cassie's abortion in a bad light. I disagree with what you said about the abortion. I think it’s kind of unfair to pass cassies actions off as a result of her abortion when literally nothing in the show suggests that. As you said, after her conversation with McKay the show treats the abortion like it never existed, so I don’t think there’s enough information to jump to that conclusion: There’s so much stigma about abortion today that shouldn’t exist in my opinion, while some women can have trauma from that, it’s not always the case. Lots of women are extremely grateful for making that choice, It’s not inherently a bad or traumatic thing and it’s unfair to assume that it was. I think that McKay pressuring her into getting the abortion would have had more of an affect on her than the abortion herself. She should have been able to make the decision on her own, but again that situation is treated as if it never happened in season 2. If anything the show hints that her actions are a result of her craving male validation a lot, so jumping to the conclusion that she’s acting this way because she got an abortion, seems like a really strange reach, as there is nothing in the show to indicate that’s the truth

In order for someone to love you, you have to have found yourself. Be who you are, and love who you are. Someone can't love someone who has no belonging or love within themselves. You can't fall for someone who is empty, someone who has no drive or spirit from their soul. Being with someone who has no identity, who copies what you are known to like, who has no personality or drive within themselves, is hard, and is very sad. When you know someone who has no spirit, it is easy to convince them and manipulate them, which is very destructive and heartless. It dehumanizes that person and minimizes that person to be seen as an object or puppet. Being a person of your own is very important. Self-love is rewarding, it's beautiful, and it can bring the most joy in life itself. People love loving people for who they are, and that is the beauty of it. Cassie needs to go on a self journey and grow as a person, so she can love who she is and her growth as a person. The day she loves herself is the day she will be happy. And we all can't wait to see her and her journey in season 3. All love to Cassie!

I am not a fan of Cassie's S2 arc, however I really do believe people who say "my season 1 Cassie would NEVER!" didn't pay attention in S1, and have let their sympathy cloud the fact that she was extremely messy. Yes she was soft-spoken, generally nice and pretty, but she was always complex and had that tenancy to go for the wrong guys, so no, I don't really think that Cassie sleeping with Nate is completely unbelievable, I do however DESPISE it because Cassie's arc was clearly going in the opposite direction at the end of S1. It would have been refreshing and nice to see her put herself first before her lovers. And those who defend this arc can miss me with that "oh love is Cassie's addiction and she relapsed" nonsense because we didn't even get to see her TRY her new philosophy. She literally just hopped on the next toxic d*ck that came her way. It would have been nice to see a character like Cassie actually prioritize herself for once.

in the first episode of season 2 when cassie breaks up with mckay or doesn’t wanna make up with him (can’t remember exactly) she tells him that she is a terrible person which could be an indicator that she feels this way because of the abortion and could also be a reason for why she would be drawn to nate, another very horrible person.

Am I the only one that still doesn't get it why exactly she is even seen as a villain in the first place? What exactly is so villain that she did? Sleeping with her best friends *ex* boyfriend? Oh come on, people are not entitled over each other's bodies, how exactly is that a bad thing as long as both Nate and her consented? Why should Maddie need to consent first to two people that aren't her having sex with each other? What's the big deal, where is the problem? Like, yes, she kept it secret, because she was aware that Maddie would feel entitled to Nate's body like that, but, like, that's kinda Maddies problem honestly. I really don't get it.

(Long reply lol) Dude, If you think once you break up with someone, your entire history with them, your love and the *INTIMACY* that you once shared just goes away forever, I can ensure you that for most people it doesn't work like that. Even if Nate and Maddy had a casual thing, it would still be inappropriate in my opinion, but Nate and Maddy have gone through so much together, and she clearly loved him (still did to some extent at the beginning of season 2.) Getting angry that your best friend slept with someone you loved is not necessarily a matter of being petty and possessive, it's just *extremely personal.* (This is an exaggerated example, but imagine someone you know, no matter how much you trust them, wearing your clothes, sleeping in your bed and pretending your parents are their parents.) (Also sex is not just about bodies, a lot of feelings and intentions are involved. It's not like Cassie ate Maddy's leftover sandwich.) Nate and Maddy's relationship was also toxic and abusive, and he in her own words "put her through hell" and "fucked her up." How is sleeping with someone who caused you so much pain, not betrayal? It's also noteworthy that the abuse inflicted on Maddy doesn't reduce their intense, complicated relationship to just "hate." Even when she's completely healed and done with Nate, she wouldn't be "indifferent" to what they shared, no matter how painful it was.

Ok, you get a spouse that abuses you verbally and physically and drags you through hell until you’re at a mental low, all of which your closest friend are aware of, and have that same closed friend, fresh out of your break up, sleep with and get with that spouse. Tell me you’re not going to have ANY emotions.

Maybe because Nate abused her and seeing him with her best friend would be very traumatic?

4:52 YESSSS OMG I defend Cassie to the grave just because the self sabotage and destruction is accurate and I agree with Kat that Cassie was always a character that ‘would sleep with your boyfriend’ but they just turn her into a psycho villain without actually tying it back to anything for the audience. Idk how they could’ve done it but at the very least, her mom or sister should’ve tried talking to her about the possibly traumatic experience she just had before this spiral…. Instead of creating a play about how horrible a sister she is while she’s obviously going through something. McKay just disappearing sucked bc I would’ve liked some closure with him, the conversation they have doesn’t give us anything and it would’ve given us the callback to the clinic scene that season 2 needed.

I had a Cassie in my life’s and how exhausting she was- my hate for her character really translates cause I have been hurt like Cassie but had to deal with it like Lexi, I was Maddie taking care of my Cassie at anytime but she sleeps with my boyfriend of 3 years on my birthday but blames him for pursuing her… Cassie always plays the victim when even if she is doesn’t mean she gets a pass to hurt the people that love her

this show’s writing is all over the place. it keeps taking these very interesting, nuanced characters (cassie, jules) and instead of exploring how their identities are shaped and changed by various circumstances, the show takes a single shallow aspect of their characterisation, and overfixates on it to the point of banality. just when you think the show might actually get “deep” and say something profound, it gets turned into a soapy teen melodrama. for instance, it is obvious to everyone and their mother that cassie is not a bad person, just a young girl who struggles with abandoment issues due to her trauma. the show instead decides to focus on the fact that she “betrayed” her best friend (who’s a proper cunt btw) and that she’s two faced. like really? THIS gossip girl pretty little liars vibe is what you decided to go with? this is the only aspect of cassie that they explored in the season, EVEN THOUGH they had groundworks for more. i think the fans are putting far more thought into this series than the writers are

I had an abortion and although it did deeply affect me, it didn’t cause me to spiral out, it’s never just one event happening in life for that to occur, it’s a build up of that trauma

Cassie’s abortion would’ve been a great inclusion this season. Having gone through it myself as a teenager, I know how the procedure can really throw off your hormones & put you in a state of being that isn’t your usual self. I remember living recklessly for like 6-8 months afterward & realizing what a strange hazy fog I was stuck in. It’d be nice to see that aspect portrayed here because it’s such a normal thing but we don’t feel like it is because nobody talks about it.

Honestly even a flashback isn't necessary when it comes to her abortion. Have like a 2 second scene where she gets emotional looking at the children's toys when she hangs out with Maddie at the house Maddie babysits for. Anything showing she's got repressed emotions regarding her abortion.

maybe they didnt reference it, but i believe the abortion is exactly why cassie is spiraling. i think it would have been perfect to reference it in that first episode when Cassie and McKay have their talk in the bedroom and she tells him she doesnt believe shes a good person. but the abortion is what caused her break up with McKay. Nate just so happened to be the guy that stepped in for her and help her feel better and thats the only reason why she betrayed her best friend. Her need for male love is more important than the love she gets from her female best friend. The only time we actually see Cassie happy is her Friday nights with Nate and she absorbed that and mistaken it for real happiness and love rather than something that pushes away the bad feelings.
