I like the basics here and I can aloborate on them some more since i do work with this stuff in a lab. Firstly blood type 0 is called blood type zero because of the zero a and b antigens om the red blood cells. It is true that you usually give rhesus D negative blood to patients who dont have that antigen. However if there is a shortage in for example 0- blood you can switch over to 0+ blood if necessary if the patient is not known to have antibodies against them (you dont make those naturally). We will only do that to male patients since female patients who maybe can get pregnant in the future can have pregnancy problems due to possible antibodies being made. There are also a lot more blood types then 0,a,b like rhesus e,E,c,C and kell for example. It makes blood transfusion sometimes a bit more complicated then what this video explains but in my opinion it makes it very interesting!

during 2:28 there is a mistake u said ( universal plasma donor has type AB positive) u meant to say (the universal plasma recipient has type AB positive) recipient not donor. Great Video anyway
@moonbeam2062
@moonbeam2062 2 жыл бұрын
No, it's correct. He's talking about 'plasma' donations, not the red blood cell donations.. When someone donates blood, the blood banks separate the plasma (the light yellow/clear liquid that contains a blood's antibodies) from the red blood cells (the dark red part which contains the blood's antigens). So, they put the red blood cells in separate packs from the plasma packs because they are used for different things. So, O negative is the universal donor for red blood cell transfusions because it has no antigens on the red blood cell surfaces that the recipient's antibodies will attack. But AB positive is the universal donor for 'plasma' because it has no antibodies in its plasma that will attack the plasma recipient's red blood cells. Red blood cell transfusions are for surgeries, injures etc when someone is losing blood. Plasma transfusions are for burn victims and people in shock. Also, it's used for pharmaceutical medicines for liver and various other disease treatments. Hope that helps. :-)

Just because you are told you need a transfusion doesn’t always mean you need one! I was discharged needing a transfusion, I refused and managed to completely recover without it. My daughter has O blood type and had a difficult pregnancy with the shots.

I was wondering the same thing. The title was a bit misleading as it didn't explain WHY the different types from an evolutionary perspective. Though I did find somewhat of an answer (more like a theory) in another video here starting at 2:58: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipqWeppsl5yHZ8k

Hello, could I use this video for a non profit campaign in Crete Greece organized by the municipality of Chania about blood donation with attribution of the source? The only change that will be applied is that I will translate the words in Greek, because it will be presented to primary school students. Please let me know if you agree with that. Thank you.

Is blood group 'AB' prone to diseases because they don't have antibodies and blood group 'O' also because they don't have antigens

Why O^ve- blood group is known as 'universal donors' ?? Tell me the reason other than -'it can denote blood to all blood types'🤚🏽
@moonbeam2062
@moonbeam2062 2 жыл бұрын
Because O negative doesn't have any antigens on its red blood cells that the other blood types antibodies will attack when it is transfused into another person's blood. (And the blood banks also remove the type O blood's plasma before transfusion so that its antibodies won't attack the recipient's blood either.) So, it's safe!
