First, great job on the Rembrance passages in Big Reds Warhammer IIC video. It's been a great weekend for BT fans. Big Red spent 4+ hours teaching us that the Clans are way more dysfunctional than even the CCF(With some Warhammer IIC lore thrown in). Tex continues to teach us what not to do in BTA 3062 CR reminded us why we hate SRM Carriers. Sven continued his deep dive on the Second Succession War ( Or the Great Houses didn't destroy their Advanced Tech the first time, let's finish the job this time). And now MF gives us the Timber Wolf. I'm running a version in BTA that you would truly love. It's a modified Timber Wolf-S. IS Plasma Rifle; Clan Plasma Cannon; 4 SRM 6's with Inferno and Tandem ammo; 1 ER medium, the JJ's of course, and an ECM. It's perfect for when you want to invite your enemies to a BBQ.

I think a lot of it comes down to a mix of it's aesthetics (the timber wolf has a very recognizeable profile to the point I've even seen people who aren't really battletech fans that can recognize it on sight) and that it's also very customizeable and versatile even in stock configurations. It's also just different enough from a lot of other mechs to have interesting features, like chicken walker style legs, it's feet have wide split "toes" that in some games literally move as part of animations to simulate bracing for fire or getting a better grip on terrain, and more. It's also a very functional look, instead of the oft times more deliberately stylized appearances of a lot of both earlier and later mechs, which actually helps make it stand out more in terms of believabiliity despite the inherently ludicrous premise of the game. Appearance wise, the Timber Wolf is battletech's original guiding design principles itself as an aesthetic in all of it's very 80's, very industrial design sense, and who's can't help but love it for that? It's also faster then many both clan and inner sphere heavies, has respectable armor and a ton of pod space for weapons and equipment, often has great visibility and weapons traverse in videogame adaptations and frequently appears in some of the most beloved works of fiction for the setting. It's to the point that despite knowing there are factions even amongst the clans who can't build them, it just feels weird to not see them on the battlefield, particularly for younger fans who didn't get to play any of the games from before the clans were even part of the lore, much less very actively doing shit in the Inner sphere. They who do not love the timber wolf on some level, even just for what it represents has probably never actually played the game.

Personally, I've pondered how one might overcome the biggest failing the mech, namely its price tag. Best I've got is building downgraded non omni versions of the 3-5 most useful configs. The Timber Wolf B while not the most optimal configuration is interesting for its history in that it follows in the footsteps of its Woodsman B predecessor, which shares striking similarities with the Grizzly. There is some speculation that the Woodsman B was inspired by the Excalibur, which Clan Wolf was known to favor even creating an Early Clan variant of the Excalibur which shows remarkable similarities to the Woodsman B. Also, because the B config isn't as optimized as other configs it is notably cheaper in BV than other Timber Wolf configs, yet you still get a Gauss Rifle, LPL, LRM10, and SRM4, which is similar in capability to IS Mechs like the Cataphract, Caesar, and Falconer.

There may be more than just the ferro fibrous armor on why mechwarriors were confused about the damage it could take. XL engines, EndoSteel, IS grade FF and Double Heat Sinks were relatively uncommon and Clan weapons, especially the missle launchers, weigh less than Inner Sphere counterparts. They probably thought, using the armor/mobility/weapon triangle you quote so much, that all that other stuff had to come from somewhere. Unfortunately for them, they were very wrong as instead of a mech with the armor of a medium, it was closer to that of an assault mech from the Succession Wars.

Coming late to chime in on the rear-facing streak SRM launchers on the D variant. I think they’re more helpful than they may appear because the Timber Wolf -D can flip its arms and fire its ER PPCs (which have no minimum range) into its back arc as well. It’s my understanding that because that variant has no lower-arm actuators it can flip its arms instead of torso twisting. While the Stream SRM-6 launchers might have been better pointing forward I think a possible 24 missile hits in the same arc would have been too min/max for that era. Does considering the arm flipping shenanigans improve your opinion of the rear-facing SRMs?

Its fast, flexible, well armored, packs an ungodly amount of firepower, and runs cool enough to keep firing. An absolute nightmare to deal with if youre on the opposing side during the clan invasion. And even later on the Timberwolf remains relevant and capable. The only minor weakspot it has is that it doesnt field jumpjets. As a mercenary facing one of these is a worst case scenario.. especially if paired with a vat grown clan pilot. On the other hand Clan Tech makes for problematic salvage in universe since its allmost allways ireplacable.. unless you have the bank account to not worry about such things wich seldom is the case for mercenary outfits. So most time its better to sell what you salvage and buy yourselfe a nice Assault mech or two XD The Madcat has been the poster child for battletech and especially for the Mechwarrior series ever since the unseen disaster of yore. And it did an admirable job at standing in for those classic designs. As a Clanner the Timberwolf is never the wrong choice, it can clearly punch above its weight and everything below is prey to it. As a IS pilot.. well.. good luck. Atleast youre going down against a worthy oponent XD

Glad to hear it. You Wolves don't get enough nice things coming your way. I mean, come on CGL. When can the Wolves win something for once?

@@MechanicalFrog Hey man don't even want to hear it. haha I suffered through the BS of the refusal war! And don't even get me started on the plot criticla hit which is ALeric's treatment of the Dragoons. He masterminds an amazing takeover of Terra only to go mustash twirling evil? what??? If anything in that plotline was BS it was Devlin stone giving away the key to fortress republic. I admit THAT seems thin.

Awww! Hoped for the third " brother " the Shadow Hawk😆 But Timby is perfect aswell, gonna paint one tomorrow. Also my config would be Prime but swap out left torso pod for the S Config. So I get 3 x machine guns half circled around the " snout ". Do get 2 xjj. Er Large, Medium lasers stay and 2 x Clrm 15. The mgs are heavy type. So the 3x of them gets 2 tons of ammo. 2 ton lurms fort the 15. Shoved in an Targeting Computer for good measure too.

Secondary mech frog variant; 6 plasma cannons, 7 jump jets, and a small pulse laser. Movement points 1/2/2...

nice to you were able to source models for each variants, not an easier for more obscure mechs

Yeah it's nice that we had the opportunity to show a few of them in their proper look. Maybe some day that could be possible for many mechs.

Quick note; Horse is actually pronounced Hor-hay. It even explicitly mentions it in the book. :) Funny story, I was working in a call centre years later when I had a customer with that name call in. Apparently I was one of the very few who got the pronunciation right without being prompted... so thank you to Battletech for the education! :D

I don't play table top, but ever since Mech Warrior 2 I've been using my own variant of it. Replace the LRM 20's with LRM 15 +ART. Drop the M Guns. Slap some Jump Jets and an Active Probe on it. It is so fun to jump up a mountain or above some cover that you shouldn't be able to get past. While having the heaviest mech in your sights. Loose both pods and down it before they even know they were in a fight.

KZbin! MF did well!👍 Thanks for that great vid. It is truly an iconic mech….but I still don’t have a MadCat😅The big one in the KS will end up being my first. I was glad to see a Sirian Lancers reference in there! I like that unit. And the CSO team’s TimberWolves look AMAZING!🤩

We love it because it is iconic. And it's iconic because the design gave FASA a "hero" mech, that was immune from the Harmony Gold lawsuit. The Clans, of course, remain overpowered Munchkin Poo.

Even in later eras it is still hard to beat it for versatility. Almost all of its configurations are extremely dangerous. The only thing holding it back is the lack of jump jets for most variations.
@MechanicalFrog9 ай бұрын
Yeah for several of the official configurations, it's tempting to rip a few things out to make room for JJ.

@@MechanicalFrogI think you could do so much with dropping those LRM20s and replacing them with LRM15s and twice the ammo.

The Coyotes developed all the crazy technology (other than battle armor) I can't help but wonder if there was a Very Specific Coyote in mind when the writers decided on that. Maybe they established some kind of Academy of Clan Mech Engineering.

I like Prydes Timber Wolf design. JunpJets are just one of those things you like it when you have them. And when you lose them, you miss them. I like the D-Configuration the most next to the Prime, because it's very similar to the Savage Wolf Prime, which I do kinda like. The backwards firing Streaks is really one of those odd dumb ideas. Backwards firing weapons are far too circumstantial to be handy.
@MechanicalFrog8 ай бұрын
Yeah I wouldn't fault anyone who wanted to play the D-Configuration with the Streaks all facing forward.
